Favorite Prince vocal? Mine is Grand Progression

I think Grand Progression is my favorite Prince vocal of all time. Close runners-up would be Damn U, Power Fantastic, Condition of the Heart, and Soul Sanctuary.

What are yours?

I agree with a lot of the songs mentioned here (I love Little Red Corvette!), but it's hard to pick a favorite. There are so many to choose from, and it depends on my mood too. smile So... I'd add:

Do U Lie? -- A mini vocal roller coaster

Darling Nikki -- Didn't really hit me how remarkable Prince's vocals are here until I listened to a certain pop star's version, which sounded flat/one-dimensional.

If I Was Your Girlfriend -- Technically Camille wink , but I love the delivery!

Shhh -- Mmmm... like butter...

I like it when he's losing his voice like on the early version of "Elephants & Flowers" where his voice is lower and rough.

I think from a techincal standpoint TMBGITW showcases his staggering range. It goes from his lowest lows to some truly astounding highs in addition to showcasing his fantastic mutlitracked "Choir of Princes" skill.

For technical skills AND awesome delivery that even non-musicians can appreciate, I'd say Adore is pretty hard to beat.

Vocally, Damn U is probably Prince's best falsetto ever!

Yep. Too bad it's buried and blurred by 7 metric fucktons of unnecessary reverb, though.

Choir of Princes! What an awesome description AND visual! wink I love songs that showcase this. KingSausage mentioned Condition of the Heart. For You is another nice example. Also, I have a soft spot for the vocals on the I Hate U extended remix. Hell hath no fury like a choir of Princes scorned!

Adore is perfection... sigh...

Too many! smile I try to be as picky as possible when I post so I don't end up listing his entire catalogue, but then I always remember another good one after the fact. And when you think of live performances, ANY song has the potential to become a favorite Prince vocal. Endless possibilities!

I am convinced Prince used his Purple Rain money to record that song out of space. He ordered his own purple ship to record it on some planet called 'Power'. razz He also took the time to record all of the Dream Factory outtakes..lol

It's just amazing! As you mentioned..LIVE he changes it up so good and it becomes just the best!

I use to hate 'Nothing Compares 2 U' But in 2009 at Montreux he made me love it! smile That performance gives me chills all the time. That's (And Mary J's duet at the W2A) are the only versions I can only listen to though! LOL..Still it's amazing!

Hard 2 pick 1 but 1 that sticks out is "Scandalous"
The vocal is so intense and dripping with emotion kinda sounds like it's about to crack but doesn't and stays right on that edge
sometimes I listen and think the voice may be slightly sped up (higher) and other times i think no it isn't?? I can't quite work it out...

Do U Lie and Soul Sanctuary. For some reason his falsetto sounds much clearer on those songs then in anyother Prince recordings I can think of. Plus the medley's and the mood his voice adds to those songs knock them out of the park for me. Easily two of my favorite Prince songs. I actually bought Emancipation for Soul Sanctuary alone then fell in love with a lot of the other songs on it.

That song Grand Progession is not one I like a lot , it just doesn't move me. As for my favorite vocals , When 2 R in Love, Soul Sanctuary and Mountains close the deal.

That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. wink

I need to check out those performances of Nothing Compares 2 U! I really want to love a Prince version of this song.

I've just been listening to Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic again.

It's the same version as on the regular Rave Un2 but "I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore" is pretty special vocally IMHO. cool

Hahaha..I was just like you at one time..I could not stand any version by Prince of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' but the one at Montreux really brings chills down my spine. He sounds as if he voice is going out..AND that is when Prince sounds the best IMO. I love the cracked breathing while singing..it's like when he screams...IT adds so much to the song. smile
