What happened to the Purple Rain sequel?

Is this still on or did another shiny object distract him again?

I think Grasffiti Bridge was an attempt at a sort of quasi-sequel to PR. And, well, the less said about that the better.

I am not talking about Graffitti Bridge. I am talking about the movie that was announced about 2 years ago. The talk at the time was that Prince was very serious & it was a sure thing.

It’s probably been filmed, edited, color corrected, and locked away in the vault along with most of Prince’s movies.

Way back in the day I wrote a synopses of a script for a Purple Rain sequel that I thought would've been a good movie.

It took place after the Purple Rain movie and in the sequel he's blown up to stadium level success, but things are not all well. He's constantly battling with his girlfriend played by Paula Abdul (She'd just done Rush Rush and I thought it was THE Sh!t when it came out), a successful singer in her own right and he's slowly sinking into alcohol and drug abuse and a strong rivalry with another huge star that is out at the same time who Prince suspects of biting his style.

After Paula leaves him and after a difficult but successful stint in rehab he returns to an uncertain stage to try and win back the good graces of his fans. Of course he does and the movie ends just like Purple Rain did, with a mini-concert performance.

There's no TIME in the movie but there is a tearful, heartfelt call made to Appolonia, who's found love and happiness with another man.

Oh and Prince does all the music of course.

There was someone on the org (was it Soul?) who had their own concept of a sequel called "The Dawn"... (back in 1985 that was the rumoured title to the sequel)...but the concept sounded like it would have been a good flick and WAY better than "Graffiti Bridge".

I don't think it was ever 'announced'.

And I don't recall seeing any evidence to suggest this was anything more than unsubstantiated gossip.

Are you talking about that planned 3121 movie?

I remember several ideas that I came up with. Here's one lol Let's assume that GB never happened, making this the "real" sequel".It's a gritty, urban drama filled with music.

*Prince and Morris Day are now huge stars living in Los Angeles.

*They return back to Minneapolis for Billy's funeral.

*While there, they both discover that things are alot different.Gangs and crime have taken over their old neighborhood.Morris finds out that he now has a son that he didn't know about. The Kid comes in contact with an old girlfrfiend (who is now a schoolteacher in a poor,run-down school) and falls for her.

*First Avenue nightclub has been left to The Kid and Morris, but they can't decide what to do with it (at the end of the film,The Kid's girlfriend convinces him to turn it into a community center)

*Can they turn things around in their old town?

I don't know what you're talking about and you don't seem to have a source to show what you're even talking about. I've never heard Prince talk about a Purple Rain 2 or any movie for that matter. After GB was his 2nd failed movie it looks like he gave up acting all together. Hell he can't/won't even reunite with the Revolution and he won't let The Time use the name and I don't even know if he's on speaking terms with Appolonia or if she would even be interested so how is a sequel gon' happen.

I wish the "Camille" project materialized before GB. That film had a real "Fight Club" feel to it. The story was alot more interesting than the mumbo jumbo in GB.

The "Star Is Born" formula has been used a few times hasn't it? I believe even "Purple Rain" was compared to it. And "8 Mile".

In my version career jealousy with Paula Abduls character isn't the sourse of the tension, it's the rivalry with the other artist he feels is ripping him off. It's a fictional take on the Michael Jackson rivalry from back in the day. The career derailment due to drugs you can say is reminiscent of "The Rose" and "Lady Sings The Blues".

Hey I didn't say it would be original, all it needs is a killer soundtrack (hopefully a next step from Purple Rain) to sell it.

I have no interest in a new Prince movie (unless it's a documentary with someone who is NOT PRINCE in charge), but man, I'd love to go back in time and see a Purple Rain-ish movie made during the Dirty Mind era... can you imagine???

I like the idea of Paula Abdul being the co-star thumbs up!
