Yes, I agree.

Everybody gets hurt during their 20's. Naturally youth things they will change the world and do a better job than previous generations did. That's normal. It's also normal to find out it doesn't work like that.

Some youngsters then adjust their views on human kind and how the world works. They understand it's not as simple as they thought when they were 20 and understand why previous generations also didn't manage to change the world in a day. These individuals are still able to stay emotionally involved in life.

Some people can't accept it works like that, stay dissapointed and as a reaction they retract themselves emotionally from that dissapointment. They adopt big ego's, depressions or compulsive tendencies to deal with their unresolved expectancies about life.

His lyrics and music of his young days are so fantastic because it's that youthful dream. The dissapointmed that change doesn't come quick might have dissapointed him so much, he retracted himself emotionally. I can imagine he felt he was 100% responsible for that and in order to protect that feeling of failure he adopted that narcisitic '90-s style. And as a reaction to that, he went to the other extremes of religion. Maybe he will manage to see al shades of grey in stead of the black and white view that drives him to these kind of extremes.

I don't know, I just hope he'll grow his confidence and dares to rely on himself. So, he doesn't find himself manipulated by people. People who like to make Prince dependant of themselves because it provides them with the easy life.

Pure speculation on his psyche, but I find it spot-on and incredibly insightful.

maybe nothing excites/inspires him anymore, so he chose to retire & not make a big fuss about it by involving the media... remember he's PRINCE, so press conferences are not his thing...

People with so much passion and genius don't retire, unless they get really sick! It's in their blood and they work for as long as they can! I'd b extremely surprised!

I remember about two months after 20Ten the "What's Next..." threads started up. lol

Well, that's exactly what happens if an album doesn't have any substance. You don't need a lot of attention span to get it.

The problem with Prince is: he does work a lot, but he doesn't work hard. Working hard means to question yourself and your creations, to strive for a piece of art better than anything you've done before. That's what Prince hasn't done for years. And you know what? I can understand that. Life is so much easier if you handle it this way. The only disadvantage is that there won't be any truly amazing results, just a work of affirmation.

That's an interesting concept of hard work and an even more interesting theory about his work. I can see evidence of it too. Of course, you can never know what's inside someone else's mind (even if they try to tell you) but there does appear from the outside to be a lack of questioning going on.

I feel that happens to MOST artists eventually, at one point or another.

Yes, Prince. If we got married that WOULD be cool.

If the Lotus Flow3r disc wasn't hard work, I'd be scared to listen to what hard work sounds like. His studio albums are fine as is. They would all be classics if he just released the awesome tracks, and put all the leftovers on outtake sets, but I can live with how he's done it in the studio.

Pardon my exaggeration..lol. But 20Ten is not at all as horrible as people make it. I do think it is some of the closest sound to anything done in the vein on 1999 in terms of the synths and guitar playing.

I like some of 20ten. I agree that a few songs are very solid.

I'm indifferent to some of 20ten.

I loathe some of 20ten. There's a couple stinkers on there.

That's how I feel about pretty much everything he's released since the late 80s, early 90s at the latest.

From album to album, I still dig the stuff that moves me A LOT. As much as any music I listen to. Those moments just aren't as frequent as they used to be. And the fact that the album wasn't even released in the States will ALWAYS leave a bad taste in my mouth overall.

Yep. Agree. And 'Everybody loves me' is my guilty pleasure.

In the States it was possible to order the newspaper right? So you could get the CD?

'Everybody Loves Me' is one of my least favorite Prince songs from a lyrical standpoint, EVER! lol But hey, we all have different opinions and Prince releases such a wide variety of music that there's a good chance everybody will like something on each album.

I don't want to start another fight about how and why Prince chooses to release his music the way he does these days (since Emancipation, basically). But if you consider the fact that he's an American artist who achieved his greatest fame and greatest sales here, along with many HUGE tours that earned him, quite literally, hundreds of millions of dollars (over the years) in the States, it doesn't sit well with me that he would purposely choose to not release an album here. It's the 21st century and he didn't make the album available to us locally in any way. Having to buy a newspaper from overseas, either from the paper directly or second hand... well.... it just doesn't sit well with me. That's just my opinion. There were plenty of people who found it perfectly normal. shrug I ain't one of 'em. lol

Yes, it has been a long wait 4 a new record; perhaps one of the longest. But do keep in mind that over these 2 years us fans have gotten a LOAD of kick ass bootlegs (1984 Birthday Show, Feline Rehearsal, The Dance Electric rehearsal clip, Dream Factory, The Parade Demos, etc. etc.)

That's what you thought of the project but that's just your opinion of it. Some people thought it was fantastic. The only fact is that none of us know what Prince thinks or feels when he's recording anything. I personally find it hard to believe he goes into a studio with the intention of being lazy. He obviously has a filter for songs he doesn't feel fit to release since there are hundreds of circulating bootlegs he obviously felt a need to shelve that cover a large chunk of his career. Stands to reason there have been hundreds more since then but just better security.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

We shouldn't assume that Prince will release another album...

It's unfortunate, especially since I've been more exited about Prince's releases since 2000 than I ever was in the '90s.

'The Rainbow Children'

'N.E.W.S.'

'Musicology'

'3121'

'Planet Earth'

'Lotusflow3r'

All fantastic albums

'MPLSound' and '20ten' were also slammin'.

He's either run out of distribution ideas, or has lost interest in sharing his new creations with a laregly unappreciative fan base.

Who knows... maybe all of this touring is creating enough revenue to fund his own distribution. Previously, he relied on others for distribution of his label. He could have a plan to devise a massive independant distribution.

Of course, there's always the argument of:

"Why doesn't he just create a website, and let folks order new albums?"

I would say that would limit the buyers to mainly just his fanbase.

Others may say:

"Why not just charge for a download, and therefore he would have no material costs?"

Personally, I prefer a physical format with artwork and credits... Vinyl or CD... and no, I don't want to make my own CD inserts.

I'd say he is disgruntled with both the state of the "single-minded" music trends - All based on singles not albums, and downloading mp3s via iTunes, combined with the constant negativity and bashing he gets from a lot of his fans.

?

How long have we been waiting for a new, GOOD, Prince album? Highly subjective of course, but when was the last time there was a Prince album that you could listen to all the way through without skipping any tracks? Lotusflow3r, but not the 2 jokes it came with, comes pretty close for me - but before that, I'd probably have to go back the better part of 20 years.

Mostly Prince, actually. Old stuff, the stuff I like from the more recent albums, out-takes, live shows, etc.., liberally sprinkled with various things from other bands.
