In his interview with George Lopez, he said he is a vegetarian. not sure if there's anything more recent where he talks about it.

Correct. Prince’s status as a vegetarian/vegan changes over time, but he was raised seventh day adventist and has kept away from red meat his entire life. If you dig enough you’ll find rumors that he does not actually handle veganism well, for example, some people suggest that switching to veganism had something to do with the freakout that led up to the black album cancellation.

Prince went to macdonalds in the latter half of the 80s and bought everyone mcd's, and I'm sure he bought himself a cheese burger aswell.

I remember i read something years ago that said he became a vegetarian in '86 & vegan in '90. I do know that he has been into organic wholefoods for a long time & loves his herbal tea's smile .

Yeah I've always heard stories about him smelling McDonald's desperately wishing he could afford a cheeseburger!

I've never heard that seventh day adventist's dont eat red meat. There is a church near where i live & i have known many of the family's for over 30 yrs (grown up with them) & nearlly all of them eat some form of red meat - lamb, goat, beef etc. The story about prince standing outside mcdonalds as a child is more about hunger/hard times & being out on the road at 12 than him craving a hamburger.

I suppose you are responding to jpnyc.

Seventh-Day Adventists strive to be, and/or are encouraged to be, vegetarian. That's why the SDA church sells a line of vegetarian food products. There is no McDonalds, or any fast food restaurant, in the city of Loma Linda, CA, where the largest SDA hospital and large SDA congregation are located. Coincidentally, Loma Linda, CA residents have one of the longest lifespans in the world, with a large number of centenarians. Let's hope Prince gets to be at least 100 years old one day too!

However, SDAs generally do not shame nor shun people who are not strictly vegetarian; moreover, they generally do not shame nor shun anyone for "breaking" any beliefs (unlike JWs??). The SDA church is a big lobbyist around the world for "religious freedom." From the official website adventist.org: "The Adventist church is committed to the principle meaning of religious freedom: The differences in religions, throughout the world, should be respected. What we choose to believe and how we choose to worship should be according to the dictates of our conscience."

As to their dietary practices, this again from the official website: "It also means that because our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to care for them intelligently. Along with adequate exercise and rest, we are to adopt the most healthful diet possible and abstain from the unclean foods identified in the Scriptures. Since alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and the irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics are harmful to our bodies, we are to abstain from them as well. Instead, we are to engage in whatever brings our thoughts and bodies into the discipline of Christ, who desires our wholesomeness, joy, and goodness."

The "unclean foods identified in the Scriptues" refers to the foods that Jews and Muslims, as religions based on "the word," also avoid - that means, non-kosher red meats, pork, shellfish, invertebrates.

Hope this clarifies things! Have a nice day! smile

Hmmm, if you read carefully, my post says that SDAs are encouraged to adopt a "healthful" diet. According to scientific medical research, the more vegetarian the diet, the more healthful. Therefore, the SDA church encourages vegetarianism.

BUT they do not kick you outta the church if you are not vegetarian; and the church as a whole is culturally relativist (i.e., respects the variety of cultures, as well as belief systems, around the world), so if you are Japanese and eat a sea urchin sushi, they will not condemn you. If you are Hawaiian (or West Indian?) and roast a pig, they will not condemn you. Of the dozen or so Fundamental Beliefs listed on adventist.org and their other publications, vegetarianism per se is NOT a fundamental belief; the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, thus a "healthful diet" for your body AND belief in the kosher/halal laws, are fundamental beliefs. Those scriptural dietary laws require avoidance of non-kosher/halal red meats, pork and shellfish. That means you can eat kosher/halal red meat (beef, lamb, goat), chicken, duck, turkey, fish, etc.

In sum, no worries, your West Indian friends are very likely SDAs "in good standing."

Edit: as a youth missionary on a tiny Pacific Island, I got to slaughter a goat for their feast to honor me, their guest. And though I was there under the guise of the SDA church, I was encouraged by my missionary mentors to kill it (and believe me, I don't know how to do it kosher) and eat it -- out of respect for their culture.

Edit 2: Anyway, none of this has much to do with Prince because he's a Jehovah's Witness. smile

I read your post 'carefully' - did u mine? My initial post was in response to an earlier post where someone said prince was raised a sda & therefore kept away from red meat his entire life. My point was I did not know this as this has not been MY experience as i have eaten red meat with many family's from my local church for over 30 yrs - in their's & my home & at church functions. As u said this is not a fundamental law in the sda church - therefore just because P was raised a sda we do not know for certain that he grew up never eating red meat. As 4 my many friends in the local church - yes they are in good standing with their church thank you & i have no worry's lol - their choice in their spiritual path is their buisness . According to them the jw's are an off shoot of the sda's after the date of armmagedon (sp?) that the sda's had predicted came & went. No doubt i'm wrong & u will correct me! Patriarchal organised religions are not my speciality, sorry - i'm a student of the ancient esoteric traditions/metaphysics. Have a nice day.

I did not want to be condescending; sorry if you took "carefully" that way!

So we are in agreement that the person who said Prince was raised SDA and therefore kept away from red meat had no basis for that statement.

SDAs can eat meat, but they are encouraged to be health conscious, and often hold seminars and talk about it at church. So maybe Prince was influenced somewhat to have healthy habits, who knows. I've read it's his maternal family that was SDA (his grandmother, who took him to church).

As to the thread topic, I saw a pic of him in the Concerts forum with heftier looking arms - he probably could not bulk up his muscles like that in a pretty short space of time without eating any meat.

Lastly - Sorry to get off topic of the thread, but since you brought up JWs being an off-shoot, it's actually that both SDAs and JWs are off-shoots of the Great Disappointment of 1844 (official historical term, not mine), with their roots in Christian revivalism in America in early 19th century, dubbed the Second Great Awakening (involving a wide range of reform movements, including abolitionism, in order to hasten Jesus' 2nd coming because the belief that he'll come only if we've "shaped up"). I just want to mention that, because IMO there's significant difference between JWs and SDAs. SDAs are much more still involved in "reform," whereas the JWs have taken the opposite approach of withdrawing from the world. So JWs don't participate in gov't, don't run hospitals or orphanages, etc. SDAs, however, lobby (for anti-tobacco & religious freedom, for example) and vote, run hospitals, orphanages, schools, promote health foods, run organized missionary work, conduct medical research (medicine that JWs probably don't believe in). And again, SDAs do not "disfellowship" or shun non-members.

Btw, I was raised SDA, but am no longer. I have my own beliefs that do not align with any particular organized religion.

Like? You can get Omega-3 acids in flax seed, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, walnuts and spirulina. Omega 6 is available in pistachios, chestnut oil and olives.

i don't eat meat anymore, about 1, 700, 000-800 000 years ago our ancestors began to eat meat, and we got tapeworm from those animals we did eat in the savannah. ... back then we had to, it was urgency, a matter of survival for homo erectus which was nearly extinct due to climate. now, we don't fricken need to cage animals and kill them so we can fry them in oil and consume them, it just breaks my heart. i don't even eat oysters or mussels or prawn...we are disturbing nature, and mother nature aint gonna put up with that.

"who need the exercise"..lol
