I hope he answers the call, because if the vids I just saw are any indication of what's coming from D'Angelo, there are going to be some major comparisons again! I wish he was as disciplined as Prince...

Prince probably looked at the footage and laughed going "still ain't me" while eating his greens and reading his Bible with Andy and Shelby. lol

Just like Coldplay will never top U2 or Radiohead, how Gaga will never top Madonna, GnR could never top The Stones, and how Wendy Williams will never top Rona Barrett...nobody will ever top Prince.

What's a deck of charades?

It is a great song though. Hope he finally comes through and puts something out!

Know what I mean? What a wasted time/career. At this point, D is closer to a "never was" than he is a "has been." His, arguably, biggest hit is a blatant Prince homage.

How old is D'angelo? Compare his career to Prince's at any point. D'Angelo hasn't even had his "Dirty Mind" break through yet. At his peak, D'Angelo never was more than the R&B darling that Prince was with "I wanna Be Your Lover".

I thought 'Condensate' was supposed to put him on notice? We see how that went. Let D'Angelo re-establish his career and drop a disc or 2 then worry about him putting anyone on notice. It usually takes more than one track to make another artist feel threatened anyway!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I can't see how they could Timmy. I mean how are they going to compete with a internationally-known musician with a 30-year plus music career/experience? How are the followers (musicians/artists) going to top Prince, when they don't have the full ingredients to be Prince? They could try to sound like him, but to top Prince, they'll have some major work to do. Prince owns the ingredients to being Prince, and locked that up in a bottle and sealed it a long time ago. He made that clear in his song "There Will Never Be Another Like Me" and he wasn't lying when he said that.

I like D'Angelo's performance style. Although his singing/performance style to me is like Al Green having a cornbread and collard greens, with red beans and rice dinner after church, type of R&B/soul gritty style, combined with some soul claps, hallelujahs and amens.

Every once in a while some artist will cook up a track that immediately sounds so Prince-like you could swear he wrote it for them or they covered some unreleased jam then the next song comes on and it's gone. It's easy to do it for a song but I've yet to come across an artist who can sustain it for an entire CD.

This is true. I was in the post office about 2 months ago, and I heard a male singer on the radio station playing there, singing a cover of Smokey Robinson's, 'Cruisin', and I swore it was Prince at first, but then listened a little longer and realized it was D'Angelo.

I also used to think that group that sang "Oh Sheila" was part of Prince's other groups, and couldn't believe they weren't. That group really copied Prince's sound, but it was still Prince's sound regardless. There were a lot of groups back in the mid 80s that tried to copy his sound, where you often thought it was either a Prince associated group or like you said, a song he wrote for them. But none of those groups or solo artists, that tried to copy that sound, outlasted Prince.

About D'Angelo, I'm not going to lie, I watched D'Angelo's performance of S, D, MFR. innocent angel... Yes, I know it had the cussing in the title, but he did a good job performing it. Very bluesy, intense song.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't ShelbyJ one of D'Angelo's backup singers long before she joined the NPG?

Oh come on Skywalker, you know better than that.

You´re right about him being a bit slow but that doesn´t take away from his talent. Maybe he just had a streak of bad luck. Maxwell and Sade are also mad talented, and they´re not the most prolific artists either.

So what if D´Angelo was fat for a while? He was under a lot of pressure and fighting his demons inside. What matters is that he´s still very gifted, still is healthy and alive and creative, and he´s done some interesting, energetic shows in Europe where he played new songs. And he´s been working on his guitar skills.

I´ve never compared Prince and D´Angelo, I like both of them and of course he doesn´t compare to Prince, why should he, he is a Prince fan himself. Would we compared Prince and James Brown? Or Sly? ( I know many do, but you get the point).

His biggest hit, as you call it, has never meant much to me, I never liked it back then and still don´t like it, and the video to it seems to have put a curse on D´Angelo.

Cut him some slack, he´s back, and he´s good.

And in top shape again. ( Not that that really matters to me, but hey, it´s showbiz.) wink

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yup.

Wow thanks! I see ?uestlove was in there too. As a matter of fact I remember my son had taped a short clip of a show in at a club in NYC, a couple of years before Shelby J joined the NPG. So when I saw her in Vegas, I recognized her pic and braided haistyle to be the same person in Martin Luther's show at a club in NYC. Who knew I would later see her perform in Prince's band a couple of years later.

The below isn't my son's clip, but I found 2 different clips from someone else on yt of Miss Shelby singing with Martin Luther as well. Shelby's been around. Nice soulful voice. I see why Prince appreciates her voice.

The consensus seemed to be that OK Go did it with Of The Blue Color of The Sky.

Condensate? That album is pretty good, but hardly something to put someone on notice. Prince has had at least a couple of fairly recent releases that are better.

I was just pointing out that every once in a while a thread will pop up that someone is doing Prince better than Prince or this song is sure to put a fire under Prince's ass. A single track isn't going to shake a dude who's got 30 years under his belt(for that matter neither would an entire CD).

Exactly, and on top of that, if their music career can even last as long as Prince's, and if they are able to achieve and maintain a 30-year plus, music career these days. Although it's not unusual for a musician/artist to duplicate another's sound/music style, if they don't have the creative skills to take that musician's music style and make it recognizable as their own to claim, then they'll just sound like the musician/artist whose sound they're trying to duplicate. With that being said, it must be a good feeling though, when a musician/artist sees other artists embrace their music styles, and try to duplicate it.

Prince probably sits back laying in the cut, chillin' and watch some of these artists who try to do that, and says to himself in a good way, "Everybody wanna be me."
