Songs that start off great and end up sublime

The extended version of Mountains. Awesome to begin with - and then it just goes on to a whole 'nother level of amazingness.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

^ Good one.

I would also add:

I Wish U Heaven Parts 1, 2 & 3

Purple Music (at the start of it I always think it sounds like it's going to be an odd quirky short song, but by the end of it I'm thinking wow, that was fucking brilliant)

Automatic

Empty Room (c-note version)

And possibly:

The Human Body (although I think it starts off ok and ends up pretty good - not quite sublime)

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Dolphin (although it took me a while to appreciate the beginning). Also from C-Note the Osaka Soundcheck. Nice atmosphere and build up to a guitar solo that is just too short.

Yes, yes, yes.

As most folks know, I am not a huge fan of The Rainbow Children, as a whole. But I love The Sensual Everafter. That track is way too short.

nod yep, that's an obvious one.

And since somebody said "Let's Go Crazy", too, let me add in "When Doves Cry" - I actucally like the 2nd half better than the 1st.

The unreleased long version of Computer Blue. I am in awe of it.

I absolutely love the last minute or so of Sticky Like Glue.

I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man...when the breakdown comes and then intensely builds up till the song comes back.

OH, and how could I forget--Erotic City from the June 7, 1984, birthday show whose soundboard was just leaked last year. The last couple minutes of that are an absolute eargasm.

I think the bootleg extended versions of "Computer Blue" go from a bland song to a very interesting song.

Not a Prince song, but since he's covered it, I nominate "Stand" by Sly & The Family Stone.

Man, listening to How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore from the One Night Alone live CD. He takes it to the limit, the song breaks with a scream that echoes through the arena, and then he closes it out with a slow jam style exit. Most excellent!

Noon Rendezvous from '84 Birthday Show, Wendy & Lisa repeating the refrain "Sittin' in this cafe, waiting on my baby...", the "joy in repetition" really takes you places.

One more... Tangerine with the extended instrumental outro... angel

"Dorothy Parker" - The Sly funk groove at the end w/ the wah wah made me want to hear more.

"Neon Telephone" - I love the pop feel of that song. And then that monster funk groove kicks in and it's like "whoa".

"Holeinthehead" - See above. That ending is pure P-Funk.

"Into The Light/I Will" - Brilliance

" I Wanna Be Your Lover"

Interesting. Don't get me wrong, I love this song too, but it seems to me to stay very much the same from beginning to end.

Gotta agree with La La La, Hee Hee Hee and The Sensual Everafter, and would add Last December.

Brenda's background voice getting louder and Prince vamping to something that seems a funk cresendo is amzing to me. The song is incredible to me.

"Shhh" comes to mind too.

I tried to think of some songs from his more recent output, but couldn't really come up with any. Maybe that's one of the problems why so many people feel like his recent output is lacking something. His songs do not "evolve" in the same manner as before. There doesn't have to be an ecstatic guitar solo at the end, but just something that takes the arrangement to a next level.
