"Sound quality analysis" for volume 1:
I guess my conclusion would be: move along, nothing to see here. But I'm the kind of person who prefer a bit of tape hiss than excessive noise reduction.

My idea. Or or were the earlier b00tl3g versions too slow? This version just doesn't sound right. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

It's the best sounding Moonbeam levels and neon telephone I think, Wnedy and Lisa bg vocals sound better on this release to me. However i don't think the difference is major. Nr on moonbeam levels is much less on than on the work.

There is a rehearsal video of which the audio only is circulating (I don't think the video is) from around 1995, a rehearsal of "Pussy Control" and "Letitgo". IIRC some guy, a friend of T, was at PP (for one of those impromptu concerts IIRC) and saw an unguarded video camera. So he pushed the "open" button, and finds a tape. Which he proceeded to sneak out of the building, but security had noticed him. He did get out, but he was declared persona non grata and security was told to look out for him.Something like that; I think T was also involved.
I've tried finding the story on amp but I cannot find it since Google Groups has been redesigned and somehow is shittier than before.
That's AFAIK the only incident of stealing: most outtakes leaked because Prince handed out tapes left and right, including to fuckbuddies girlfriends. © Bart Van Hemelen

Don't forget Prince leaving tape copies of numerous recording sessions at studios all over the globe... And some (ex) bandmembers just selling or giving them to friends...

My objective and subjective impressions of this release as compared to the previously circulating versions (known to me) of the songs in question:
Disc 1We Can Work It Out - Appears identical to the version released on Work It 2.0
Moonbeam Levels - This one is a toss-up. The version on Work It 2.0 is brickwalled with a Dynamic Range (DR) Value of 4, while this release's version has a DR Value of 8. Unfortunately, despite being more dynamic, this version sports many compression and noise reduction artifacts and also occasionally clips, all causing audible distortion from start to finish.
Wonderful Ass - Appears identical to the version released on Box of Chocolates (BOC)
Old Friends 4 Sale #2 - This version is more dynamic (DR Value of 13) as compared to the version on Work It 2.0 (DR Value of 9). No differences noted in clarity or detail.
Manic Monday - Ever so slight and possibly non-existent improvement in clarity and a possible vocal boost, as compared to the Work It 2.0 version.
I Can’t Love U Anymore - Appearing identical to the version released on 30 Years of Unreleased Funk Vol. 1, both versions are clearly superior to the one released on Work It 2.0.
Extra Loveable - Appears identical to the version released recently, audible clipping and all.
I Wonder - This version is inferior, sporting a slightly lower dynamic range (DR Value of 8) compared to the Work It 2.0 version (DR Value of 9) and occasional clipping.
Train - My preference for the versions available is as follows: Work It 2.0 > 30 Years of Unreleased Funk Vol. 1 > Perfect Unreleased Prince. The Work It 2.0 version is not only the most dynamic (DR Value of 10) but the drums seem punchier and more forward in the mix, affording it an atmosphere of an actual train chugging along. I find this enjoyably playful and complimentary to the lyrics. The version on 30 Years of Unreleased Funk Vol. 1 (DR Value of 8), while clearer than the Work It 2.0 version, is less enjoyable due to the recessed drums. The version on Perfect Unreleased Prince is the least dynamic of the three (DR Value of 7) and has a high-pitched and annoying hiss audible throughout.
Lisa - With increased dynamics (DR Value of 10) and improved clarity, as compared to the Work It 2.0 version (DR Value of 8), the Perfect Unreleased Prince version is markedly superior. Around 3:22, take note of the improved detail and clarity of Prince's quasi-scream-grunt.
Nothing Left to Give - A high-end boost results in rare moments of clipping, otherwise, no difference noted between this version and the one found on Work It 2.0
Neon Telephone - Another toss-up. This version is ever so slightly more dynamic (DR Value of 10) and clear as compared to the Work It 2.0 version (DR Value of 9) but has traded an audible hiss for audible noise reduction artifacts.
Love… Thy Will Be Done - Slightly less dynamic (DR Value of 8) as compared to the Work It 2.0 Version (DR Value of 9). No other significant difference noted.
High Fashion / Mutiny - Slightly less dynamic (DR Value of 7) and occasional audible clipping as compared to the Work It 2.0 versions of High Fashion and Mutiny (DR Value of 8). No other significant difference noted.
Empty Room -Appears to be sourced officially released version found on C-Note, albeit with added compression (DR Value of 7 vs. a DR Value of 8)
Chocolate - More dynamic (DR Value of 11) compared to the Work It 2.0 version (DR Value of 9). The vocals are more recessed in the Perfect Unreleased Prince version and there is audible noise reduction artifacts throughout. The Work It 2.0 has an audible hiss throughout.
Wouldn’t You Love to Love Me - Appears identical to the Work It 2.0 version, minus 7 seconds
Open Book - Slightly less dynamic (DR Value of 8) as compared to the Work It 2.0 Version (DR Value of 9). No other significant difference noted.
All My Dreams - Although more dynamic (DR Value of 11) than the version on The Parade Demos (DR Value of 9) and with stereo channels reversed and a seemingly wider sound stage, I find this version to be a step-back in quality. Vocals range from harsh to muddy and seem recessed overall in the mix, subtracting from could have been a minor improvement overall.
Love Is a Losing Game - Appears identical to the version released recently. [Edited 7/29/12 6:25am]

My objective and subjective impressions of this release as compared to the previously circulating versions (known to me) of the songs in question: Disc 2Irresistible Bitch - Markedly inferior to the Work It 2.0 version, with hiss and muddy vocals present throughout.
Baby, You're A Trip - Large improvement in clarity and details as compared to the Work It 2.0 version, with a slight increase in dynamics (DR Value of 10 vs. DR Value of 9)
Lust U Always - This version is less dynamic (DR Value of 9) as compared to the other version released recently (DR Value of 12) but might be a bit more detailed, even after volume matching during AB comparisons. Despite the hiss and slightly softer sound, I prefer the previously released version for the punchier drums and bass notes.
Purple Music - Vastly more dynamic (DR Value of 15) as compared to the version on Work It 2.0 (DR Value of 9). No other differences noted.
Computer Blue - Nearly identical to the version found on 30 Years of Unreleased Funk Vol. 1 with the exception of more audible clipping present on the Perfect Unreleased Prince version
Electric Intercourse - Vastly inferior to the version available on the Playtime bootleg.
Possessed - More dynamic (DR Value of 11) as compared to the version on Work It 2.0 (DR Value of 9). No other significant differences noted.
All Day, All Night - Appears identical to the version released on Box of Chocolates (BOC).
Our Destiny - Negligibly less dynamic (DR Value of 12), as compared to the version released earlier this year (DR Value of 13), with increased clarity due to possible noise reduction, possible EQ and an increase in overall loudness. As a result, I prefer The Perfect Unreleased Prince. version.
Go - Inferior sound quality compared to the 90 second clip previously available.
Baby Go-Go - Increase clarity and detail as compared to the truncated version available on Work It 2.0
Data Bank - Despite sounding identical, interesting enough, this version has a DR Value of 9, while the version on BOC has a DR Value of 8.
Rebirth Of The Flesh - No significant differences noted between this version and the ones available on Work It 2.0 and 30 Years of Unreleased Funk Vol. 2
The Ball - No significant differences noted between this version and the ones available on Work It 2.0
Witness 4 The Prosecution - Vastly inferior to the BOC version and appears identical to the version on Work It 2.0
The Line - To my knowledge, no alternative version is available
Fuchsia Light - To my knowledge, no alternative version is available
The Max - To my knowledge, no alternative version is available
Dance With The Devil - More dynamic (DR Value of 12) and more audible hiss than the version on Work It 2.0 (DR Value of 9). The Perfect Unreleased Prince version also appears to have a slightly narrower stereo image but also sounds clearer.
Come - Seemingly identical to the version released on The Dawn (4.1). [Edited 7/29/12 7:35am]

I'm trying to remember, is Empty Room the track on C-NOTE that was available in 2 different versions? If so, is this the rarer of the 2? My memory is hazy on this. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

No, the live version of Empty Room from the NPGMC was only available as one version. It was one of the instrumental tracks on C-NOTE that had a longer and shorter version.... I think it was Copenhagen, but I might be incorrect. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Ah ok. Just thought it seemed strange that all the material that wasn't previously circulating was on the second disc. |

That's the one I was thinking of. Thanks!
IIRC, the longer version was edited down to the shorter version because it contained elements of another song that was a cover not written by Prince.

Because there are collectors that prefer to keep things to them selves.
They never understood the meaning of 'music' in the first pace, and that is TO SHARE !!!!!!!!!
I know Prince fans on SOULSEEK who have huge collections to browse through, but impossible to download because they don't share. ((
The (Prince) music I have is available to all, why ? It's not mine. It belongs to Prince and everyone who wants to hear it.
I don't buy bootlegs (anymore, since 2003). For the simple reason i don't want to spend money to the ones who are not worth having it. Therefor, i will never dis on the ones who buy bootlegs, cause those are the people who (still) spread the music for instance Etcetera, etceteralalalalaaaa "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And, to go back on topic, I think "Go" gets better with each listen. At first I was really not impressed. But this is a weird little song that only Prince could have recorded. Not his best, but still interesting.

Every time I get banned on Soulseek (despite sharing thousands of records) it's by Prince fans or at least funk fans, and most of them are also French.
Fans of other things just aren't like that, they may ban u if u won't share but never if ur connection is too slow (as if it was ur fault!) or if they don't like what u share.
Being French, I know that French people are asses: it's in our DNA, nothing can be done about it
But what makes French funk fans more unpleasant than, say, French electronica or jazz fans: I couldn't say :-s
As for why rare outtakes collectors won't share, they may be several reason: - Wanting to make money through bootlegs at a later date (now obsolete). - Wanting to protect the people who leaked the track in the first place. - Holding a promise to whoever gave u the songs in the fisrt place, whatever the reason the promise was wanted may be. - Wanting to keep the privilege for themselves either to catch girls, or be admired, or just feel that one is superior through what he has.
But whatever their original reasons not to share, it seems that more and more "elite" collectors are now willing to share their tracks with the world, and for this I am grateful

just compared my existing Moonbeam Levels with the new version and the 'cymbal crash' a the start sustains longer into the beats on the new version, is this just the hiss reduction on the older version or are they very slightly different?

I like Go alot but I'm totally loving The Line, I wish it was released but then i'm hard pressed to fit it anywhere on Lovesexy..... Maybe replacing The Latest Fashion on Graffiti Bridge?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Even though it was absurdly taken out from the film, TLF is a crucial song in terms of the "story" the album tells. That plus the fact that GB was mostly synth oriented and that the few horns were rough sax by Candy Dulfer, therefore the complex Leeds/Bliss horn arrangements really wouldn't fit there. Now the original version woulda been perfect on GB.
I don 't know where it woulda fit on Lovesexy but it would definitely have been a great b-side. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

A B-Side you say..... Normaly that would be an insult for a song but for Prince it's almost a bigger complement than Album Track.
With that in mind I think If Trust were a single The Line would be the perfect B-side

I LOVE The Max 1988! I wish that was realeased insted of the The Max from the Symbol album. Much more funky and no Tony M. This is a great release. We needed a little ruffle in the Prince waves. Thanks to all involved!
