I've been listening to a lot of jazz music (Coltrane, Horace Silver and Miles Davis) and I wondered what a great change of pace it would be for Prince to start playing instrumental music live. He has a great catalogue of music to play in an intimate setting: Madhouse 8/Madhouse 16 and even N.E.W.S. The Welcome 2 residencies have become this side of stale and with Prince unsure on the best way to release another record, gigs like this would 1) challenge him musically (depending on his backing band) 2) make him mysterious again

Prince would have to get back with Eric Leeds and make sure Eric Leeds gets paid.

The closest tour to that concept was one night alone, where he played in small theaters and opened with a long version of xenophobia. But in europe and japan he mostly played big arenas.

That was a really dumb post by Pentacle.

I believe Prince did a few completely instrumental gigs when he released N.E.W.S. (or did he do just one?). I don't have the bootlegs, so I can't say anything about the quality of the performance(s).

I would be all for Prince doing instrumental music again. I just wish he'd understand to restrict himself a bit with the sounds he's using and not resort to that "anything goes" mentality that's evident on his instrumental works. I think the weakest link with his efforts at fusion jazz have been the keyboard parts. He could use just an acoustic piano or a Rhodes piano and it would be fine (just say "no" to all that rompler stuff). Just try a bit more restricted production style overall and I think the records / performances could be just great.

At this point he's ready to do a great fusion jazz record. Ten years ago? Not necessarily. Now? Yeah.

He does this a lot with his aftershows. And he keeps it exclusive and mysterious for the most part at am hours of the night. He also played Montreux Jazz Fest. And it was bootlegged.

He sometimes plays way too much jazzy intrumental stuff!

He need to play a tour of only new songs soon.
