Nah that's the old school terminology Prince used when he first got into the industry. When has he ever focused on one album?

You're right. I mean in terms of full out promotion. He's a forward-thinker really. P ain't gonna go out on tour for a whole album for 2-3 years. Maybe a couple of months or possibly a year. Look at what happened with Musicology... Check me out and add me on:

I feel as if you are not channeling LoveSexy enough these days. I mean, it's a lackluster album for sure, but have you considered the fact that perhaps Prince is exposing us to shades of emaculate nuance, and you just didn't pick up on it? Don't nail yourself to your own self-inflicted stauros or sufficate on your own chemtrails on this. Open up.

The notion that Ol Skool Company could've been a hit is one of the most delusional ideas I've heard in ages, let alone the project as a whole.
Dance 4 Me was was the one track that had a chance. As we've seen, he tried, and it didn't make a dent.

I live in the same universe as you. I thought the album was great. It charted high. However it could have been promoted more and better than it was. That's all I am saying. "New Power slide...."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, that's just it, isn't it. Katy Perry and Lady Gaga promote the hell out of themselves and their music. Prince? Not so much. If he sold himself as much as either of these ladies his impact would be felt more. That's how the business of music works. "New Power slide...."

I think he's talking both promotion and artistic value. I'm willing to bet P did MPLSoUND with his eyes closed. It would take a Katy Perry and Lady GaGa to get heaps of hype and praise to do stuff like what P did on that album. The reality is Katy Perry and Lady GaGa is relevant in the eyes of the mass public in today's music marketplace. P...not really, but he still manages to have a album go to the top ten when it's in the stores. He has his core audience and the converts really. The difference is that he just choses to do what he wants to do.

if u work for mickey mouse than yeah sure promotion affects things .. ur just a face with a team propping you up
prince was never successful because of "promotion" .. that is a complete bullshit notion that ANY prince record could be more successful because of promotion ..
prince was successful because of QUALITY ..
mnplsound could never and will never be successful because it is a BAD record .. top to bottom same with lotus flower ... sure some great ideas but its still prince RAPPING aka CRAPPING all over every song or throwing in super bad lyrics gadgets and what not ..
wake up prince fanatics ... prince cant make a good record anymore .. if a record blows .. it blows .. even justin beiber needs a bonafide hit to propel him .. he may sell a few million on the follow up but its because he had at least one credible song to work with from the start ... prince had tons of credible songs .. and thats why he can still move a quarter mil .. but after 20 bad records the general public will not bother until he puts an actual GOOD song on his record .. he has not done that here
a better thread title would be .. could "feel better" have been a hit if he kept the chorus and did ANYTHING other than rap ... sure .. totally possible .. good groove good chorus .. but as is .. its rubbish

Prince was successful not only for quality, but also for being a forward thinker from a business stand point. Part of it has always been progression for him and it works. Check me out and add me on:

This thread is a joke, right? People can't honestly think that MPLSoUND would have been a big hit. No matter how much we like it or hate it, the average person gives two shits about Prince. This cd set sold for a dollar at Target. It's full of filler. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

When I saw 'mega hit' album, I actually giggled.
We are talking Prince here, and it's really just impossible for it to be a 'mega hit'. Hell, it's nealry impossible for him to ever have a megahit again. Prince just wierds people out too much now. His persona "being cool and elusive" has become old, tired, and offputting; especially to a younger audience that doesn't view any of that mess as alluring or interesting.
And with the hype of albums like 20Ten being put in newspapers, Prince reached 3 million people--he should have released an amazing album---then there would have been buzz. Instead, he just further solidified the fact (in most people's minds) that "MJ is the king of pop, yadda yadda yadda."
But.... I feel as if you are not channeling LoveSexy enough these days. Probably because it's a song to a baby girl about how much he wants to fuck her mother. It may not have been controversial, but it sure was creepy. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

I really like MPLSound.
But wrong single choice:
But still the album is wonderful.
ps. I am not sure there actually was a (promo-) single or a music video only??

Okay, this WHOLE thread has got to be one huge fuckin' joke. There's nothing about this so-called album that says it could've been a hit, let alone a "megahit". The album is shit, pure and simple. You want to know why it didn't do shit beyond the very first week of sales?? Because I'm sure at least SOME radio programmers took a listen to it for potentials singles, and heard absolutely NOTHING! So, they weren't going to give shit on there any real airplay. Prince said they were all ready for radio?? Sure, the Fisher Price toy radio that plays 2 seconds of shit when you press the big red button.
Those programmers heard some 50-year old trying to be a part of the "cool" crowd with shit songs crafted that had some Linn samples added over top of them to make them even shittier songs. And then the muthafucka had the nerve to call the album Minneapolis Sound!!! He thinks his fanbase is stupid! We KNOW what the the real Minneapolis sound sounds like, and it ain't that....by a mile!!
So, to answer the OP's question, hell to the NO, and stop doin' those damn bath salts and cocaine and then getting online and posting bullshit like this!!!

He doesn't want to do Valentina, she's a kid, he wants her mum, Salma Hayek. How is asking someone's kid to get their mum to give you a booty call reflective of everyday life?
I really like the track but it's wrong on many levels. RIP

TheEnglishGent,
You make a very good point, which is what is so funny about the track.
Now, for that cup of tea..."Valentina, can you get mummy please?"

I'm laughing up in here, some of y'all really need to switch up a gear and examine how blinded you've become
I simply can't disagree with those saying the album is mostly filler - it is. It failed because it's not very good. Yes, It really could be that simple.
Maybe Prince has finally realised he doesn't get a free pass even with his hardcore fanbase! hene the hiatus.
The whole Lotusflow3r debacle was probably a complete slap in the face for Prince - he 'promoted' it by first streaming ' Another Like Me' and - if you remember at that time - even many hardcore fans were , like, wtf is this shite... ..
Low join up numbers probably made Prince suddenly realise his current output aint seen as very good - despite being likely told the contrary by the yes people around him.
Imo he's taking time out from recording because he finally realises he's damaging his legacy with current releases. The mainstream are simply not listening and more and more hardcore want remasters and outakes rather than new stuff
Dance 4 Me is arguably the best Mpls track - even with a club mix people weren't interested. Says plenty.
Live - he's doin ok - nothing groundbreaking, but he's making money. Studio wise - thank goodness he's taken a break to re evaluate - he needs to.
But please! megahit album - nah, too much filler. He'll only get that success again if he comes bak with a stella album - and it's at this point it's debatable whether he's actually holding back the good stuff for when the industry problems are sorted, or whether he's simply dried up creatively. We all, of course, would hope that the former is true and that's what keeps a lot of us interested after all these years.

I hate the bit that keeps going "Heyyyyy, Valentina!" Ruins an otherwise dark and lonely song. Hit album? There is what I consider worse out there but then again Prince and I are both ills men now. Saying that Springsteen does okay. On Radio 2! Lol!
