glad u had a nice time & managed to see the show. i did hear never take the place of your man.. it was spectaculartastic!! the guitar was really cool.. i'm sure the vibe was amazing but i seriously doubt that shelby made u more excited that u was already? does she really need to drum up excitement?. in my experience the crowds are already hyperpsyched!

Most of the diehards were of course at maximum hype already, but a lot of the people in the place were media types and socialites, there by invitation - many probably mainly to be seen (or just to be able to say they were there).
Granted, I'm not sure how they responded to it all (I kinda tuned out to them), but the energy did seem to lift as it all built up to what I'd call the core part of the aftershow.
The other problem was that there seemed to be a long time between when the band members first appeared to when things really kicked off, presumably due to sound hassles, so they needed to keep people entertained. DJ Rashida was great, of course, but we were naturally all glued to the stage once half the band was there and they sort of needed to do something.

i'm glad some genuine fans managed to get in ok, but as suspected sounds like there were a bunch of hipsters? it seems many fans didn't get a look in, u were very lucky!

Saw the one of Prince funking up that bass wi Flava Flav & I just can't handle how utterly cool our man is! It's a crime to be that sexy, dancing about playing that mega funky bass line. It's stirring up some crazy feelings in me here- am I standing over a puddle or what?!!! Thank God I wasnt there or I'd have needed a fire extinguisher to put me out! Lol! U just set me on fire! Damn Prince, u r my funky hot dream-come-true, made flesh!!

Sounded like a nice aftershow. Highlights noted--SOIMH, (?), ICNTTPOYM, Jam of the Year, $ and Mutiny. Brown Skin by Shelby J was on point...gotta give it up, she nailed that song. Seal was ok, don't mind him up for a song or two but I thought he was gone and then it sounded like he was back again (?). [Edited 5/13/12 20:54pm]

Great post! In the videos that surfaced I thought she did a great job in keeping the audience hyped and Seal in check/on task. From all accounts, this seems to be one of those times where "you just had to be there " to appreciate what was going down. So kudos to Shelby and her chants.

Meh. I'm not entirely convinced about the need for chants. Maybe she did keep Seal in check and spared us his rendition of Mountains. I get it if there were non-fans in the audience (Oh cruel fate!) who needed the energy boost. At the same time, even in the recordings, ICNTTPOYM was magical! And that's all Prince! I don't need those oh-so-subtle reminders before AND after--or worse, DURING--a song to "Keep my hands up" or that "It ain't over 'til the sun comes up!"
Prince may have finally come up with a way to discourage bootlegs.

Watched the fan YouTube clips of She's Always In My Hair into Dreamer, and then I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, last night. Awesome stuff and lovely guitar, very similar to the Celebration version of ICNTTPOYM (I thought that was Xenophobia 2002 rather than 2001?)
Australia is getting a treat or two... Just somewhere in the middle,

Shelby is the Tony M of this generation. I do not care if she can actually sing or not. She is so flipping annoying in concert and on record.

yeah 2002 not 2001...2002 was the GOOD one lol "Climb in my fur."

From the one little 2 min clip I've seen, can't make no judgements, except flava is more entertaining than Shelby.

Man, just saw Prince tearing up the Gibson (?) on ICNTTPOYM and SAIMH, especially shredding the hell outa those Hendrix chords... Seemed like it was all worth waiting for, for those who got to go to the aftershow, despite Shelby and Seal. I thought the outfit looked great! Very reminiscent of some of the stuff he was wearing around 94/95. But boy did Shelby get on my nerves. She basically ruined an emotional song like She´s Always In My Hair . And the "What? " "What?" didn´t really add anything to the song. And a woman singing that song? No thanks. I think Shelby is a very talented singer in her own right and I can´t understand why she gets such a prominent role in the NPG to the point that fans start to dislike her presence. Too bad for her because she really has talent. But her back up antics are too much for me. I felt the same way about Rosie, too. Now Bonnie...she was different...she added a lot without being too dominant. But, in the end it´s Prince who´s calling the shots and it is his decision. But yeah, the outfit looked cool.

Hmmm ok not really my cup of tea.
Best part was the bass in the beginning - doo....doo.....doo.... Cool percussive sounds too...but in heavy guitar parts I hear no beat I'm sure I'm just a beat and ballad freak.
Shelby does a good job as an MC. $ was not what I expected though, I suppose Prince needs to rest his voice. Slow version of Nttpoym is lovely. Love Seal's Kiss from a Rose but he doesn't seem to sing well live. I suppose everything is highly polished in the studio.
Still nice to have listened, thanks! U no who u r. I miss the acoustic sounds so far...where are they?

Militant said: Just listened to the whole show. HOLY SHIT. Did y'all hear him turn "I could never take the place of your man" into a slow, bluesy, mournful rock ballad? Absolutely fucking phenomenal.
Loved Flavor doing "911 Is A Joke" with the NPG too. He first petformed this arrangement of ICNTTOOYM 10 years ago at the Guitar driven show at the Celebration at Paiskey Oark. And it was awesome. If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

This slow bluesy version of Shes Always in My Hair is the same as the version he played at 2002 celebration
