do you have your copy?

what's the quality like? is it widescreen? 5.1? what sound options are there? (ie. DTS etc)

any extras etc?

and got a photo of the packaging, the disc, etc? (ie. one you took yourself of the real thing?)

cheers!

No extras, but the menu is different (ie. songs are available directly from the main menu, rather than a scene index).

There's some discussion of it in this thread (from when it first started appearing for preorder) - http://prince.org/msg/7/379175 - which also has some photos of the cover and one of the actual disc that I posted today.

HEY YO!

Sorry to say but the remaster is absolute rubbish.

I played the blu ray on my 1080p projector and the transfer looked like it was a VHS recording, the colours were out of wack and it was blury and not HI DEF at all it is a total disgrace. Also there is no menu that you can select audio channels and it looks like it is a quick job blu ray transfer with no proper menu instead as soon as you load it up it somes with a song list menu.

Before you guys say maybe its crap on your projector let me tell you this.

After SOTT i chucked in the Phil Collins Live at Montreux Blu Ray and the picture quality was superb even at 1080i infact the Bonus concert in the Phil Collins Montreux Blu Ray is shot at 570p or something like that and even that had better picture quality than SOTT.

Sorry guys dont waste your money.

Get proper Blu Ray concerts like Santana Live At Montreux, Yusuf Islam, Elton John, Phil Collins and Stevie Wonder.

I dont understand why Prince does not release proper 1080p concerts.

There should be no excuse in poor original quality of film. They have restored many old movies into wonderful blu rays so there is absolutley no excuse as to why Prince or the people who made SOTT Blu Ray couldnt have done a better transfer.

Even Prince's bootleg Montreux pro shot concerts have better quality than SOTT.

PLEASE NOT: This is in no way bashing the wonderful Prince concert film which is SOTT my comments are purely on the Blu Ray Transfer.

Cheers

I emailed them yesterday and they replied that since it's a special order from their distributor, they couldn't cancel my order. I should have just waited until some actual reviews were posted..

sorry to hear that... with me they said, because it was a special order that they didn't have in stock yet, that they would cancel the order, and they hadn't even charged me yet anyway.

Was it really too much trouble to use the existing thread instead of starting a new one? http://prince.org/msg/7/379175

Quite frankly I blame the mods:

- didn't make the original thread a front-page item

- didn't make it a sticky

- didn't improve the thread's title

.

Just watched it yesterday. This is the best I've seen & heard it. The worse part is U Got the Look which is no better than a video quality, strange.

The sound is very midrange but bass is good, only have stereo speakers.

I think ther've done the best they can with a 25 year old film that was never of a high quality, quite soft focus, but its awesome to watch in wide screen & see more detail than ever before, no comparison to my german 4.3 dvd.

Don't know how this compares to the DVD remaster, probbably not much differance.

Worth buying, at least we get one prince concert on blu-ray!

I saw SOTT twice in the cinema, and it was in focus (no diffusion over the lens, but certainly there was smoke all over the set), grainy high speed film stock, higher resolution than HD 35mm film. The only parts of poor quality was the music video stuck in the middle, and a few shots that remained from the actual concert footage shot in Europe.

The blu-ray of SOTT should look sharp and preserve the film grain if it's a good master, and the colors should be precise. It should be similar to the Purple Rain blu-ray - which still does not match how a pristine 35mm print of Purple Rain looks (I saw one projected in the theater about 5 years ago and was really looking at the opening hard to compare to the DVD at home)!

The DVD of SOTT (the professional one) is pro looking/sounding and great. The German DVD you have must be bootleg quality (homemade unprofessional standards), because no professional DVD ever came out of SOTT in 4:3.

PS: Even films shot in the 30's are sharp and potentially better than consumer HD. Like Wizard of Oz or Gone With the Wind. It's misinformation to believe that a movie from 10 to 80 years ago has to be of soft focus or of lower quality. Just watch a well made blu-ray of an old movie like "African Queen" to see how it can look extremely good.

But the best way to tell the quality of this new SOTT blu-ray is to rip a few shots from it at full 1080p. It would be easy to compare to a full quality rip of the same shots from the pro DVD.

Which DVD? The DVD I have is completely professional and legit. It's definitely not from the VHS, which I have as well. It looks and sounds great and is true 720 x 480 image. It was probably made of the same HD master that was broadcast on Encore HD around the same time it appeared on the Canadian Market. It then got released in the UK in newspapers.

The Brazilian one (and it sounds like the German one) is bootleg and homemade.

If you put a VHS to DVD , that's bootleg! No professional company would do that. I have the Brazilian DVD, it's bootleg from the artwork and menu down to the picture quality. Hate it!

You sshould get the UK or Canadian DVD, it's worth it. it's a real DVD.

oh shit, the Brazilian one has now stolen the official packaging for this ad:

I have the Brazilian one before they stole the artwork, they originally used a 1999 era photo. If I remember correctly. They also advertise a DTS track.

Yes the Bluray is quite grainy especially in the dark parts & the parts that must be from the original fotage. The U Got The Look video is real bad, sounds like it was always this way.

Looks great on my 40 inch Samsung LCD(I've callibrated my screen), much more detail on faces I hadn't seen before, and Prince's voice does'nt sound sped up anymore.

The colour is a bit much even on my reduced setting, I would have to take it down alot for the costumes to be peach instead of red/orange.

How were the cinema colours for those who have seen the movie?

I bet if you order that first one you'd get the same Brazilian one with the 1999 artwork. It's likely that Amazon has the wrong picture for the described release, wouldn't be the first time.

Co-Sign on THE REAL ONE! The BEST DVD release of SOTT!!

Well I got my copy today and I was expecting to be disappointed but I wasn't. Let's just say it is sharper then the DVD but not by much. Like a previous poster said, it's very grainy looking. It's a decnt transfer, but could it have been better? Probably. And I just gotta say this.. Sheila E. in HD ..oh my.. eek

I watched it finally.

I would say its hit or miss.

As soon as I put it on I noticed the shadow of the camera crane panning in on Prince! Never noticed that before.. Pretty bad actually! The lighting guy should have not let that happen. Really takes away...

Anyway, I see what you are saying about the graininess. It would say its hit and miss, some scenes are really grainy. Like really grainy like U Got the Look. Others look pretty good and I can definitely see alot more detail than I have ever seen before, it really shows up when you see close ups on Cat or Prince and details in the background as well, I can see much more there.

It just seems like a really lazy transfer without much time spent on cleaning it up. They could have remastered it and cleaned it up quite easily frame by frame and removed all the grain from the scenes, especially bad with lots of dry ice smoke too.

Having said that, I am happy with it. More reason than ever we need an anniversary edition! 25 years? Or do we have to wait for 30... It would have been nice to see some extras of course.

I haven't had a chance to give the True HD mix a try yet as my surround system is out of operation right now.

Considering the age of it, they really shouldn't have released this without a clean up. I would give it a 6/10 but prefer to have it with the grain for the better resolution.

Its the best video record we have from that amazing time period.

not all blurays are cleaned up like that though as it costs a lot of money to do it. so thats why you get good and bad bluray transfers. for classic movies or discs they think will sell a lot they will usually put in the effort, but for something like this that's got a smaller potential market, i can understand why they won't bother
