What song/moment made you a fan?

Hi I'm quite new on here and was just curious to know more about you guys, what song or moment made you a fan? How long have you been a fan? Why you love prince? Have you ever wavered?

You know kind of a summary of your prince journey so far!

My brother gave me a SOTT tape when I was 10. SOTT and Housequake did it for me.

Listening to "Little Red Corvette" on vinyl with headphones. Playing it all over and again. I was a big MJ fan at the time and I remember thinking "this guy really is better than MJ, huh.".

Then when I heard what he did with the song when it was used between "Play In The Sunshine" and "Housequake" in the SOTT concert film and I was mesmerized.

I've been a fan since I was 14 (that was when he had just changed his name to the symbol). My interest in Prince got toned down somewhat around 2004-2006, but that's just because I was listening mostly to instrumental music then.

First time round for me was starfish and coffee, I loved how quirky it was!

Them I got put off by graffiti bridge and was getting involved in the London dance club scene e.g. Ministry of sound, fabric, etc....

Then I had kids and a husband with lousy taste in music and the cure and prince were off the radar so I kind of gave up and listened to whatever crap my family liked

May 12 changed everything ...

This time I'm a fan because
- he's such an incredible live performer
- I've always been stars truck by genius of any kind
His guitar playing ( I could watch it all day)
His ballads - so beautiful, erotic and quirky!
The nostalgia
The huge variety of music he Combines

This time I'm a fan forever!

Him singing background in Chaka Khan's "Drama".

Was you getting buuuusy?

I was enamored by his quirky production/background singing. I also feel that album(Come 2 My House) was the starting point that made a fan of both Chaka and Prince.

Next day, copped "Rave" and loved it so much. Got the "Hits/B-Side" and the rest was history. But I gotta say when I joined this forum back in the "black & purple" days, the sheer of info fueled my interest more.

I think it's a good album, but that sounds like a really unusual way to having gotten into Prince's stuff.

My mother had this album, and the cover fascinated me. But what fascinated me more is the production that wa laid beneath Chaka's voice.

I'm kind of at that stage of finding information and listening to all the stuff I haven't heard! Still haven't heard rave, crystal ball, or a couple of others from his more recent music!

The Gold Experience turned me from enjoying his music to wanting to find every guitar solo he'd ever played.

I was about 12 when Diamonds and Pearls was released and I liked Cream, Money Don't Matter 2 Night as well as the album title. I hadn't really thought much of Prince prior to that possibly just being too young to appreciate what his music was all about. I remember a few years earlier as a 9 year old watching the Grammys and Prince had been nominated for Sign O' the Times and I thought "that guys weird."

Fast forward to 1992 or 1993 and I heard Sexy MF and My Name is Prince and I decided to buy the Love Symbol album on cassette. I dont remember if it was because the only album I had but i used to listen to it every day on my way to and from school. Absolutely loved it.

Cream, I saw the video when I was 15 and just mesmerized, he held me in sway, the song, the dancing, the video just blew my mind. I just realised how good he was and just thought I have to hear more of him, I was aware of his music from Alphabet Street onwards, but it was only watching Cream I became a fan. In the space of a week I had the singles of Cream, Gett Off, the Diamonds and Pearls album and a copy of Purple Rain. I was set. The date was sometime in November 1991.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I heard Partyman on a hits cassette tape and loved it as it sounded different than everything else and sooo funky!

Got Grafitti Bridge for my birthday and played it all the time, I didn't like every track (mostly the other people) but I was surprised by his sheer range of styles and fell in love with the title track and still would stand all time etc. Then Diamonds and Pearls came out which blew me away smile

Goodbye MJ!

my mom introduced me to Prince 2years ago just before the 2010 album came out I've always been bought up on black musicians (James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye etc) and music has always been so important to me, she was like take a listen to this, and started playing The Beautiful Ones and it blew me away I was inlove with his music from that moment I went out the next day and bought the Purple Rain album and my mom gave it me on vinyl so I could play it on my record player & I loved it lol I then listened to parade and fell in love with that album too, my dad gave me the Gett Off cd single and I then started hunting round for extended versions of his songs and his albums smile I guess I love Prince because of the way he performs his songs so brilliantly and the amount of work he has put into his career being so prolific as he is, I cant see my self not loving his music

the feeling U get when U fall in love not with a girl or a boy but with the heavens above

I heard Purple Rain on the radio in the car and my Dad said it's a Prince song, then I heard Little Red Corvette at the grocery store and thought WTF is that song! Sure enough it was Prince too. I kind of liked those two songs and then found Musicology (his latest album at the time.) in the News Agents. and I bought it (first album I ever bought too)

PacManPlus

Was made aware of him with "I Wanna Be Your Lover"

Liked what I heard with "Controversy" (the song), "1999" (the song), and "Little Red Corvette" (was big into MJ, KISS, Ozzy, Donna Summer, DuranDuran at the time)

Once I went to see Purple Rain (on my birthday, no less - July 29, 1984), that was the end. smile

Started buying all albums, bootlegs, etc. after that.

17 days. I had been a lukewarm Prince fan when I was in middle school, but since I knew my peers wouldn't understand, I sort of kept it to myself. This was around the time the "Gold" album came out and I absolutely loved "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World"...but fast forward to my college days. I was in the computer lab, bored and decided to check out the NPG Music Club site. I eventually joined and there was a part where they would play snippets of P's music. This is when I first discovered and heard "17 days" and I was sold. I became an official Prince fan and started running around to different record stores trying to buy as many of his albums that I could find. It got to the point where the only thing I would play in my car was Prince. I couldn't function without at least listening to one Prince song a day. lol

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I have my husband to thank, only two years and a half years ago in fact. We were planning our wedding and as a filthy inside joke he suggested Cream as the song for the cake cutting. I love it and as a wedding gift he gave me Ultimate Prince.

13 albums, 2 DVD's, 1 blu-ray later I was left wondering how I didn't exists without Prince in my life for 24 years!

I loved Purple Rain, Cream, 7, Thieves and all those - but did not quite get into following him, although loved those songs.

I was more into Madonna then - and other artists too of course -

then I drifted from being a big Madonna fan (but still buy her albums just coz I always have and I am a completist - wanting to keep all the albums) - then got into visiting the Queen catalogue then got into Freddie Mercury - (that voice.......) & also Michael Jackson.

Then a marriage breakup kind of put the brakes on my Queen fad (no idea why????) but I started to look for something else - then I stumbled on Princes video Black Sweat - and loved it - so stylish and the music so hauntingly funky. So that began my search for more videos & music - so I ended up buying all the official stuff at a rapid rate and now dig for the harder to find items.

I have not stopped loving him since - but there are some times I listen to him more than others - but the tour has just made me more obsessive and my daughter is about to kill me if I keep mentioning him everyday as I am !!!!!

I think I shall always follow him the rest of my/his life now - because it is such an interesting ride........ biggrin

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I was a big MJ fan up until 1982-83, I knew from the first time I saw P in the LRC video that "there was something about this dude".....Then when PR dropped, it was over...I remember getting his entire back catalogue from For You thru Controversey on the same day and spent a whole summer listening/learning/being baptized into the purple world....

I get the marriage break up thing, my ex husband was a prince fan and I couldn't listen to a lot of music we had enjoyed together as it stirred up too much emotion. letting go and finding something else to listen to was part of moving on, but enough time has passed now I guess...
Now I wish I'd never stopped, when I was in the uk I could have gone to so many more concerts!
