I'd go with that. No avenues or schools named after him, as far as I know. Back in the 90s when they were doing the free (or minimal charge) shows at Paisley Park, they could barely get a full crowd. KMOJ is the only radio station that I know that plays him regularly. He skipped Minneapolis during the Act I tour in 1993, because he felt Minneapolis didn't appreciate him enough. I still think he has/had a pretty good following. He sold out 3 shows for the Musicology Tour in St. Paul in 2004. Hard to say now, since he hasn't been doing much here.

Hope more ppl from "Minnie" will voice there thoughts/stories. Kinda think this is intresting. Although when I went there for a visit there wasnt any large Prince appreciation I could see/tell by.

& someone once mentioned he can comfortably walk around there. Dont know if thats all true.

Prince is very respected and loved here, but not treated like a typical celebrity or worshipped.

Meaning, people see him out and about and kinda let him be. His shows always sell out and he has to book multiple nights when performing at our sports arenas. If he plays at a smaller club tickets re harder to come by. He played at 1st Ave in '07 and it was THE event/news story of the weekend. I spent damn near 8 hours in a line that winded trhough the blocks of downtown MPLS.

Bottom line: the city loves him, but being low key MPLS, we don't have giant statues in his honor or anything. Um, the key to the city is shaped like his symbol. No joke.

It's my understanding that that particular symbol-shaped version of the key to the city was designed specifically to be presented to First Avenue (obvious as to why/the connection between Prince and that venue) and the official 'key to the city' of Minneapolis is NOT a big purple gaudy symbol-shaped key.

To be fair, have you ever seen a key to a city that wasn't big and gaudy?

Some keys ARE rather big and gaudy, no doubt...but go to Google images and type in "key to the city". Many photos of relatively small, quite elegant keys to the city pictured there, also it seems that often the keys are presented mounted on a plaque.

Examples:

[img:$uid]http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim//2009/11/30/1130_eve_hartman_480x360.jpg[/img:$uid]

I'm going to continue searching to be sure, but again - I'm pretty confident that the official key to the city for Mpls isn't purple or symbol shaped; that one given to First Ave was specially designed FOR First Avenue.

Isn't there a statue of Mary Tyler Moore there? I could just see a statue of Prince next to hers making her look like a big tall amazon Wonder Woman. lol

Skywalker pretty much summed it up. I'll add a couple of things.

After you spend enough time being a Prince fan and living in Minneapolis (Brrr...) you meet people who always seem to have a Prince story of some sort, some of the stories are true and some of them are not.

"I saw Prince at the grocery store" (not likely) or "Prince stood next to me at Bunker's last Monday night, you should have been there" (very likely). "My friend dated Prince back in the 80's" (could be likely). "Last weekend they closed the Chanhassen Arboretum so that Prince could have a photo shoot of him and his purple Dodge Prowler with the fall colors of the leaves" (true, Steven Parke's pictures are beautiful). "Mayte bought a hot tub from my Dad's store last week" (true, I saw the check from PRN Productions). "My friend was Prince's personal assistant for a while during the era of the unreleased "Celebration" Kevin Smith directed documentary" (true, if you've ever seen "An Evening with Kevin Smith" you know what I'm talking about. Kevin mentions the PA and her name.) Other stories are from those who have been involved in Prince projects like the "Ryde Devine" concert filming or the "Loose" video filming and how long they had to sit around and do nothing in between shots. Or "my uncle used to work for Ricky Peterson and musically transcribe Prince's newly recorded music from last night's midnight recording session at Paisley Park" (could be true).

Or sometimes if you wait long enough you get your own Prince story, "Mayte came in to the sports store I worked at and bought a pair of purple goggles and Vikings jacket that Prince wore in the "Rock n' Roll is Alive and it Lives in Minneapolis" video (true, I was there and saw it).

And another point to mention is how MPLS musicians feel about Prince. Some local MPLS musicians either do or don't like Prince personally but always respect him for his accomplishments and music ability and contributions. There are a lot of local shows I've been to where the musician will be up on stage and bad mouth Prince for screwing them over on a gig, job or recording session but yet cover his song in their gig and be truly happy to perform the cover because they love the song so much.

Just thought I'd add my two cents to the topic, take it or leave it.

Today he might have a problem filling Paisley but back in the 90's almost all those shows were full, and I was there for 90% of them, starting in 1992. And going out to Chanhassen from the downtown clubs wasn't easy. Between '92 and '96 - between Paisley Park and Glam Slam - I saw him easily over 30 times. And every show was brilliant. That said, there are no schools or avenues named after him - but that normally happens after someone passes away. Kirby Puckett, Hubert H Humphrey, Paul Wellstone, etc.

Mpls has mostly been accepting of Prince - while being a bit estranged at times. I guess you could say it's a love/hate/indifferent relationship. Most ppl I know have heard a lot of his music, some fans, most not, but they all respect his talent. But my favorite part is the number of people who went to "high school with him" and "used to be good friends". Really? Cuz you know he loved high school and was huge 'people person' back then. eek

I think it's great he's come back to MPLS, but he's been way too quiet. The last Paisley show was in 2009 and - to my knowledge - hasn't played since. I'm not holding my breath for the Paisley 90's but I hope he plays more than one show every 3 years. The last concert was a $40 ticket benefit and winter coat donation. It felt good to help out and see a great show in the process.

Anyone remember the Prince: A Celebration(s)? Minneapolis was full on about Prince 24/7 during those long weekend runs. No matter what you hear, people always pack Paisley Park to the brim when word gets out Prince is doing a show.

I went to all the shows too, agree that they were brilliant. I guess I just don't remember the soundstage area being full for the later shows (95-96). I probably know you! I remember doing a 360 on highway 5 in a snowstorm coming from Glam Slam to Paisley Park.

Has Prince ever given an autograph to one of you Minnie orgers way back in the day when he actually gave autographs-I'd love to hear about it popcorn

I never asked for one. I think it was kind of an unwritten rule of one of the things not to do if you wanted to be on the inside, if you know what I mean. You kind of had to act like you weren't that impressed by seeing him face to face, otherwise if you freaked out and made an ass of yourself you'd be banished. I'm speaking of the days that I was around hardcore, from about late 1991 to late 1996.

I was always amazed at the people who didn't get that. Prince had 2 reserved tables at Glam Slam and most people would just get it that you don't go up to his table, but then there were the people who would attempt to go right up to his table (sometimes with camera in hand) and needless to say they were swept right out the door. Then there were the people who would hang out at the entrance of Paisley Park all while the party was going on, they must have done something crazy!
