The screaming is unneccessary

Yes. The screaming is obnoxious and ruins the song for me.

Holy River. That horseshit at the end makes absolutely no sense with the rest of the song.

The Continental - It's only listenable when you cut off that whole "sexy" telephone conversation part with Carmen Electra.

Have to disagree, the second half is the better of the two. its a funky bit that i liked even more when he did it live on Act 1, mixing it with "Get on up"

I agree, I don't get into the song "The Continental" but I really love the second half which is really a different thing altogether. If I made a mix reduction version of this album for carplay, I'd just figure out a way to have only the second half as the cut on the album sequence.

Nice underworld funk jam until the "conversation" at the end; cool the first time you hear it, a little less cool every time after that...

This right here. It's the one reason I don't play this album at work. Wouldn't wanna be outta the room when that crazy shit goes down! lol

Yep it's different production that I don't like as much at all.

I totally agree. Cannot stand that. In fact, I think lots of songs on Emancipation suffer from that. Random ass 2 minute outro endings. Guess he had to fill the disc to an hour somehow.

Beginning Endlessly

Starts off like it's going to be an interesting song, and then just meanders into boring repetition and stupid lyrics.

Yup. Can't stand that. I find that I was really excited upon the first bit of Beginning Endlessly and Compassion and then they just trailed off into random nothingness.

Good thread topic.

The one that leaps out me is : "I Hate U" . I did an edit of that one and cut off the end when i listen to it.

Also "Underneath the Cream". I love that song for about the first half but then just loses it somewhere in there.

Yes agree wholeheartedly. Sometimes Prince tries to put two songs in one. He should just make a different song and keep the first one as special as it is instead of watering it down with nonsense at the end.

I prefer the 2nd half of both of those songs.

Love 2 The 9s is the #1 answer for me, though. I can't stand the later part of that song.

I wouldn't say they "end badly", but those extended sections of "When Doves Cry" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend" are a bit unnecessary. I have nothing against them, but the actual songs are so strong that the last minute or two of both feel a bit directionless.

I always have to laugh when I hear WDC played in a mall somewhere and hear Prince screaming his ass off though. It always sticks out from the rest of the "classic stuff" they have on their playlists. lol

Oh fuck, "Adore". I really think those "choral voices" at the end of it are the worst moment on SOTT. All those adlib parts during the second half are fantastic, but that very last part just goes into kitsch territory.

Great thread!

This is one of the reasons why Prince is so unique!

Ever heard Bryan Adams or Mariah doing these kind of "long" songs where suddenly "things" happen lol

Although sometimes he also ruins the songs or -like a critic said in the 80´s-abord his own hits with instrumentals at the end that bother the casual listener. The Continental was also the first song I thought about, I also remember a friend back in the 90´s asked "when is THIS gonna end, what is that??" refering to the second part. It really kills the flow and power of the first part!!!!!

Maybe he should have made 2 songs; The Continental and How U wanna B done..everybody pleased wink I think he should have edited a lot of songs on prince like mentioned :Love 2 the 9´s also Morning papers and 7!!

Other Prince songs like NOW, Beautiful night,Glam slam,Sleep around,LOVESEXY,Billy Jack Bitch (!!!) and many others are better because they JAM at the end cool

They practically are two songs already, though.

I guess it matters if you're making a mix tape and only want the first part, but otherwise, it just doesn't bother me.

Actually, I much prefer songs with bad endings to songs with bad beginnings, such as The Flow. I can skip an ending, I can't skip the beginning as easily.

People let's not forget a video put out several years ago when Pepe Willie said that Prince and his first band (Grand Central) would start a song cover and then jam for 15 minutes. He has done this several times throughout his career with songs on 12" and released albums. Example America (12" version)

LOL that's the part I like!

The beginning is like Beverly Hills 90210

Yes and yes.

I mentioned the 90210 reference in our Emancipation podcast and I too also hate those salsa endings !!

Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Gold

This song starts off with promise, but by the end it’s almost impossible not to cynically roll your eyes at the cheesy lyrics and awful keyboard parts. The Cross works so well because it is a two chord riff with a simple repeating melody and sincere lyrics. Gold falls apart because it has layers upon layers of crap topped with cheese whiz.

Wedding Feast.

I've never lost an erection so quickly in my life upon first hearing that. Starts off so cool.

Just as well the rest of the album is awesomeness.

So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

Go sit in the corner and think about what you said. And don't come out until I say you can. hmph!

Pop Life. As much as i love this song, the ballgame break at the end has always bothered me. Wonder if a version exists without it. And no the extended version is not the same.

The 9:00 version from the UK 12" is spectacular and not as "over produced" as the US 12" single. Plus it doesn't have the "ball game" part in it.

Undisputed-The Chuck D rap

It is by no means 1999, but it had potential. Ditto for the "The sun, the moon, and stars"
"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

The extended version is the only version of "Pop Life" that I'll listen to. I really wish Prince would've made room for that on the album. I hate the album version.

Adorecream

Muse to the pharoah - great sung intro descends into a rather tired rap, the rhythm goes.

Mr Happy - The turn off that wack jam part is actually entertaining

Saviour would be an all time great, except some one did not cut it at the right time, the song starts great and just becomes overproduced and tired with over the top soul screams like Pretend were married, but unlike that song, theres no funny raps or lines like "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth in it"

Automatic - by 7 minutes when they are talking about having to torture you know, is funny but wears out its welcome after a while.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
