What do you think of it? I think it desrved a thread of it's own as it could ge over shadowed by the amazing Our Desiny.

The first totally unheard Prince song to come out in a while, probably since Rich Friends.

I like it, it's nothing mind blowing but nice to have, and it's grown after a few listens.

Fits in nicely with other outtakes circa 1989, Good Man , Your Love is So Hard, For Lust.

A track rating for me would be a 7/10.

I like it more than "our destiny", which i've never cared too much for to begin with.

never liked the live version either.

Now "american in paris", this i dig. it's just great to have a totally unheard of song

being released like this, out of the blue.

I've only known about this song for a few months, since reading about it on Pvault

or somewhere else. didn't think i'd ever get to actually hear it.

like the vocal melody and delivery.

Funky bass line gets in your head, nice quirky number sounding how I would expect from 1989.

I gotta say though, when I read RD's post, the first thing that popped in my brain was "would he experiment with his background vocals like the rest of his 88/89 outtakes?", to me that era marked the BEST as fas as his vocal harmonies were concenred. Needless to say, I was kinda disappointed that he didn't, but I still love this oddity.

I love this! I'll definitely be playing it more than Our Destiny, mainly because I'm not really feeling Lisa's vocal.

When I read the song title, I figured it would be a ballad. So it was a pleasant surprise to get this funky, upbeat, summery jam. I love the late 80s sound, the rhythm guitar is wicked, the melody is catchy and fun, the background vocals are typically flawless and almost as good as the lead.

I think the song goes on for slightly too long, though. It could've benefited from a stronger bridge and maybe a few more changes. Or an edit.

I think I prefer this to Our Destiny as well. By the way - why was the Our Destiny thread deleted?

American In Paris is an unreleased track recorded in late 1989 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The track contains (non-lyrical) background vocals by engineers Michael Koppelman and Tom Garneau, marking their first musical performance on a Prince song. The song tells a story of a girl from New York who travels to Paris and meets a man (portrayed by Prince). They have a brief romance, and she then wants it to turn into marriage. He, however, already has a serious relationship, and ends the relationship by taking her to the top of the Eiffel Tower and running away while she has her eyes closed. The track is not known to have been intended for any particular project, and remains unreleased.

The title is likely inspired by the 1951 musical An American In Paris starring Gene Kelly, itself inspired by the 1928 extended symphonic tone poem by the American composer George Gershwin also titled An American In Paris; Prince's song, however, misses the article of the title, instead titled only American In Paris.

Knowing Prince's faux-deep ass, I'd say the movie.

The rhythm guitar is SO Sly Stone (huge influence that Prince doesn't always acknowledge publicly). Very fun to hear the track! Love anything UTCM/France - related.
