Under the Cherry Moon (the song)

Hi!

For many years, this song was kind of (for me) a little 'tune-out' period between I Wonder U and Girls and Boys. Maybe it's the sparseness of it, or the slowness of it, that had me thinking about the day's agenda or whatnot until the beat of Girls and Boys drew me back in.

*BUT*

I recently really listened to this tune (in sequence with the rest of the album), at high volume on a good sound-system, and was taken back to my first listen back in 1986. Back then, as I ran home with the newly-bought Parade cassette in my hands, this was the new song I was dying to hear - let's not forget: this one wasn't any old song, it was the title track from the upcoming movie, still months away. Was I expecting Purple Rain II? I don't remember, but what I got was so utterly unlike what I was expecting that I actually think this was the song that proved to me that I couldn't possibly predict what this guy was gonna do next.

It's not a song you're gonna bang out on the car stereo, or at a party, but man... it's so interesting! Those weird, quirky keyboard lines (our historical brains like to think that Girls and Boys did it first, but on first exposure to the album, UtCM gets that honour). The strange talk of dying (remember: we wouldn't hear Sometimes it Snows in April for another 20 minutes, and most of us hadn't heard Moonbeam Levels at that point). Not to mention - is this the first song Prince ever did in waltz time?

I love this song again. It'll never be remembered as one of his classics, but man, I think this might be the tune that showed me that there were sides to this guy that I hadn't even begun to dream of.

What do you think of it?

PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

I think it's beautiful and I always have. You're right though, there's a distinctly melancholy tone to both the lyrics and the music . Yet, it's a very romantic - two lovers with the world against them find comfort in each other's arms if only for the moment. It's a lovely sentiment.

I love this song. When I'm trying to convert someone to Prince, usually when drunk, this is one of the songs I use.* I love the way the music goes from light to dark, minor to major along with the lyrics and to me it's one of his more "songwriter" songs, where it's not about the groove, the beat the feel but more about the words, chords and melody. That said, the production is sublime. I love it more and more as time goes by.

* - it rarely, if ever works.

I felt the same way

But I LOVE Prince's piano driven songs

I could see/hear this song playing at a cafe wine bar or quaint neighborhood restaurant

falloff

I know what you mean, it's a rarity in Prince's music to have this kind of melody. Though this was written with his dad, right? The lyrics are decent, too, though to this day I don't know what a cherry moon is!

It's not a bad song at all, it's just the rest of the cd is so good, it gets overshadowed.
