"High": Too Bad He Shelved This Album
Though not one of my favorite albums as a whole, I know that "Rainbow Children" is really popular here. That said it's a shame he didn't release the proposed High album as its predecessor; with proper promotion these two albums back-to-back may have done well for him (how many times have we said that about other projects). Oh well at least gave us the songs so I can't complain too much...

I thought he did via the club. I have those jams. I forget, were they released as singles during the years or all at once? Do you mean released via record stores etc? "Climb in my fur."

Just like Dream Factory, this gets as much play as any of his "official" albums. Solid songs and it has a good flow. I've always thought Supercute could've been a hit.

I remember discussion of this always used to exasperate the PP moderators on NPGMC forums.
They would re-iterate over and over that High was never an album or intended to be, while we all argued to the contrary. Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

agreed not a bad album at all, in the vien of Rave

High WAS intended as an album, Prince wanted to release it through the same label did put out the U Make My Sunshine single, only when that never took off and flopped he changed his mind. He wa unwilling to work with a major label so soon after Arista fucked up the promotion for Rave (or rather Prince messed everything up with the first single and the late video...?) so he decided to release the songs through his new website slowly.
Its ok, its nothing special, My Medallion has some good bass parts, When Will We B Paid is interesting. The real shit was on the NPG album 'Peace'

Eh, I'm definitely not (ahem) high on those tracks. For me most of the NPGMC material was Prince's nadir. So many of them seem like he really had no interest or passion in the music and was just going through the motions.

I agree its a very good album.
Most of it... if only one could delete these:
Golden Parashute, When Will We B Paid, Gamillah
I like the rest of the songs. Prince 4Ever.

But what did chebur say about it? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

at one of the npgmc soundchecks someons asked P about High album. P said something like "there never was a high album! the high album never existed!!" What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

High is a very good tune and could have been a hit methinks. My Medalion, Daisy Chain, When will we be paid had a certain 70s soul muscularity to them that I though would have been the begining of an interesting newish sound.
Overall it had the potential of being a decent cohesive set and would have prefered this to the TRC which turned me of Prince for a long while. [Edited 5/17/12 14:42pm]

Mr Hayes does keys on the title track. I know that for a fact.

lol. just goes to show how different people like different songs. personally, i think those 3 you mentioned are amongst the best on the album.
the only song i totally dislike is "high". also, "my medallion" is just silly, but since it's so obviously meant to be silly, it becomes good again. if that makes any sense.
as an album, with this tracklisting, it does seem to be a bit heavy on the slow grooves in the first part of the album. not sure if that flows really well. but the tracks are good.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I consider When I lay my hands on you one of his great songs and don't understand how little mention it has received.

meh.
All that High/Peace era stuff is OK, and definitely a step in the right direction after the plastic soullessness of most of NPS/Rave, but it's probably for the best that he shelved it and got it out through the music club.
As problematic as The Rainbow Children is, I'd rather have that as it seemed to re-ignite his creative spark. And if he'd put out the High/Peace stuff as a legit release, who knows if he'd have dug any deeper.

You look at that tracklist (which IIRC, there was never an official tracklist for this proposed album?) - there are some of the best songs on there from the era - there are also some of the worst.
Like jonylawson says, the title track is one of the worst things ever to be released by P.

I really like the title track. The ones I don't like much are, Golden Parachute, Gamillah and U Make My Sun Shine. RIP
