Hidden 'Details'..(You Might Need Your Headphones:) Let's Play A GAME!
First off, I love details; because often it makes up the whole picture in a sense.
OK; so this isn't really a game essentially; but I am curious if you have caught on some details in Prince's music; you probably missed upon first listen or a couple of listens.
I think quality headphones/Stereos really bring out sounds unheard of with just an average music player. Still even in normal audio sound boxes, there are details that might jump out at you, if payed greater attention to. These are details I find very smart and always shocking to find. I am going to give 3 songs; where Prince's production came in a sudden surprise to my ears.
'All This Love' - If you listen closely at 2:52; when Bria says "You're DEEP Enough" Spooky Electric returns for only a second, and joins her by reciting with her "YOU'RE DEEPER ENOUGH". Haha..It kind of scared me when I first heard it..lol. Now; I think it's a pretty cool, weird detail...Prince decided to add.
'Power Fantastic' - My favorite song, I have literally slaughtered over multiple listens;...lol. I am not sure if you'll catch this detail with the Edit of this song. (I tried the edit, and I did not notice it?) Or maybe your version may not have it...But the extended version (with the solo in front) AT the very end of this song, you hear a moaning..Much like it's Wendy or someone else in the studio..It's very short..But it goes something like "Ohhh, Ohhh". I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS SONGS HUNDREDS OF TIMES..I don't think my ears are playing games on me...lol
'Madrid 2 Chicago' - MAYBE, this one was obvious..but not for me..lol. SO after he says; "I got nothing but you on my mind...(His backing vocals come in..) AND you hear "Nothing but eating that pussy..." ..I remember being like when I first heard that..LOL.
AND since 'Madrid 2 Chicago is a lesser known track; I'll add one more from 'MPLSound'..I just recently caught.
'Valentina' - In his backing vocals; Prince is talking to himself, and he uses this 'Rough Stereotypical Mexican' accent, and he says.. "East LA. Homie...and Mucho Loco"...Hahaha..,It's hilarious..How he says it..and uses this vocal delivery...
NOW it's your turn!
Now of course their are many other examples, and not just lyrical examples, but music stabs he's added that sounds very unique. Much like; 'Dolphin' when he says "That stands to catch U when u fall" and then he makes the guitar sounds as if it's falling down. That's very cool too! I am just curious to hear what are some details you probably missed. Sometimes we can look too deep into things and find absurd things..lol....But then their are times where certain perks stand out to you.
So share with me some missing details the average listener might not be so quick to catch. Lyrically or musically..What raised your eye brows??
Let's go!

I'm not sure this qualifies, but if you have have some really nice aftermarket headphones, Musicology has all sorts of little moments in every song that you would have missed on first (or repeated previous) listens.

In D.M.S.R at the breakdown...it sounds like he is either saying "Prince is a Fag" or "Satan Is God'...I hear both! It's sung in tune with the bass line... If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Cool. I hear something wierd in the background on part "If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life" when i use to work in office I had these nice headphones and always thought I heard someone say hi or something and I would always take off my headphones and look around. After the 3-4 listen of Musicology album I figured it was something in the background on that song. Still can't make out sound. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Something In The Water - 2:56 Sounds like he's hitting the microphone for some reason, I don't know what that is.

Hold up -- what!?!? I don't have that song anymore, so I can't listen but I believe you. He was a Jehova's Witness at the time! JWs can't go down on people. How does Prince manage to stay in this religon?

This won't make sense to anyone else but when I listened to We March on The Gold Experience as a youngster, I used to think I could hear my mum shouting my name from downstairs. Just at the word "kind" at the "angry thoughts the racist kind" part. I must've stopped my cd player a good few times & shouted down the stairs "Whit is it mam?!" until I realised it was just a sound on the cd that sounded like her dulcet tones calling me! Felt like a fool when I realised! [Edited 6/27/12 7:24am]

I love the sound his feet make on One Nite Alone.
He is so still while waiting for his mark on The One that his lips smack open before he sings the line, "If you're looking for a man that'll sweep you off your tired weary feet.". Left ear. . Hello!

During the final minute or so of We Can Funk (the released one) you can hear him doing another deep layered mix trak of him screaming the fuck outta himself "ahhhh ahhhh." "Climb in my fur."

Hahahaha..'Prince' manages to stay in it; because it doesn't seem as if Prince really cares for 'Rules' and The Watchtower Society...lol
IMO; he seems to only be a 'JW' when it's convenient for discussion. Haha..
I thought the same thing though; he was a JW at the time; (Still is) and he talked about eating pussy...LOL. You got to hear it for yourself again, just so the expression on your face can be in surprise. AND honestly this song could have been about his wife at the time. Even though Mani seems like such a 'Chill' girl; I know she gets hot..Everyone does though.
Also, I don't think JW's are restricted in the bed room; they can do whatever they please..so going down ain't no sin. lol. AND if it was..Prince would not care..lol

Good findings!!!
I heard his lips smack..lol
On 'One Nite Alone' their are heaps of sudden surprises. You hear everything in the studio; like him walking away from the piano on the final track...I love that. It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Nice thread. There are many others that I'd have to sit and think about. I've always found listening to Prince thru headphones exposed so much more whether it be vocals or instruments. I've been sayin this since the late 80's. It always made me appreciate just how much detail he put into a song. At the same time it's too bad most only hear what's at the surface. A good set of headphones is the only way to hear everything going on imo.
Another thing I found years ago was listening to Prince thru a Dolby Pro Logic system you could hear stuff that is not noticable when played thru the surround speakers if I mute the mains. The Gold Exp. is one that jumped out at the time. Pussy Control has all sorts of stuff going on especially the begining. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!"

"Madrid 2 Chicago" - yup, he says that. It's one of those "it can only be Prince" moments. There are acts that have been sexually explicit in music since the 90s, but he does explicit in a way that's still somehow "classy" or "sensual" in a strange way.
"Music stabs" - in "4ever" after he sings "if I never get to make you laugh" and then musically it sounds like laughter.

On the 12" that was never released he supposedly says "and any of my other output in the 21st century"

Yes, he smacks the microphone, because he's so angry/emotional. Doesn't he say 'bitch' right before or after?
