Not my thing. I preferred PR. He's to cocky in Cherry Moon. It's annoying. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

oh, in that case, that it was an embarrassing bomb, one that showed prince had let stardom go to his head, the words "narcissistic" and "vain" appeared in most reviews. One review said Prince, in black and white looked like something your biology teacher had you dissect. The press ran it down like it deserved to be rundown and the public stayed away in droves, what more do you need to know? I watched it all go down, down, down.

interesting, i always thought the gay thing was an act, he didn't even do it well. Like a straight man imitating a gay, starting with his sucking his teeth at Dick Clark. He understood, intuitively, that a lot of women love gay men and he played it to the hilt and got much pussy that way.

ya that was good, now threadstarter, i will say my opinion, had prince not rushed it, i think he could have been a very good filmaker, there were glimpses of natural talent but his ego would never have allowed him working with enough people to nurture it, so what we got was a musician who thought he could make movies and instead got his ego squashed to hell. I don't think he'll ever try it again.

Prince, being a closet Elvis fan, imitated Elvis dying in Love me tender, Elvis was just as pathetic but he was hot enough to where his turds didn't get picked apart in the 50's. Prince obviously liked the early elvis movies (amongst many, many vintage films).

general opinion:
Prince did another movie besides Purple Rain?
at the time, it was regarded as a disaster... at least by movie industry standards
but around this place, the general opinion is more generous... mainly because the people here know more about Prince and enjoy him... movie probably wouldn't have worked without him.
occasionally I like it more than Purple Rain because Christopher Tracy is more fun to be around, haha
also... generally... a fun, enjoyable movie...
but one of the worst endings in any film cuz it was just so pointless kinda in the way that the ending of Gone with the Wind made watching it for 4 hours pointless had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I too prefered the broading dark Prince
His PR success + the Morris & Jerome imitation took cocky to another level

ya, i've said that many times, the mysterious Prince (which is really a big part of his personality and appeal) was what drew everyone in, the not giving interviews, the layers of glitz, makeup, florid music made it impossible to see this bizarre little man at the center of it all, he had way more presence that way. I think he was bugged by the "Morris stole Purple Rain" talk.

Wow, do you think Jerome could have been a great comedic actor?? Think about Chris Tucker, Eddie Murphy, etc....Jerome could have went to have great success in the black/urban movie genre. The camera loved him and he has a great sense of comedic timing.

well, he did better than prince. Prince was a horrible actor. tell the truth though, lots of brothers are funny as hell and would make great actors, there's only so much room in the biz for so many people though. [Edited 8/3/12 14:07pm]

"THE general opinion" on the movie "Under The Cherry Moon" is that it is the second worst movie in the history of cinema, after Graffiti Bridge. And that's the general opinion among enthusiastic Prince fans. Beyond that microcosmos, the movie isn't even discussed as a "movie".

I was 16 and a huge fan when I saw it in the theater, and I guess I just enjoyed watching Prince, and my sense was that the crowd, most of them assuredly fans, did as well. I agree with the comments about the scenes with Prince and Jerome. There were some funny moments there. Today I give it a pass because it's Prince, but if it were anyone else I wouldn't waste a second of my time.
Three memories I have of seeing it in the theater: The Wrecka Stow routine got a big laugh. A comment from a black woman about Prince always being with white girls. And the palpable sense of excitement when Girls and Boys came on: Finally, a performance!, which is all we really want to see anyway. Too bad it was so short lived.
Speaking of which, ditch the movie altogether and just watch the Cobo Hall show. That's the Prince from 1986 that I'll remember.

I love this movie...better than Purple Rain. Nothing more sexy than a man whose comfortable in his own skin. Wardrobe sexy...but no one else could wear those clothes and make it work. Eccentric looks good on him. I also love Kristan Scott Thomas' performance. They were so wickedly different that it actually made them sexier together. Didn't care for the ending. Overall good entertainment with some good laughs.

I love it but I'm bias. The general consensus, however, is that it sucked. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Prince doesn't live a gay cultured life
I don't think he is homosexual, we definately would have had some 'accusations' by now lol
but he is definately queer

like i said, most gays think everyone is gay. I lived with a gay guy once, had to kick him out because he kept insisting I was gay, so I was gay enough to put his ass out. It's tiresome. Give it a rest and if I was Dick Clark I would have slapped the shit out of prince for his little gay act, it wasn't even convincing. Americans have a wierd fixation with gayness, truly wierd (not saying your american) they accuse everyone of it as if it's some horrible character flaw and at the same time preach tolerance and acceptance, weird.

I think that is Imago is being ironic when calling P gay. If P was-should it matter? No. And that's the point. Correct me if I'm wrong Imago. And I will out Imago-he is an American. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

it really shouldn't, and gayness is tiresome, I don't care and don't want to see it, hear it, be approached by men (which happens alot to me). People really do have time on their hands, instead of worrying about basic survival, we have the luxury of fixating on some sort of angle and it's a lot more than gays who do it, seems like everyone's got their little niche and axe to grind. You get older, you just don't want to hear any of it anymore. Just do what you're suppossed to do and live your live how you want quit advertising what you think you are. I have to say lots of spoiled bratty people out here.

'UTCM' has always been friggin' hilarious to me [I saw it as a kid, & I wasn't even a Prince fan @ the time. But I still liked it even back then ]. Never got why it was hated so much. I believe Prince did write GB
ROLLING STONE (1990) PRINCE TALKS BY NEAL KARLEN
Originally, Graffiti Bridge was going to be a vehicle for the reborn Time, with Prince staying behind the camera. But Warner Bros. wouldn't go for it, so Prince wrote himself into a new movie. Later, visitors to Paisley Park saw a version of a script that was allegedly obtuse to the point of near gibberish. "That was just a real rough thirty-page treatment I wrote with Kim," Prince says. "Graffiti Bridge is an entirely different movie."
As in Purple Rain, the plot features Prince as a musician named the Kid. Willed half-ownership of a Seven Corners club named Glam Slam, the Kid must share control with Morris Day, once again playing a comic satyr combining Superfly smoothness and Buddy Love sincerity. It's a fight of good versus evil, and band versus band, for the soul of Glam Slam.
Then there's the unknown Ingrid Chavez, Prince's first female movie lead who doesn't look like she was ordered out of a catalog. Throw in the talents of Staples, the reborn Time, George Clinton, and the thirteen-year-old Quincy Jones protégé Tevin Campbell, and you've got, Prince says, "a different kind of movie. It's not violent. Nobody gets laid."
