ugh .. i was gonna try not to chime in again but u sucked me in

no i dont agree that most prince fans think gold is his last great record

i actually like nps better .. only because it has a couple of true classics .. come on and the one

and some of the other lyrical content is not so bad

tho some is .. i find it far more digestable than gold experience lyrically

in my mind the difference between purple rain and gold (the songs) is huge ..

come on and gett off are both super funky i might even like come on better

so there u have it ..

eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek

eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek

eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek eek

fuck me!!!!!!!! i have been on this site for ten years plus and nobody has EVER shocked me till now

NPS BETTER THAN GOLD ?? neutral neutral neutral neutral neutral

wow!

ha well somebody has got to carry on the shocking torch since prince dropped it right around .. when gold experience came out ..

btw .. i just watched prince rock n rio yesterday and omg it was soo bad .. what the hell was prince thinking .. and i really like a lot of diamonds and pearls .. i dont consider it a bad era

dnp is a great song

gett off is pretty good

money dont matter

walk dont walk

thunder

daddy pop

cream

insatialbe

all top quality minus tony m

but what does prince do .. opens with HORNY PONY and jams on it for like 10 minutes .. my god prince is a horrible rapper .. he is just torturing that audience .. pure torture

nobody and i mean nobody came to hear prince sing horny pony .. but there it is front and center

i used to think gold was the record prince jumped the shark on .. with crap like now and p control and not much in between to make up for it .. but now i am thinking it was this concert .. and horny pony .. the official beginning of the end of prince as a credible musician

that horribel concert also almost inspired me to start a thread called ...

if prince is so great why cant he ever pull off KISS live .. he butchers that song every single time

even with the revolution he couldn't give it life onstage .. what a studio master piece tho .. a guy as rich as him ought to be able to replicate its awesomeness onstage but it just never happens .. always some wierd ass new arrangement that doesnt work

as for nps .. push it up, freaks on this side, till ur in my arms again are all solid .. mad sex would be great with some lyrical adjustments .. wasted kisses is decent .. prince even called it his best record at some point .. gold is just too much of an old man prince record desparately trying to act hip and throwing around slang that simply makes him sound like an out of touch poser .. in fact .. horny pony would have fit nicely on gold .. and did he really need to tour with a giant vagina as his stage .. i swear prince looked and acted just like bevis during this era .. both with the typhoon hair .. and stupid 3rd grade sex concepts ..

Gold should've have Interactive included back to back with Endorphine Machine.

rock in rio was done prior 2 diamonds and pearls coming out

and check out the version of kiss during the sign o' the times period ..pure kick ass

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Obviously Gold is a much more vibrant album than NPS, there is mostly a consensus on this point, but NPS is a very good album. I will make the point that the Truth may actually be better than Gold, that I do believe.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

the lyrics on nps and gold are embarrassing .. but gold is worse .. its far more bevis and butthead than nps ... new universal standard .. level of bevis and buttheadedness of lyrics must be factored into all reviews biggrin .. musicology marked the first record with songs you could almost get thru without cringing too many times from super bad lyrics .. altho not neccesarily a huge improvement .. at least the vanilla ice slang was toned down

I was going to debate you by pointing out that some people feel the opposite about music that you do... for some of us the greatest lyrics in the world over lame music equals unlistenable crap. But, regardless of whether one is more focused on musicianship, melody, rhythm, lyrics, vocal quality, etc... whatever barometer one uses to judge music, a song or an album... that last paragraph, to quote Billy Sparks, "makes sense to no one, but yourself".

Are you sure you're not a troll? I only ask because, here in the real world, you sure seem like you might be... biggrin

Don't be stressed by me though... it's all just opinion, which, thanks to freedom, does not impose standards.

no i am not a troll

lyrics make or break a song

prince lyrics took a nose dive on gold and never recovered

i am a huge fan of prince at his best

i dont mind prince when he is just ok

prince can really put out some cringe worthy songs tho and there are a lot on gold

supposedly you argue that standards are irrelevant ... yet i get labeled a troll if i have different standards .. sounds like you are imposing your standards on me by calling me names if i disagree

prince does still make good music .. and that is the real core of why prince fans get pissed .. such good ideas get ruined by prebubescent lyrics .. real prince fans expect more maturity out of the guy by now ... and no more cookie cutter ballads and funk jams please .. back to mindblowingly good or nothing at all .. too much shit over the years not enough good stuff .. hes been given a couple decades of patience by his fans .. its time for him to deliver

Lyrics make or break a song... in YOUR opinion.

Musicianship makes or breaks a song... in MY opinion.

When it comes to OPINIONS, standards ARE irrelevent. Or, rather, each opinion is based on the individual's standards, and are as irrelevent to others as opposing opinions.

You base your opinion on your standards. I base my opinion on my standards.

It would be ridiculous if it was otherwise. In fact, if other's standards were imposed on our opinions, then, they would not be our opinions.

I only joked about you possibly being a troll because of your opinion that NPS is better than Gold. This is very much a minority opinion. You might want to rethink imposing standards on opinions as the majority would impose standards that would make your opinion wrong. As it is without standards, your opinion cannot be wrong because it is yours. Thankfully you are free and no standards are being applied to your opinion.

no .. standards are being applied to my opinion and .. my opinion is right

end of story .. without standards opinions are like pissing in the wind

lets say you are a big vanilla ice fan .. well then you have no standards .. so of course your opinion is going to be that prince is a good rapper .. standards generally do not exist until you have experienced or delved into the field in question enough to know the difference between rapping and good rapping .. lyrics and good lyrics .. beats and good beats .. i only take issue with the peach a black guys, representing themselves as hardcore prince fans, and then labeling gold a classic album .. while stating that they ignored the lyrics .. in the realm of musical reality .. their standards are very low .. if they don't even listen to the lyrics .. unfortunately we have a problem as a society as a whole .. the standards are low .. every 'product' is pure crap that literally poisons its consumers .. art is crap .. politics are crap .. not enough people saying .. this is crap .. call it crap .. reject it .. dont pay for it .. make the world a better place .. make music nobody else makes .. prince used to be a leader in art with integrity .. gold marks a loss of integrity as a quality musician for prince .. and in terms of musician ship .. half the beats on gold are stock rap beats you can find on your average crappy keyboard you buy at kmart .. its sad .. bland is a great drummer and its fun to hear quality musicians play .. even if the songs are stupid .. but it is most certainly time for any one with half a brain .. and i would like to think prince fans are the more intelligent of music fans .. to stand up call shit shit .. demand something better .. and in closing .. prince knew this was a bad record when he handed it in .. he was pissed at wb .. he said it right in the title .. all that glitters aint gold .. he was talking about this glittery album .. prince had more balls when he sang about head than he did saying mutherfucker every other word all over this slab of steaming poo of a record ..

The Gold Experience is a crappy album. You are not a troll to say that. To me it is a bizarrely overrated album by a vocal minority here on the Org. It's just an opinion, but as valid as saying it is a good album.

Really ? I think I'll have to disagree with that one.

I think the majority of Prince fans would agree that The Gold Experience is up there with the symbol album as the best of his 90's work. Am I wrong ?

Methinks it's time for a greatest 'Prince' album survey in the not too distant future to settle this once and for all lol

As far as the artistical direction is concerned I'd say that NPS is the better album. It sees Prince experimenting and taking risks. Whereas the conventionally sounding TGE is completely devoid of experimental aspects for the most part (except for P Control of course).

nps has some good individual songs but it doesn't flow as natural as TGE imho not 2 mention some instrumentation that's been used previously

I am genuinely interested, which tracks on Newpower Soul would you say show Prince to be experimenting and taking risks? There is very little, if anything, on that album that he hasn't done better before.

I agree that The Gold Experience is a fairly conventional and commercial album but the quality of the songwriting is much higher than on Newpower Soul. I see the two albums as being fairly similar but the execution on The Gold Experience is vastly superiour.

Well, isn't it funny that you have to call a somewhat ordinary album like NPS experimental in the context of Prince's oeuvre? lol

Of course NPS is not a good album. Like all the other albums after the 80s it also didn't succeed in establishing a convincing contemporary sound. But still: he tried at least.

TGE is nice. Some good old school band approach, but that's it.
