Talking about T, I wonder why he's not around anymore. Back in the days, I remember reading his posts in AMP & Housequake, it was so interesting to learn more about the jewels he had collected. Still today, I wonder how a single man could dig into Prince's vault and pull out hundreds of songs like he did. This all story is truly amazing when you think about it. Even though he's not around anymore, I hope he's getting well. He may be around 50 now. Time is passing.

lol This is so funny that he is being talked about so much here. I'm gonna tell him to look at this. Maybe he'll write a post and correct any possible "legendary" misconceptions.

Obi-Wan Kenobi? Maybe he's referring to old Ben Kenobi. He lives out by the Dune Seas.

Seriously. Best thread in ages. To paraphrase Bart, this is infinitely more interesting than discussing Prince's ass.

Just a quick sound quality check for "Perfect Unreleased Prince, Volume 2". Please note that I'm not an expert on where to find the best sounding version of studio outtakes.

  1. Irresistible Bitch - way worse sound quality than on WI2.0 (although NR artifacts can be heard on the WI2.0 version)
  2. Baby, You're A Trip - way better sound quality than on WI2.0
  3. Lust U Always - better sound quality (more bass, at least) than on version leaked earlier this year (I’d say even better than on T’s excerpt or at least just as good)
  4. Purple Music - exact same sound quality as on WI2.0
  5. Computer Blue - exact same sound quality as on 30YoUF1
  6. Electric Intercourse - not a studio outtake, not interested smile
  7. Possessed - slightly better sound quality than on WI2.0 (?)
  8. All Day, All Night - exact same sound quality as on BoC
  9. Our Destiny - better sound quality (more bass, at least) than on version leaked earlier this year
  10. Go - full version (the 90-second snippet has a better sound quality, though)
  11. Baby Go-Go - full version (and better sound quality than on WI2.0, anyway)
  12. Data Bank - exact same sound quality as on BoC
  13. Rebirth Of The Flesh - exact same sound quality as on 30YoUF2
  14. The Ball - exact same sound quality as on WI2.0
  15. Witness 4 The Prosecution - worse sound quality than on BoC
  16. The Line - new
  17. Fuchsia Light - new
  18. The Max - new
  19. Dance With The Devil - same sound quality as on WI2.0 (but more bass)
  20. Come - same version as on "The Dawn" (v4.1)

So, on volume 2, I'd say the following tracks are "essential":

  • Baby, You're A Trip
  • Lust U Always
  • Possessed (?)
  • Our Destiny
  • Go
  • Baby Go-Go
  • The Line
  • Fuchsia Light
  • The Max

A pretty good collection if you ask me!

Thanks! Those were my impressions, too. The most important song to me is Moonbeam Levels. It sounds slightly better than WI2, but I sort of wonder if my ears are just hearing what I want to hear.

Isn't this the same version from The Dawn set? The electro version from TBE spliced with the live band version (Come #2?)?

T didn't work there. Edel is a German company.

By that time Prince had heard about those releases.

So he did hear about them??? That guy said he didn't but he may not have known I guess. Wonder how Prince reacted, do you know the whole story about this?

Most likely only the PPR releases previous to WB becoming part-owner. They had plenty of upcoming releases that never left the vault.

Not sure I understand what u mean. Wasn't WB part-owner of PP since day 1??? eek

Question: how did working in the NPG Store allow him to put his hands on Vault songs? Was there a direct way to access the tracks or was it just because it allowed him to know the right people?

If you wanna meet Prince freaks, what better place?

AFAIK T only started being active in the mid/late 1990s. I still recall seeing him advertising his wares on amp and thinking "can't be worth it" -- untill I read other people's rave reviews. It also helped that he shared a ton of information. So many times where he proved that he wasn't bulshitting by uploading a pristine MP3 of a track/snippet that only circulated in horrible quality. I recall hearing the "Hallway Spech" in crystal clear quality after years of only having a muddy copy... Or getting his releases and blasting them really loud and thinking "man these things sound as good as official releases and all he has as a source is a crummy cassette copy".

So there were earlier sources indeed, as early as the mid 80's... I can hardly see T. stealing them directly at PP anyway because ChronicFreeze explained that when sent by Prince to get a particular tape, one couldn't access the Vault without the company of a bodyguard... On the other hand the fact that, as stated by Ufoclub, he was recognized by PP's security implies that he may have managed to steal stuff directly from there... This is bloody fascinating...

U know, when all is said and done it could be quite fascinating if someone published a history of Prince bootlegs: how the tracks leaked, all the stories between the "elite" traders, etc.

Ain't gonna happen, because inevitably you'd burn a source that might still be sitting on some sweet outtakes. Sure, he hasn't let go of those in years, but all it takes is one financial setback... Don't forget that in plenty of cases those things can be traced back to people who still get a regular cheque from Prince for copyrigths etc.

Well... People get old and eventually when death approaches they get less picky about protecting secrets, so who knows, maybe one day... wink

Like I said earlier, ChronicFreeze explained that one can't just access the vault without a security guard standing next, so it's very mysterious indeed. One could always argue that security guards can be corrupted but still...

IIRC, one of few excerpts that I read by T. in the late 90's was one where he explained that because of the stolen outtakes, he was disgusted by the community and that he wouldn't speak anymore. Kinda answers your question I guess...

I didn't pay much attention while listening but I thought Come was the extended version of the Beautiful Experience version that we've had for ages. I'd compare but somehow I lost the bloody mp3 of that particular version mad Isn't it similar?

It's the fan-made version, so it's not a "real outtake", but it's very well done. Not sure how it fits on this "Perfect Unreleased Prince" compilation.

it fits about as well as andy allo's "love is a losing game" on version 1 of this set lol

but every prince outtakes bootleg needs a few WTF tracks, it's just tradition smile

loving all these good quality outtakes recently. parade demos, boc, this one, the few

songs that were released through other channels like 'can i play with you' extended,

'for lust', released by jill.

The Line seems to be really really fast.

I changed the speed -2.0 in Audacity and it sounds better. -4 made it way to slow.

Somebody with a better ear and better software might be able to figure it out.
