'Digital Garden' Appreciation

The slow intro to this song kills me, so intriguing .. I love the house-style beat & atmosphere it gives off, his gorgeous falsetto is such a contrast yet brings everything together nod The guitar solo fading out at the end is pretty great, too.

I only wish it was way way longer & that he had (surprised he hasn't already with The Work Pt. 1) performed it live! I'm interested in how it'd be reworked, especially with that speech at the end lol

I think it's one of my favorite Prince tracks, and also unlike any other he ever put out. The most prog rock form him yet. The opening you describe always reminded me of The Police's "Walking in Your Footsteps"

the first half always reminds me of a slowed down "talk talk" song.

but in a good way. i totally love this song, it's one of those unique

ones in his catalogue. great sounds, great vocals.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Excellent track! Listening to it now, gives me chills! What a masterpiece!

I love when Prince does material like this; only he could come up with things like this. It just takes me places. I love how it falls into 'The Work. Pt.1'

It's groovy and a sexy musical masterpiece!

I like it but this is one of the few songs where I have NO IDEA what he´s singing about, even though I do understand every single word in the lyrics.

WTF? What is the Digital Garden? Who built it? Why? And what will the Rainbow Children feel very soon? What´s the love ( like a rose in bloom) that he´s talking about? His love for Manuela? What was the resistor´s dream?

Questions, questions, questions...

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Wonderfully trippy, perfectly creative and well-produced song.

I love how he plays around with the reverb on the vocals - ranging from full on reverb to completely dry and "close" sounding. Very good. You can feel he spent time on this song (and whole album actually, and that's why I love it)!

I like the melody and the experimental nature of the song, but:

- the percussion drum samples sound way too sterile

- the transition to the heavy guitar stuff is a little bit uncreative and doesn't flow well ("shhhah...")

The song, the site, the gardener - they're all good smile

Which is sort of ironic, given the message I gather he was trying to portray concerning the "digital garden", which was not a particuarly positive one...

Rainbow Children is my favorite 2000s album of his (even though I could do without the Darth Vader interludes).

Namely, "Digital Garden" is definitely one of my favs. That first half puts me on a Carribean island psychologically, and musically it puts me in the mind of a slightly better "And God Created Woman".

Like someone else had mentioned, I totally wish the song was longer, maybe five to six minutes. I do have to say I am a rather big fan of the heavy transition into the distorted guitar riffing. This song works so well for me.

In relation to the statement that he's making about the Internet, the musical transition makes perfect sense.
The thing is, for me, the 1st half sounds like Primce has been listening to Masters At Work, and I really love that and wish that had gone on a bit longer.

I might get shot for saying this, but when it comes to songs where he switches tack, I prefer Love 2 The 9s...

Agreed sir. We might be in the minority but I love the segways in this tune as well as the one in "The Continental".

The intro and verses are the EXACT same chord progression and MOOD as "Take These Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister.

Listen to "Take These Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister. Now enjoy hearing "Take These Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister everytime you listen to Digital Garden. Same EXACT chords and MOOD except one was a hit. You're welcome.
