Probably not. Let's say Prince was the same 19 year old in 2012 as he was in the 70's. Major labels wouldnt know what to do with him. These days, the few acts that do get signed to majors need to have a smash out the gate. So even if he did get signed because some rare a&r took a chance, you can bet after "For you" he would have gotten his walking papers. Let's go the route of another label realizing his genius and giving him a second shot. Although "Prince" had a hit with "I wanna be your lover" the album still didnt move units, so again the door would be calling. This current climate is not condusive to finding talented unique artist. Thank God for the internet and indies.
I'm pretty sure the "Prince"album moved units in it's initial run.Its was certified Platinum bye the RIAA in "80.But he would get signed and be as big .Cee-LoJohn Mayer,Bruno Mars,Alicia Keys are all in the same vein as artists as Prince, and they do just fine. |

If he did get signed, he wouldn't get airplay and he'd be so far underground that you'd have to "search for him". Andy is a four letter word. |

If Prince was 19 today, he would probably reinvent the music of today. Getting inspired by both old classics and new styles, and he would merge it into new genres or sub genres. We don't even know if he would focus much on guitar, but maybe advanced drum programming, sampling, sound engineering. Maybe go in a direction similar to James Blake, or the absolute opposite of him.
Of course he would get signed! |
