I never said y'all were lying about anything. As for sitting next to someone who is tired of hearing the hits I'd have to wait for them to stop screaming and cheering to ask them. Also if it was easy for any of us to pass over what we don't like and not comment upon it then you'd have stopped following the W2A shows back in February of 2011. Yet you've posted on almost all of the shows threads in regards to what you don't like about the setlists(which is your right) and you're still here a year and a half later with the same gripes. The interviewer asked about the setlists(which y'all have wanted to know about for some time ow) and now that question has been officially asked and answered by Prince himself no less. Now if you don't like the answer(his answer) then maybe you should be the one to skip over it! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

One of the best interviews I saw in the last years. Prince has humour, isnt repeating the same stuff and gave clear answers to the questions.

Some people here are complaining about ITunes issue. Well, Prince, from the artist point of view, creates an album to be heard as an experience. We can argue that some albums arent cohesive, others have few great songs, but he had a reason to put them together.

About the setlist...I always thought that hits are important to non-hardcore fans, but I miss new songs. If you go to a Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert, for example, you will hear at least 4 songs of their new album. It rarely happened on Prince´s last tours.

Given the quality of his more recent albums, most of Lotusflow3r notwithstanding, I'd say that's probably a good thing overall. Tomorrow is the big day. People are going to reserve their bitching over setlists once it comes out in a future thread.
This thread will no longer exist. Truth is, Prince doesn't give a fuck what Madonna, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc, setlists are. He's making that $$$$ is what matters when he plays those hits. I hope Australians enjoy the show FOR the performance unlike the ungrateful folk here. I know you won't care about a lousy setlist because you're greatful he's took the time to perform in your country. Have a wonderful time! [Edited 5/10/12 14:04pm]

I just hope he's still doing the Andy McKee set that was talked about last week. Sounds incredible.

Prince does what he wants. I only mentioned RHCP because it´s an 80s band full of hits and they are still promoting new albums on their concerts.
Like I said before, I am not against hits, but Prince doesnt seem to enjoy promoting his new stuff even to non fans (maybe he doesnt believe in his new stuff much?). I am glad he still plays some B-sides and does lots of guitar stuff, some jamming, has some surprise guests, etc.

A 360 deal is when record companies get a percentage of all of a band's/artist's income. The contracts don't just cover music sales (CDs/downloads/albums, etc), they also include publishing (songwriter royalties from sales and airplay), merchandising (t-shirts, posters, etc), touring (ticket sales), and endorsements.

That was easily his best email interview I've ever read. Prince clearly was in a good mood in response...and really made me laugh out loud! By the way, anyone who tries to read too far into his answers(like he's 'dissing Robin Thicke'...the 2000's clone of Rick Astley), or thinks he didn't take the ?'s seriously needs to get their head examined. He is clearly making puns about issues that are important to him. I couldn't agree more regarding iTunes, compression, and the process of buying singles is the worst thing to happen to music in the last 30 yrs...awful!! But his response was tongue-in-cheek, rather than telling us exactly how he felt. And he could have easily chosen to rip Britney Spears for lip syncing, but that's too easy a target. It's an industry-wide scheme that's been abused since the late 80's. And all I can I add is...thanks for the laughs P!!

I missed your reply. Shout out to Honestman and others with level-headed rationality. Firstly, how do you know that of 12.000.00 who went to a show, what % did/didn't get what they wanted to hear? Have you spoken to them all?
i think it's extremely misleadling to say Bart's 'truth' because Bart and a handful of people does not constitute truth. It is a point of view. Why people jump on Bart is because he is seemingly incapable of putting forward opinions and responding to others respectfully. Bart comes across as educated. Knowledge is power but integrity counts too and when someone's 'knowledge' is used as a way to be abusive to other points of view then it loses value.
Subjective opinions about what should be put in Prince's setlists are many. I am quite sure Prince knows about the criticism of his later work from his hard core fan base but I am sure statistically at concerts the % of hard core fans is minimal compared to casual fans. I consider myself an enthusiastic fan. I have loads of Prince music. But I do not know what album Adore is on. Quite honestly, there are other important things in my life that take priority. All I want is to enjoy the music. I don't really care what year, what album whatever it comes from. It's about the music.
Prince plays genres. Rock, funk, pop, jazz, blues. My likes in the first genre are minimal. So when he plays uh...'days of wild' stratus (hard version) shsss or to me 'weird stuff like that' I don't feel part of the concert. I want to be there (and I think many others) to enjoy singing and dancing to my favourite songs (hits) PR included, along with the artist who made them, live with everyone else. The obsessed fans who know all the ins and outs of Prince are quite narcisstic in their demands I think. Since when was the concert all about them?
I think Prince does aftershoes to play the more obscure stuff to cater to that category. I didn't make Melkweg in A'dam last year, but if I had (from what I've seen in footage) I might have been disappointed. I would have wanted soft, acoustic, well know stuff and nothing rocky. I have a broad range of taste in music, I am defintiely not stuck in the 80s. Go and listen to Igor - Boomerang to see what hard stuff I like. But at a Prince concert I definitely want the well known stuff.Bonding with fans requires familiarity. He said in the interview 'he plays it by ear' ie. how the crowd responds. Only professionals can do that. Some people on here make Prince out to be an idiot which is so far from the truth.
I agree he could throw in more Lotus, 3121 and ONA but I think he does and the setlists do change. If Prince had fewer hits he'd be forced to play more 'new' stuff. The point is, screaming wild random thoughts about what Prince should play and comparing it to others is futile. His benchmark is the 80s and PR. Just as MJ's thriller. It's very hard to surpass the greatest work you've done and remember, first impressions count. PR, kiss, etc are signatures of Prince. We're just lucky that he's continued to pump out great music after that to fit all tastes. Note, 'all' not my tastes alone.
On a final note. have you ever tried to keep 12.000.00 people happy? Even in a group of 8 there will be two who feel their needs weren't entirely met. I think it's time the org naysayers stopping looking at their own selfish needs and started looking at the big picture. The world is so much bigger than just self.
Some might jump in here and yell 'oh but Prince is all about himself! so I'll say what I like.' And to them, firstly, if that's what you think it doesn't mean you have to follow because otherwise what do you have to complain about it you replicate the same 'alledged selfishness?' Secondly, think about educators who stand in front of class of 20-30 students daily and cannot cater to all needs and desires, social and educational. Have respect for the people in this world who share their talents with you, their client base is huge and pleasing everyone is mission impossible. It would drive someone off the edge.
Discuss and share likes & dislikes sure but stop critisizing Prince's every move. Look at what we have, not what we don't have. He's still here and we're enjoying concert footage even if we're not in the same country. (I do wish the PR acoustic intro would show up) though....
Now on with the show, coz I find the setlists interesting. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

it's still a truth no matter how many people in a arena are in. or if more inclined it's a "opinion" at best. having a balance is key to his performances now. i still belive if he did a show like lovesexy and the act 1 tour of new and old would be a great experience for all attending. my own personal tastes lean 2 funk and dance music tho i love the shredding of guitar as well. so that being said i see both sides of the coin when it comes 2 the hardcore and casual fan, and i chuckle as i write this remembering being at the palladium in nyc in 94 after witnessing tearing down the house but one female fan next 2 me was upset that he didn't do LRC. Now the tide has changed where the hardcores are begging for DOW and were getting take me with u instead. man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Well, it's save. This mode prevents misunderstandings or any creative interpretations of what is said.
I really like this e-mail interview. The interviewer can and needs to really think about the questions he/she poses. They can't rely on a conversation that can develop during the interview.
Another good thing is that the bullshit questions get edited and P can copy paste his answers to the standard questions. Saves him (and his staff) time.
On the other hand, due to the lack of back and forth interaction, there will not be spontanuous moments nor follow up questions.
I just hope P will only take time to answer the questions when he's in a good mood. I love his wit.
And he does need the media attention as PR. He sure is a master in creating/ maintaining his mysterious super star image.

Exactly! the misunderstood thing about him is he is cold. But Prince has a very funny sense of humor. It will be lost with the email thing now. Even though I'm in the States, I just like to say the interview went smoothly. Prince answer the question nicely and truthfully, IMO. Just wished I could had been able to attend the concerts. Since, I live in California it was impossible, but my friend that live there gave me all the details she could remember. Also, can't wait to hear about his last concerrt tonight, she will be attending that one also.
Hope, that he does a concert in Cali.
