Hypothetical Hologram Situation

Admittedly, I'm a little grilled and the idea is potentially not even worth having, but here it is...

I don't care particularly how you feel about the hologram performances etc. But obviously, the tupac performance got me thinking about the future of dead performers, performing in that medium, or live performers making shows utilising the medium etc, etc, blah, blah, etc

the issue with the dead people performances is that, like the tupac thing, fake pieces had to be added, i.e the dialogue at the start, "...what the fuck is up Coachella?!..."

so now, dig if you will, the following concept...

assume Prince, went into hiding for a few months/a year even if he wanted to push it and recorded hologram specific concerts for potentially post-mortem tours. i don't know if THIS/NOW is the era you'd most want to immortalise with the sort of thing - not that i think Prince would want anything much to do with anything going on after he's out of control.

but imagine say he played 100 songs, hits, medleys, rarities - guest appearances, in a fashion that they could be mixed up and used to build up hologram shows to tour. Obviously, a few versions of some songs (as openers, encores, medley versions - whatever) - but took the time to make something that could be spliced up and work in SO many different ways that not everyone who saw the hologram tour saw the same show.

maybe even thinking of a way to use hologram effectively, just for mindblowing performances while he was still alive - allow me to give an example...

your chilling, watching the show, bang, the real prince busting a big old solo, in a flash of light, or a puff of smoke, he disappears and is seamlessly replaced with the hologram which proceeds to defy gravity, physics etc and grow to 20 foot tall, or levitate.

you know, i think it could be fun if someone did some of these things.

what are your thoughts? smile

Interesting idea. The Beach Boys incorporated video of the two dead Wilson brothers into their recent concerts, so that's another example.

Maybe this is the way we will ultimately get a Revolution reunion. They could even use the hologram while Prince is still alive but just doesn't want to show up for the concerts. Or, alternatively, maybe a hologram of Sly Stone could be incorporated into the cover versions of his songs that Prince regularly does on tour now.

I haven't really kept up with the Tupac thing, but I'm assuming they're just playing studio versions over the sound system? So, I have to say the only reason to attend this would be the novelty of attending and saying you were there - even if I liked the act who's hologram they were projecting it still wouldn't appeal to me - I think it's idiotic.

It wasn't a hologram!!!

It was a big sheet of glass....the basic technology has been around since Victorian time where actors below stage appeared as ghosts on stage. So in the case of Tupac his image (or rather a computer generated image was projected.

The name of the technique is Peppers Ghost after John Pepper who was the first recognised top have used it...even though he tried to pass credit to Henry Dircks who had the original idea but whose versiuon was too costly for theaters. This was in 1862.

Nice to see the old tricks still impresses the kids of today!!!

Thank you, there is a big difference between a hologram and Peppers Ghost. If I'm not mistaken, its the same technology used in the Magic Kingdom.

well that's all interesting to know. i suppose i should've done some more proper research.

i myself have not a lot of interest in the whole shebang, i was just sitting about being sick today and had the thought.

the only appeal to me is the novelty. if there was say an Elvis show to see that could be put on in a regional centre rather than a city, I'd probably go and see something like that.

but yeah, I would agree the whole thing is a bit shitty, but at the same time, it's interesting, so why not think about the things people COULD do with it.

that's all. smile

We'd probably get a show like this:

Hologram 1: Tony M or Damon D wearing Star Trek Next Generation Uniforms rapping about Manure, like in My Name Is Prince.

Hologram 2: Shelby with "Put Your Hands Up" on repeat 599 times per show.

Hologram 3: Andy Allo 40 minute guitar solo.

I think I promised to stop making references to Tony M and Shelby in all future posts. I guess I failed again. Dear Prince: Shelby has great talent, stop making her a crowd flunky. smile

EXACTLY!!!

I used to use this in a haunted house I put on for the local kids. Such simple, inexpensive technology

you guys don't dig the 20 ft prince thing?! That would be the best! I'm sure you could do it where the 'hologram' or whatever is a live image of the real Prince doing his thing beneath the stage.

Anyway, doesn't Pepper's Ghost need a three dimensional object to work properly? That's why it looks so convincing, right? Because you're looking at a semi-reflection of a real 3d object, so it's not like a movie screen where issues with perspective make it look flat. I don't know anything about the Tupac hologram, but I assumed that was the big achievement - making Tupac look 3d somehow, even though there are clearly no more 3d Tupacs around to stick in front of a sheet of glass...

They digitally edited someones voice to sound like him, as it is unlikely there is a recording of Tupac saying anything about Coachella

The whole hologram thing is a bunch of bollox!!!

You don't even watch pre-recorded live footage ... the Tupac Coachella performance was a 3D computer simulation. In other words we didn't watch Tupac perfrom live (no shit! he's dead), we saw what a team of computer programmers wanted us to see.

Following the TS thought.

If that happens you van download a playmobile sized show on your coffee table as being the image projected and resized for any venue. If you want to go backstage, no problem, just walk around the table.

I don't care for the use of this technology for dead performers but I don't believe the technology in itself is bad. I could see it being used by performers alive in the now for certain visuals. Creating certain visuals for certain songs could work ace if done right imo but imo Prince prides himself in being ol' school so I would not bet on him doing such a thing.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

I can dig that. Yeah, i was more thinking of it's potential for living performers. That'd be a trip smile

Agree completely. For dead artists, really creepy and kinda feels disrespectful, dontcha think? Let them R.I.P.
For living performers as visuals, sure - can give a show a cirque du soleil total entertainment feel using current technologies, why not.
But I agree that Prince seems to have branded himself as the consummate live musician, "ol' school." There's a certain expectation that when you see a Prince show, its going to be "about the music," "real music by real musicians," live playing and singing and improvised jams, and that's his signature now.
I don't think he'd like to take himself or his persona or his live shows into Hatsune Miku territory.

Pentacle

A reliable source told me that Prince will be performing 'Bad' with a hologram of Michael Jackson, when 'Bad 25' is launched.

"Now that he is dead, the time is finally right," Prince said.

Apparently Prince also said that when this is successfully pulled off, he will use a hologram of James Brown to make a 'special edition' version of the infamous 'Prince/MJ/James Brown' video.

His lawyers will then have all the old versions removed from YouTube and replace them with this.

I has the same idea. think the 2004 Staples simulcast but in full 3d in stadiums around the world.

oh and Prince himself predicted this in 1985! in the rolling stones interview.

and i also wondered if it was really a hologram or something else. then again even a hologram has to be projected against something. one theory would be something like in star wars where is seems some particles are being sprayed out onto which the image can be projected.
