Rank and rate the songs on 1999

Since these rank and rate threads are all the rage I may slip in one. How about 1999, the first real classic album (Some may say Dirty Mind was too). What are your favourites and least favourites. Mine are

1. Little Red Corvette 10/10, Despite the fact it was a massive hot, it was also a brilliantly written and funky little pop song. The lyrics were great too. Unlike the Purple Rain hits, I can never get sick of this

2. 1999 10, the ultimate party anthem, again it's it sheer resistance to date in any way.

3. International Lover 10, Absolute soft porn, using the air travel as coitus metaphor, just brilliance and raunch in every way.

4. Lets Pretend were married 10, More brilliance, driving pop and again raunchy but catchy lyrics make it his best, it has some of the lust of his Dirty Mind stuff, but also has the panache of his later 80s sex ballads like When 2 R in love and Slow Love.

5. DMSR 10, More brilliant party funk and roll, this is a pop/rock/funk chanting breeze, supremely great party mucis.

6. Delirious 9, More accessible and catchy pop, he keeps its cute and again like Corvette the joyous pop chorus and stop start keyboarding, all reasons why it too became a big hit for him.

7. Something in water 9, Good but not as great as the others

8. Free, 9 Alot of people don't like it I do, catchy chorus and good piano bits, like the message too.

9. Automatic 8, All right at start but goes on too long, the bit about torture is funny though

10. All the Critics 8, the stuff about him definetly masturbating is funny

11. Lady Cab driver, 6 I don't like it, its crude and borders on the rapine.

So what r yours?

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Some of the live versions are marginally better but "Free" has always been a bit of a stinker.

Eh, what do I know? I love "Lady Cab Driver" and "International Lover" and they are often cited as being two of the weaker tracks on the album.

Anyone who feels LCB is a weak track does not understand Prince music, has no sense, and has no soul.

Yes. He went high rent with the slow jam but it was still raw.

I always told myself to believe that this is a fantastic album, but I have trouble listening to it these days without being bored out of my skull.

There are some nifty live versions though........I suppose.

Happy to give everything on that album a 10...

Except "Free", maybe a solid 8...

Probably my favourite album of all time by any artist.

I think because it seems like an 'easy' song amidst all the rock synth fried groove of the rest of the record and I've also read in the past that the lyrics seem 'simple' making the song seem like a nursery rhyme etc. Be that as it may, the coda is a nice powerful part 2 addition with impassioned singing and passionate guitar runs imo.

It's still a 10.

If Moonbeam Levels was on 1999, there would bea lot of folks who would hate it.
