The Muppet Show & Prince's Street Cred

I was just watching Prince's Muppet Show performance and I realized that he

chose the show as an appropriate venue to increase awareness of his plight

against Warner Brothers, and to increase his street cred.

The guy is wearing NPG blazers in the show, he's calling Muppets "Fool!"

like Mr. T, and he's taking swipes at Record Producers. I mean, TOTALLY

something 9 year old kids are going to be ALL OVER.

My goodness, this is more convincing than Eminem increasing hi street

cred by going after NYSYNC and Britney Spears. Shit GOT real with the

Muppet 'bear' security gaurd for a moment. I though Prince was actually

going to punch him.

One thing's for sure--if you gleam anything from having watch the show,

you better learn quick not to cross Prince's Raspberry Sorbet singing ass.

First of all, I just LOVE the muppets show - I just think it's the funniest show. but seeing Princey on it had a kind of depressing feel about it. I'm wondering if it's because of the songs he chose to sing on the show ie She gave her angels, Starfish & coffee - just seemed like really weird song choices for a kids show (well the starfish one isn't too bad 4 kids I guess).

I don't know, he just didn't seem very happy. Maybe it was the whole WB dispute, his relationship with Mayte or maybe he's just not a very good actor

lol

pray Peace in the House of Prince.

It was kind of depressing to hear she gave her angels and he didn't smile a whole lot, but I LOVED the Starfish and Coffee scene. If he was interacting with real children and not muppets it would melt my heart. mushy

Street Cred? I kinda cringed at him while he was wearing that big white coat and calling the bear a fool. lol But I laughed too.

I absolutely LOVE Prince on The Muppet Tonight. I think he's a really good sport by poking fun at himself, which surprised me. This is something I like to watch when I'm sad cause it makes me smile. Mind you "She gave her angels" did seen a little depressing for a show as silly as The Muppets.

Come on, ya'll, the alligator / farmer scene is the best!

I thought it was fun. The Raspberry Beret/Sorbet parody, the alligator joke with Prince dressed up as a farmer. And he even premiered a new song, She Gave Her Angels, which wasn't available anywhere at that time. The only downside was that Miss Piggy wasn't in it.

My personal highlights

"Pretty mouthy for a guy with no name"

The muppet wearing cheekless, leather chaps.

Alligator dog

Prince wearing overalls

As a Muppet Show fan and a Prince fan, I think both stayed pretty much true to form. I liked the show. And, Prince seems to have moments where he likes to show that he is somewhat a regular guy, which is how I took his appearance on the Muppet Show. I especially liked the slight change of "Starfish and Coffee" and the skit that accompanies it works very well to articulate the song's message of the importance of being an individual, which is a good message for children. And, "She Gave Her Angels" is one of my all-time favorites. Finally, while we often think that the Muppet Show is just for children, they always have jokes and sketches that appeal to a wide spectrum of ages.

It was not a show just for children. Many of the jokes were actually bordering on being inappropriate for children (assless pants?).

I thought Prince performing "Starfish & Coffee" and "She Gave Her Angels" made that episode seem like it was aimed for children much more than most of the other episodes they did at the time.

"Bear Tracks" was slammin' though.

Loved it!

Here's what bothers ME:

Prince died of an overdose of the drug Fentanyl. Of which, it is very highly fucking likely that he never even knew he'd taken.

Right. Sesame Street was made just for kids but The Muppet Show which aired at night, was always intended to be for both kids and adults to enjoy together. The show was actually called "Muppets Tonight" not the Muppet Show which was produced post Jim Henson.

Prince gave a wonderful performance that is generally remembered fondly.

I'm pretty sure its because his child had just passed away around this time. I'm not too sure about this but if I remember correctly, this episode was from around the time Emancipation came out so it would make sense if he was a little depressed by that loss. He didn't seem that depressed though in my opinion.

I think it was just because he's not a very a good actor.

As for the song selection, he and Mayte were supposedly putting out a children's book with an accompanying album at the time, and "She Gave Her Angels" and the re-recorded "Starfish & Coffee" were going to be on it.
