i haven't listened to this one in a long, long time. from what i remember i liked it

a lot, but only the first half. then he takes the song into this whole weird sexual

direction that felt kind of weird to me.

don't get me wrong, i don't mind sexual prince or prince just crooning about his

lady, not at all. just not on this song. it felt a bit out of place here.

but i'll have to give it another listen, perhaps i remember it wrong.

the covers on emancipation were all quite good.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Initially yes, then only about a week or so later, I heard George Michaels version which totally blows Princes version away, even if he had written this himself....

As P. himself said straight afterwards, "Turn off that weak jam man, come on..."

Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

I like it, but I agree that the version by George Michael is superior.

In retrospect I think it's the best of the cover songs on Emancipation. At least in the sense that it actually fits his style. The other songs sound a bit out of place on it (as great a song as "La, La, La (Means I Love U" is, it's not really something that he needed to do himself).

I absolutely LOVE Bonnie Raitt's original. It makes me cry because the emotion is so strong.

I think George Michael's version is "whiny".

Prince should have just changed the title to "I Can't Make You Sleep with Me".

I must be meant to respond as it was playing when I saw your note. I love his version, and I'd always liked BR's. I like Prince's delivery--he sounds like he means it and breaks my heart.

The Bonnie Raitt version (the original) is one of my fav songs of all time but I love Prince's version. I just heard Bon Iver's version about a month ago and that version is superior to prince's cover

Big, fat "nay" on that one.

I hate that song no matter who does it. "I know you don't love me but sleep with me anyway so I can pretend you do." Really? Yuck. Do something productive - go out and find your self respect.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Not really a fan of any of the Emancipation covers. I would have much preferred to have had four more new Prince originals. I like all of the unreleased songs on Emancipation: The Secret Chapter better than the covers.

Big no...both GM's and Bonnie Raitt's versions are amazing, Prince version didn't do anything to me.

No way. He completely butchered a beautiful song with plastic production and sexualized come-on lyrics.

It's almost as if he had no idea idea what this song was about or what makes it so wonderful.

All the covers on there were quite nice-I think he did decent with this one. It's overly sexual cuz it's Prince lol

Out of all the covers he's done I La La makes me cringe sometimes-it's kinda one of those songs that should be left alone with just the original version lol

It's not that...

I'm not big on remakes anyway, but then he changed the meaning of the song. pout

Indeed, even having "1000 hugs and kisses" in pl of a cover would have been decent.

slightly off-topic, the George Michael version is on the Unplugged sessions for those searchin'... it's a very VERY good show all round.

This is a definite yes. Baby boy tore that falsetto up. When he sings I can't make U love me, then has that line come in again right behind it, just dayum! music

Prince knows he can put his "mark" on a song. That's what I love about him. The other versions pale in comparison to me.

... as a few of you all have mentioned, when I heard it ( originally ) I didn't know it was Bonnie Raiit written / penned.

I feel Prince did the song justice and I'm not embarrassed to say I tear up when I hear this song or her's

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
