I'm hoping the Prince in 20 years will have dropped this 'building a mystery' routine. He's far, far, faaaaarrrrrr overdue to drop it.
Seriously, the guy still, even after being as old as he is, gives completely shitty, utterly pointless, aloof interviews.
During a time when Dez, Lisa & Wendy, and others in the Prince camp are giving wonderful, candid (as much as they are allowed) interviews that show maturity and depth, Prince has remained stuck in first gear.
He's such an amazing performer, musician, and composer. It would be so much more satisfying if he'd just let his guard down and be himself. I think the world wouldn't judge him for that.

Prince should keep on playing his guitar at concerts as long as he can...
Maybe his studio albums aren't anymore what they used to be..
but LIVE on guitar he will rock even at the age 70. Prince 4Ever.

sure i would, that may b my only option as far as when ill be able 2 get enough spare money to go to one :p. Also on the comment about his interviews I don't think he fakes them I think that's just how he communicates thats sort of how I am too its hard to just be completly open to people like that. We all will be there until the wheels fall off.
Even the habitual complainers/naysayers. "Climb in my fur."

Hope he keeps performing. I've seen Paul live 2 months ago and it was simply incredible. He does 2 hours and 45 minutes show, every show!! RESPECT.
I wonder how long he manage to keep this thing up. but a lot of performers still perform. I've seen Bruce Springsteen last week too, and he also still has energy like a 25 year old! ( he does shows around 3-3,5 hours!) man, man. I really hope Prince will do the same. [Edited 6/1/12 14:09pm]

ehhh, but you hear stories about how as soon as the recording devices are off, Prince turns into a normal person. To me it looks like he's just very concerned about his image and doesn't want to say or do anything 'stupid' on record. I don't think it's 'fake', but it's not natural...
I agree with imago. My favourite version of prince is this guy:
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
i guess he is a true genius and will never be "normal" in interviews, i mean have you seen how he acts not just talks, have you seen how he dresses..etc etc. i wouldn't expect "normalcy" to come out of his mouth then

He'll keep performing while he can. And I'll keep seeing him while I can. Hopefully we'll both be around for another 20yrs.

How he acts, talks, dresses... it's all part of an image he creates. If being a weirdo causes some of his fans to think he's a 'true genius', that's fine with him. But it's a misconception that very smart and talented people are strange in that way. Tons of 'true geniuses' are perfectly capable of giving relaxed interviews.

Prince is one of the most skilled musicians out there. That aspect will never age.
What impresses me is how well the Prince "persona" has aged.
You think back to the early 80's and there is no way that that persona is going to translate to a a 50 year old man without it being a disrespectful farce. That said, Prince has evolved quite gracefully into a middle aged funksman of rock and roll.
His talent/focus is great enough to support/sustain/drive his image/persona. Unlike say, Elvis or Michael Jackson. "New Power slide...."

I will go and see him when he is 80 - music like his never dates and the skill he has will never date either, he does at least act his age & is as gracious as ever.
I will never forget his visit to Australia and hope he does not leave it so long to come back again.
Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Plenty of artists still perform at old age, more than who retire I would think. Clapton still does tours, Barry Manilow still sings well. The Stones still tour, The Who were performing until Townshend went deaf, James Brown toured into his 80's, Chuck Berry is still performing afaik etc.

Lets just hope Prince doesn't LOOK like Barry Manilow when gets older. Stay away from those cosmetic surgeons Prince. It'd break my heart to see you with those chipmunk cheeks. "Don't hate me cos I'm beautiful"

Wait, are you talking about this guy? [img:$uid]http://api.ning.com/files/cFOKr2HD1f*4cgPgxnA2aXsQQTBq5PRDY2uIcucr48B10fj07HWcHRRNA6xdhMh2Ys7PAEJmffe559OJouynAfF3N8SNxbyq/c2dee9bb59698fab2d18049930bbf16c.093d83486c12318f1c8b47ffc13b07dc.jpeg[/img:$uid]
Because it sounds like you're talking about this guy... [img:$uid]http://new.etonline.com/media/photo/2009/02/79062/400_prince_090220_rsullivan_73177029.jpg[/img:$uid]
One those images is promoted more than the other...

They are one and the same. He's got two sides...and (they R) both friends.
There are plenty of ugly candid pics of a young Prince
[img:$uid]http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss73/shawnsolo3000/PrinceIV.jpg[/img:$uid]
and smooth candid pics of an older Prince. So what?

i don't think it's smooth vs ugly... it's controlled image vs regular person. I honestly prefer the 'ugly candids', young and old, to the 'smooth' pics. The candids aren't ugly at all, but the posing looks kinda silly to me. But I guess I see why Prince promotes the 'smooth' look more... a lot of his fanbase are middle aged women who get hot when he undoes his shirt...
Anyway, to answer your question of "so what?", the point I'm making is that when you say Prince evolved gracefully into a middle aged funksman of rock n roll, that makes me think of the guy in the candid photo, the guy that you don't see too often, because I DON'T think that he's trying to project the 'middle aged' image. I agree that he could be the gracefully matured guy you're talking about, but it doesn't really come through to me in the image he promotes.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
What I am pointing out is that the two I posted were both candid. Of course a promo picture will be promoted more. The picture you posted was just an ugly face..not because of the wrinkles, but because it is just a damn awkward mid expression shot. Notice Prince isn't using the shirtless pics as promotion either.
Again, Prince has found a way for the Prince persona to age with him. The sword thing is funk. It's not a young vs old thing.
Every artist controls their image. Bruce Springsteen tries to convey this everyman/common guy image, but the reality is that his photoshoots are just as controlled and image concerned as Prince's. He's using pro lighting, pro photographers and photoshop. He just is going for blue collar, where Prince is going for glam slam. [Edited 6/2/12 12:20pm] "New Power slide...."

I saw someone mention Michael Jackson and Elvis and some could look at Prince and say he must really b tough to withstand and look as good as he does he seemingly doesn't age. However Michael and Elvis were right in the spotlight the focus as the most famous person in the world in their times and so its a little different. Prince has kind of been able to to shift between the shadows and reinvent himself several times. There are many musicians that have aged gracefully and lived very long lives like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Tony Bennett. This might be a positive of being underrated, in Prince's case VERY underrated. "Why can't I fly away in a special sky?
If I don't find my destiny soon I'll die in your arms under the cherry moon" "Pardon me 4 breathing, can we borrow some of your air? "

I agree. Both Michael Jackson and Elvis were eaten alive by being the most famous people of their time. Prince, has been able to survive this trap for many reasons.. "New Power slide...."

Ah, I misread.
i guess it's just personal perception, then... I think the sword picture is silly, and I think the photo i originally posted is cool, and not ugly or awkward. I see where you're coming from, though.
I know that if Prince projected a more 'real' image, it would be as real as Bruce Springsteen, but I think (I'm not 100% sure) I'd find that more appealing than his image now.

Just had this image of us at a Prince concert, stubling behind our purple painted wheeled strollers. And Bart van Hemelen waiving his clutches, shouting to his nurses that Prince is not as good as he was in the old days.
Citing a nurse the next day what she has to post on the org for us.
And yes, Prince will still be magnificant on his guitar.
99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I hear what you are saying too.
I know. I just think that Bruce's image is just as much a put on (or calculated) as Prince's.
To me, there is something very tongue in cheek and funny about Prince holding a sword and such. It is oh so very Prince. Silly? Yes. But still Prince. [Edited 6/2/12 21:58pm] "New Power slide...."
