And no doubt its gonna be his best since.....(insert personal favourite) and all the shite that accompanies his every release. I hope that he NEVER releases a cut again, just to spite all the wankers!

Noone (rec company) is willing to pay any $'s for another failure of a Prince album that is not gonna sell....
Prince hasn't sold much in a very very looong time, even the long time hardcore fans aren't buying his albums anymore.
Still he want big $ for his albums....
(well, that's my guess - what is yours...?)
ps. Extra Lovable, on iTunes and else where is and was a huge failure, right?!

His albums are only really failures to fans. Lotusflow3r sold over 500,000 copies...obviously that sum was helped by the ridiculous discounting Target did but it it still sold a few hundred thousand before that. Madonna's new album opened with 359,000 this week but will struggle to reach platinum. Springsteen's new album is barely going to pass gold. Prince can't command the millions of dollars he used to (which he will have to accept) but a new Prince album is still attractive to labels. His last four studio sets have all debuted in the top 3 and receive generally favorable reviews from critics who aren't as hung up on his past and expect another Sign O' The Times like we do.
And Extralovable, with zero promotion, still topped the iTunes R&B chart for a few days and peaked just outside the overall iTunes Top 100. Better than any single from new albums by Springsteen, The Shins, Bon Iver, Melanie Fiona, or any number of other respected acts who do well.
Album sales are down across the board, outside of phenomenons like Adele; a veteran act like Prince with a built-in fan base of around 100,000 (us plus those casual fans who still check out his new material when they're aware it exists) is a good deal to most labels.

without saying too much i'll share this here quietly: A first hand witness informed me that while recording in LA this past October, Prince worked on both "his girlfriend's and his own album". This person is not necessarily a Prince fan but said it was amazing seeing him jam on several instruments.
