why not release remasters of the warner editions doubled with Prince's remasters ( if u remember he rerecorded his entire catalogue years ago) ???

this way fans win, warners cant bitch and Prince makes his share also...

That wouldn't leave much room for outtakes/b-sides.

I'd like to see Prince emulate the recent reissues by the Smashing Pumpkins. The original album on one disc, another disc of outtakes and b-sides and a live concert dvd. You get all that for around twenty-five bucks. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Weren't the SHM CDs enough? I just don't see us getting remasters from either Warners or Prince anytime soon. If Prince were to do his own remasters, they would be compressed to death and full of edits. We would bitchin' up a storm. I am satisfied with the SHM CDs that were released a couple of years back. They were a significant improvement in sound over the originals, but some of the originals were pretty good as well. Get some quality headphones and use the volume knob. lol

Well, I don't think it is just better sounding versions of the albums we already have that people are looking for (although that is part of it). The real draw of remasters for hardcore fans would be outtakes. I'm also guessing that there are versions of most, if not all, of the protege albums that feature Prince's vocals. It would be great to have those officially released.

If that is the case, then the conversation should be about a vaults box set, but I don't even see that happening anytime soon. I too, will be looking forward to a 1977-1995 box set of outtakes and alternate cuts, but I really don't see all of this talk about re-releases and reissuing campaigns happening right now. God forbids if Prince passes away, Warners will not be reissuing or re-releasing 60% of the Prince canon (including protege releases) because the masses is where it is to the powers that be at Warners. It is the politics of the record business. I can see them putting out various outtake releases in the scale of 1999's The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale, though.

I tend to agree. Remasters are pretty overated imo.

I have an ear for music, and the difference between an original and a remaster is very limited, especially when you're listening to it around the house, or in the car.

Not everyone gets the chance to sit down in a quiet room with headphones, listening out for an extra strum or tap.

I'd rather hear new out-takes or demos.

The build up to a final recording is always fascinating, and more rewarding. IMO.

I second that. Remasters are seriously on the overrated side because engineers always find a way to screw alot of them up (based on sound and the archives). Record labels aren't as wise either because they miss the boat on what hardcore fans really want.

I'm not sure I'd buy remasters. I still have all my original vinyl - and it sounds as great as it ever did. Do I really need another set of CDs?

If you have an ear for music, are you going to say that the cds of SOTT and The Black Album have rich bass that has a crunch and makes you feel the music? Nearly all of Prince's releases before 1995 have almost no bass at all. The vinyl sounds better, but a remastered cd would be the best possible option. We all know that it's probably not going to happen. Prince is Prince, and common sense is not always what we get with Prince.

I think it would be interesting if Prince's material was reissued in a similar way to how many jazz artists' music is reissued. Take a certain chunk of his career and reissue every song in chronological order in box sets. So, as an example, the first box set could be 1978-1983 and contain every fully produced song that he recorded during those years in chronological order. It might get a bit repetitive hearing some alternate takes over and over again but I think it would be great to get a chance to hear everything in order.

Realistically I don't know if the market for such a release exists as these would be massive box sets but I can dream.

I just don't understand this constant banging on about remasters. What is the matter with some people? You're pratcically screaming out ...

"Hey! I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket. Please sell me something I already have, but wrap it up in a bit of glitter, add a couple of unrelased (for good reason) studio demos and charge me a fortune. I love to see a good horse flogged!"

Remasters are just record companies way of maxmising profits on old albums. Half the time people just end up bitching and moaning that they don't sound as good as the originals anyway.

Give me some new material, or a collection of unheard tracks from the vault, over a re-release of an old album any day of the week.

I think he should do some shows where he plays the whole of his albums all the way through. Every song. Pro-shoot it and release that with the CD, and bleed them out over time, starting with second tier (to the general public) albums bundled together like Parade and Around the World in a day and releasing Sign of the Times and Purple Rain with their movies, the live performance (preferrably with a band reunion) and a remastered or original CD.

Like that's ever gonna happen but.

In a perfect world I would wholeheartedly agree that a box set containing nothing but previously unreleased music is the way to go but the reality is that it is more likely that we will receive outtakes bundled together with the original albums.

As I pointed out with the Smashing Pumpkins reissues that seems a great way for Prince to do it. 2 cd's and a dvd at a reasonable price.

Why would "the reality" suggest that he's more liely to release remasters with a couple of extra tracks rather than a whole CD of unreleased tracks?

I'd say the opposite is true

Is he more likely to work with Warners on remasters of his old albums with extra material or is he more likely to release something like Crystal Ball?

I think (and hope) he's more likely to release new material or maybe put together an album of unheard stuff from the vault.

Whatever ... I hope there's something new soon.

I'm not talking about remasters with one or two outtakes tacked on. I'm talking about 2 cd sets where you get at least a whole second disc of outtakes plus a dvd containing a full concert.

Many artists reissue their back-catalogue with extra tracks. It is a very common practice.

Prince did release an outtakes collection before (Crystal Ball) but that was more of a clearinghouse for recent material that he was unable to release (most of the material was recorded circa 1993-1996). He has had roughly fifteen years to release a sequel, if he was going to do so wouldn't he have done it by now? I'm sure that you are familiar with the 35 year law that gives artists ownership of their masters? In 2013 Prince will start getting his masters back so he will not need to release remasters through WB. He will need a hook to give fans a reason to rebuy the old albums, outtakes are that hook.

Now, that seems like a logical argument but we are talking about Prince here, he does not often walk hand in hand with logic. wink

By the time Prince gets the rights back to his best selling albums, there will be almost nobody buying cds. Cd numbers have been going down year after year. By 2017 when he starts getting rights to albums that actually sold, most of the people interested will be in their late 40's, their 50's or 60's, and probably won't be rushing out to buy physical cds. Even download sales are dropping. Remasters sales by any artists are not really that high.

Maybe, maybe not. I think you are slightly exaggerating the age of his fanbase. I'm thirty-one and there are plenty of fans my age or younger. I also don't agree that cd sales are struggling as badly as you portray them. No doubt they are going down but I think there are still enough people that would buy remasters to make it worthwhile for him, assuming there were lots of extras included. We will see what happens.
