Nice little mention of Prince as an underrated guitarist on cracked.com Positive article on Prince in a short article on underrated guitarists on www.cracked.com:
Here´s what they wrote ( I won´t post all of the contents because I don´t want to violate the org´s rules....but I recommend checking out their website):
5 Rock Stars You Won't Believe Are Secretly Musical GeniusesQuick, what are the first three names that pop into your head when I say the word "guitarist"? Hendrix? Clapton? Chuck Thudfucker? Nothing wrong with that. All three of those guitarists deserve that sort of respect because they've proven that they're among the best to ever pick up the instrument ... well, except Chuck. All that dude did was fuck thuds. I still don't understand what you people see in him. But what if I told you that in your lifetime, you've seen some of the best guitarists to ever live pass right by, virtually unnoticed, because you were too busy making fun of their wussy bands? And no, I'm not talking about some underground bullshit that you'll only hear about from other musicians -- "What?! You've never heard of Franky Whopflopple and the Hambone Torso? I thought you said you liked music!" I'm talking about big-time bands that at one point in their careers sold out 50,000-seat arenas ...
#3. PrinceGetty The Ridiculous Artist: He's motherfucking Prince. Getty The Amazing Talent: I almost didn't include him on this list because I always thought that people just knew that Prince was a guitar legend. But over the years, I've been continually shocked to find out that many people don't. I can kind of see where they're coming from. Prince's biggest hits have been laced with that synthesizer- and keyboard-based pop sound. And although his solos in songs like "Let's Go Crazy" and "Purple Rain" were insanely good, they weren't the focus of the songs. Because as flamboyant as Prince is, he's one of the few musicians in the world who know how to use subtlety instead of cramming the solo right in the listeners' faces and screaming, "Listen to how fucking good I am!" He uses his talent only as a means of enhancing the song as a whole -- not using the song as a mechanism for showing off his guitar skills. But when he does cut loose ... holy fuck: That's him playing a tribute of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." And for the first half of the video, he plays a basic rhythm piece so subtle that if it wasn't for his blindingly red pimp hat, you'd hardly know he was there. But then the solo comes around, and he just explodes. It's the same in this one: So yeah, behind all the sparkling women's clothing and gyrating fuck-dancing lies one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk the planet. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

The readers´ comments are hilarious. Most of them focus on Prince. And even the negative ones still give him props. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

You were right to question whether to put Prince on the list. I think most people recognize his talent. Personally, I despise the s**t out of him and would probably kick him in the dick if I ever met him, but even I can't deny that he's insanely talented. He's one of those guys that makes me go, "Fuck, I hate this a*****e and his bullshit music. Why does he have to be so damn good?"

I'm afraid he'll remain an underrated guitarist to the masses. Folks know him more due to his showmanship, and the ones who really pay attention to his playing, what do they say? "He's full of tricks and not much substance" or "he should stop biting Santana's ass"
One of my friends(who's from the latter crowd) didn't WANT to believe that it was in fact Prince playing the axe in "Just My Imagination" and the undertaker's version of "Bambi". He was fixated on the idea that it was somebody else in his band, not him [Edited 8/30/12 11:07am]

Yeah, you're right.
The other night I had some musicians over for a jam session. These guys are phenomenal - they've played with guys like Billy Gibbons, Johnny Lee, Willie Nelson, etc. They all know I'm a huge Prince fan, but they always make fun of his musicianship.
So while we were playing some poker, "Fury" came over the speakers. They all turned their heads and said, "Who is THAT? Who's playing that guitar?"
All I did was

Anything Prince does is going to qualify it for a top ten gayest ________ list.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's funny...what I gather from this is that the evidence of Prince's guitar work is from the Youtube video of WMGGW. The author is giving props to Prince, spreading his legacy etc using this as proof - yet Prince willingly destroys this by removing em all the bloomin time! ..sharmone MF..!

Prince is the greatest guitarist and musical genius ever. What Prince transmits through his music flows like an electric current to his audience. This energy moves in a continuous stream until he hits his mark and imparts the desired sensation to his audience Or at least that's what it feels like to me, always #1. imo

They're obviously your friends but I seriously question their abilities if they made fun of his musicianship. Every musician I know respects the hell out of Prince.
I just wish that awful WMGGY solo wouldn't be wheeled out as evidence of his playing. It's got no substance or flow.

It's hard for many to categorise Prince...because he crosses many borders. But as a guitar player, his sound always reminds me of an assembly of strings. I think when he creates some of his solos, he hears an entire orchestra playing in his mind. I would highly recommend folk re-visit the solos in Sacrifice of Victor and Boom. No justice, No peace

I don´t like it very much either. And I thought I was the only one. In my opinion there are far better examples of Prince´s guitar skills and that WMGGW performance is ok but he shows off too much and turns a tribute to George Harrison into his own little show. Nice performance but far from being the best. I´m not impressed and even find it a bit disrespectful towards the other guys on stage and towards George Harrison.
But I wish Prince would allow live recordings to stay on YT so people could see some live renditions of Little Red Corvette, Empty Room or Purple Rain. I love his renditions of those songs. It's one of the few he doesn't own the rights to and can't get removed from the Internet. What do you expect?
