Prince - Spiritual Booms!

What's UP Fam!

smile

This video is in tribute and respect of the genius of Prince Rogers Nelson!! I wanted to speak about those songs that I consider a 'Spiritual Boom'. Songs that take you places, songs where you wonder how did he come up with that? Inspiring songs that are ethereal, examples of this include songs like: Power Fantastic, Into The Light/I will Rebirth Of The Flesh, Computer Blue, Hypno'Paradise, Welcome 2 The Dawn. These songs are very special in that Prince is the only one I can really see come out with this. PLEASE share with me some of the songs I failed to mention!

While Prince does not 'Count The Days' as he once did. His reasoning is that he was only born once, & therefore should not celebrate it continuously as this makes one older. He feels like time is just a trick, & that birthdays R essentially just 'Pagan'. Which I never understood the reason 2 call specific traditions/days/events as 'Pagan'.

ANYTHING could literally be pagan, excusing only certain events as pagan is just 'out there' 4 me. But to each is own, everyone is able 2 make up their mind on which days should be respected or not. smile

He even said "If it makes no mind of what color or holy day, why is this a game in which we play?" - Beautiful Strange

Nonetheless, PLEASE share with me some of your favorite songs whether it be 'Spiritual' or not? Maybe you like songs where he is talking about Head, or sister..lol. I'd just like to know what your interests are in respect to Prince!

Much love to you all and Peace & Be Wild! headbang

Why?

I like the thread title and it's a nice video. The guys knows his lyrics like the back of his hand. Kudos to him and of course Prince for all those songs. We should make a lyric thread of the deepest words in the Spiritual Boom tracks. Cool title. cool

Supa made a thread about Joy In Repetition long time ago that really opened my mind for this song. I always say I'm grateful for that thread, otherwise it might've taken me years to appreciate this masterpiece.

But I gotta say, it made MORE of an impact on me when I heard it as part of a segue with "The Ball" song from the original CB album.

I like your selections, but IMHO, wouldn't be complete without Days of Wild verse below:
Tennis shoes and caps, now that's phat
Up until the day another wanna laugh behind your back
Sayin' we all look the same
God bless America, home of the brave
I'd rather dress 2 make a woman stare
I'm puttin' on somethin' that another won't dare
It's a freezer burn compared 2 cool
If U still got loot, then who's the fool?
Everybody wanna take the stand
Mind your own m*********er, let a man be a man
I'ma tear s**t up y'all, that's my style
These are the days of wild - put'em up!

I never looked at Prince's tunes as spiritual, which is probably why I went off him in the late 90's and def the Naughties.

Yes, I realise that he has always spoken of God and the Afterlife etc, but for me it was always about the music and his attitude towards all things in life.

The guy quotes Computer Blue, "where is my love life".

The way I see it..... this isn't spiritual at all. Prince is just pissed, and angry with his missus.

I see Love, Anger, Dissapointment, Hope, Fun, Sex, and all other daily occurances in his songs, but not Spiritual. And if I do, i usually press >> or flick back to A-U-T-Omatic. wink

Hi EyeJester!

Again, your voice is easy to listen to. Good little tribute. You point out what a fantastic lyricist he can be. I know to the mega-fan who's heard everything, some songs can sound repetitive or derivative - how can it not? He's written so many songs!

But I recently read a rock star's memoir in which he writes about the mental toll it took on his band's lyricist to come up with new things for song upon song, album after album, and that some other songwriters told him it's OK, they've hit long doldrums in their lyric writing too. This one lyricist was in a breakdown in the studio, under pressure from the rest of the band, going "I don't have anything more to say! and I don't know how to say it anyway!" It just brought to light how difficult it can be to come up with words (preferably that fit with music!), and how we take it for granted that Prince seems to churn them out.

You pass by "When Doves Cry" because it's been discussed to death, but those lyrics are definitely quintessential Prince - how does he come up with it?

"Little Red Corvette" is also lyrically genius, and very poppy but actually sad underneath, a strange juxtaposition. Same with "I Could Never Take the Place.." and "Strange Relationship." All three of those are uptempo and about how you want to be together with someone, and yet you cannot, you are isolated from one another.

"Anna Stesia" speaks to that theme directly - about feeling alone, wanting to connect with and love someone, and then concluding with the idea that if get closer to your "higher self," you could learn to love the right way, and finally truly connect with another and not be alone. I guess this is a recurrent theme for him. "Holy River" is a concrete story based on this same idea.

I'd add "All This Love" to your list of Spiritual Boom too. And actually, it's a culmination of his idea of isolation and then true connection through reaching your higher self or spirituality. If his life is an open book through his songs, then I'd say he's had a difficult time feeling true love in his younger days and that he was troubled by it ("Papa" says "how come I don't love my woman" and in PR "don't ever get married" - I think he was troubled, even scared, of the idea of never truly loving anyone or being loved, never having a true connection and feeling isolated from others). And if "All This Love" is any indication, he is finally getting to a place spiritually in which he can be truly open and ready for love.

Anyway, nice discussion. Thanks for your thoughtful posts, Eye!

If you replaced the word spiritual as its connotations don't mix with you, but looked at it instead as 'a deeper look at the meaning of life' would you still flick?

This is what makes this thread so interesting. You and Mszadi get something out of that verse that I do see, feel or experience, which shows versality in P's music and the way it all effects us differently. The lyrics and words have a broad range of appeal.

In computer blue - where is my love-life. What a metaphor. As if your love-life is a ball that can bounce away and then the depersonalisation of the human body to 'there must be something wrong with the machinery.' I see the appeal there.

Sounds like you are mixiing up the term spriritual with religious. Prince has always touched base with spirituality in many of his songs, including those the OP mentioned, long before he became a JW. In his best songs, there is a fine tension between themes of the Sacred and Profane. Between Sprirituality and the Physical. In recent years, Prince has not had this tension in his music, although some of it is still good--it doesn't hold the driving force of the songs that dealt with these themes. One recent song, which is very spiritual, and I was privileged to see him perform live, is Future Soul Song. Much better than the "dogmatic persecution" he alludes to. lol

Didn't realise it was you Eyejester. I agree with you on almost all of them. Boom, I will/into the light, the Truth, the Word, Space, The love we make and many more. Even Beverley Park 77 without words to me is really like a revelation and awakening. Like a journey or trial, crescending in pressure until the light shines in and peace is restored, like a cascading waterfall. Love that one! Likes the 'peaks and valleys' he sings about in another song.

I'll listen to a few you mention that I haven't paid attention to yet. Nice thread.

I sooo can relate to your excitement when you talk about the music, it real makes me feel, when you talked about "the love we make", I'm not lying "sacred is the prayer that asks for nothing", the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, just as they do every time I hear that song or even think about it. Yes, you've just touched the surface and oh how i feel the same way, and just as you stated, One day Prince will get his recognition for all he's contributed to the music of our lives, the soundtrack of my life, I love you Prince, and I love you Eyejester for sharing such a sincere homage to Prince, and to answer your question......"who else can do that?", we both know the answer to that question!...

Thank you so much! This comment really makes me smile! I appreciate it sincerely! All love to Prince for making the music allowing us to go deeper in ourselves! I really believe Prince will get the recognition he deserves, it takes time but it won't take that long. Already people can see the genius and craftsmanship in him. On Prince's Boring/ restless/ typical performance he brings so much passion and detail he makes the others look lackluster. He's true to what he does, and it's always about the music with him!! Sure he puts on something another won't dare..but this guy will continue to take us in a soul ride!! Thanks for coming along, and much love to you! I appreciate all you have said! smile

Purple Rain is one of the songs that take me every time. The guitar solo says just as much as the lyrics! It's pretty awesome! I really recommend watching the 'Milan Performance in 2010'..It says so much! The song really does soar and manage to produce a caring for all of those lonely emotions one may have. smile

Thank you very much for your list! I really appreciate it! You are right in pointing out the songs that are popular yet very clever and amazing. 'When Doves Cry' always gets me every time! It's Poppy but still lays such a powerful point. You pointed out so many points! I really appreciate it!!! It's pretty amazing when you think about it!

It's interesting you mention 'All This Love'! That is is one of my favorite songs! "Time travel, moving faster than sound, secrets lost but now their found..Spiritual (Sexual) Healer lay your body down, your lips and your hips are round"!! I love it! Spiritual and sexual are equivalent in this sense to me. I love it though! LOL It's a boom for sure! I sure hope Prince is at a place where he is open for love ready to settle down. I think he is truly afraid of it, perhaps since what happen to Mani? But who knows! lol

Thanks so much for your information! Made me think about a lot!

i enjoyed your video, mainly cuz u have a really great smile biggrin

so prince has many many beautiful spirit charged songs, his amazing voice does help A LOT...

i have always loved to hear purple rain live, the obscurity of the lyrics can be whatever u want them to be! i love how the song soars, lifts the spirit & creates a thronging wave of joy & 2getherness! it's a spiritual anthem 4 defo!!

Thank you very much!! I really appreciate the compliment of my smile. smile

Purple Rain is one of the songs that take me every time. The guitar solo says just as much as the lyrics! It's pretty awesome! I really recommend watching the 'Milan Performance in 2010'..It says so much! The song really does soar and manage to produce a caring for all of those lonely emotions one may have. smile

you are welcome!..

i know there are some fans that claim to be sick to death of the song, but i have always enjoyed it because of the overwhelming sense of power it has on the crowd & then there are times, such as the milan performance when he takes it to another level & his guitar sounds like nothing of this earth!

it's interesting that u mention milan because i did actually attend that concert, i count myself extremely lucky to have witnessed the performance, it evoked incredible emotion.

another great experience of purple rain was at the werchter festival & while the performace wasn't extraordinary, it was a crazy spiritual experience, it was like even mother nature was showing her approval.

as prince launched in2 purple rain a thunderstorm took place, it was very dramatic & set to torrential rain, thunder & lightning lol
