Yes, nice thread, nice stories. I live in L.A. and I've seen celebrities and almost always they are not accosted, when I've seen them. But I have noticed that they look nervous, they sort of flinch when a new person enters the store or gets near, like an abused puppy or something. It must be weird living your life being recognizable and "familiar" to complete strangers. It's even weird for me - the complete stranger - to instantly recognize a random person, so I can only imagine how it is for them.

Yeah, the PP gigs during the 90's were always full and tons of fun! No matter if the party was held in the soundstage, the back garage or the front foyer - they were always full. We used to call the PP front desk during the day, after noon of course and ask if there was a "party" (we meant concert but you couldn't call it that or they would correct you) that night. Or we'd hear on KMOJ or KDWB there would be a "party". If you found out there was a show from word of mouth chances were you were too late. Sometimes they parties were happening so frequently you could just drive by PP and see if the line was starting yet or not. You never knew how much $$$ to bring because some nights it cost $60 to get in and other nights it would be free. Usually it was $20 or so. Sometimes as you entered the party you'd get copies of new songs on cassette or fragrance thingies shaped in the O+> symbol and those nights the admission was for sure worth it but even if you didn't get anything the concert was worth the price of admission. I remember recognizing a lot of faces of other party goers that you'd see frequently at the shows but I never really got to know many of them. I've probably seen some of the posters in this post ("motherfunka", "XNY" or "Skywalker"). Sorry, I wasn't very outgoing then. I'd do it differently now. Anyway, they were good shows and good times back then.

The local rags (Star & Tribune, Pioneer Press and/or City Pages) always paid P his due respect by publishing favorable articles about him whenever he made local news as a member of Minnesota community. Aside from CJ who would jump on any chance to bad mouth him just to get more readers. Local TV news stations (WCCO, KSTP, KMSP and/or KARE) would also treat him well. I don't think the city of Chanhassen liked/like him very much; he has a problem paying his local taxes.

I'm in agreement so if I ever saw Prince up close I definitely wouldn't try to invade his space I'd thank him for the pics and music and keep it moving

CJ is special but yeah over the years I've heard that his city taxes weren't being paid appropriately-strange

I seem to remember that there was some random and hardly used bridge underpass wall grafitied with a beautiful mural of Prince and the Revolution in words in the Purple Rain font and a picture of P on his motorcycle painted by local graffiti artists. MPLS Artists dug Prince. And no one painted over it for a long time. I never saw it myself but have seen pictures of it. I'm not even sure where it was located. I think the location got nick named Graffiti Bridge in the 90’s

95 to 98 were fun years at the park as previously mentioned. Parties in 95 were normally full if it was annonced 96 to 98 was a little trickier. (I was lucky I had computer and was on the net, some guy would shoot me emails when it was on.) I was there alot, here are two of my most memorable although they were all crazy cool!
1. Prince was playing the small soundstage alot at the time, this must have been 98ish because the room wasn't jammed packed and he sung I never heard at the time... VaVaVoom. On one end sat the stage, the other was his soundboard. People would always crowd the stage and then it would thin out towards the middle and get light in the back. Prince liked to tweak the sound and run back and forth from stage to soundboard, so the trick was to hang back a bit to get a better look at him at the soundboard. So here I am in the middle of the floor, forgetting about the soundboard and watching the stage like everyone and I get run into from the back, I was like what the...and Prince says excuse me and continues to run through the side of the crowd back on stage before I really even knew what hit me. I guess you could say that was the closest I've been to Prince.
2. 95/96 the key word was party or performance, and sometimes you didn't know unless word got out, weird thing is that there was always a strange energy in the building when he was there, you could almost feel it if a performance was going to happen. Almost meaning you still glanced for his guitar tech. So one night, no guitar tech, Morris had left and it's tipped past 3:00am. Doors opened at 11ish and normally he would hit the stage around 1 to 1:30am If he was playing otherwise it was a dance party and he wasn't showing. Around 4ish house lights would come up and we'd go home. It wasn't always clockwork, but there was a pattern to it.
So this particular night the music is spinning and it's a cool dance party. It passes 4am with people dropping since 2am and most everyone has gone home, since I had nothing better to do I thought I'd chill until the house lights come up. It's now pushed past 5am, no house lights and maybe 25 of us still chilling and in walks Prince fresh as ever. He goes to the sound board and starts spinning his music, pushing buttons and singing. 25 of us surround the soundboard/mixer, maybe 2 to 3 deep and 4 feet away and are in awe for about 20 or 40 minutes. I don't remember any songs it was very free style. Prince says thank you for coming out, see you next week and dissappears and the house lights come up. We all look at each other like we just saw santa clause and then walk towards the door. As we head out the door it's light and now past 6am, just a few steps away his White BMW Z3 is parked sideways probably still warm from the drive from his house. You got to love living in Minneapolis!

I have pictures of the bridge (and me standing next to it) from when I was young. It was a white bridge and it had Prince on the motorcycle from Purple Rain. It had to be 1986...maybe 1987. My mom’s best friend lived in Minneapolis, so she showed me the bridge, Paisley Park and his house. I remember there was nothing but Paisley Park, his house and another small home in Chanhassen. Everything was fields and dirt roads. lol!!!! I remember the security guard was real cool at his house. It's not the same security house there today. Back then, it was the size of an outhouse. It was one young guy with a bunch of security scenes. The guy at Paisley Park was an a$$....some older maintenance guy with jeans.
Has anyone been out to the house latley? I was out there about a year ago and everything is still torn down. Prime aka The Kid

So true...the Celebration festivals were awesome...(sorry for the late response, I only get here about once a week). Would love it if he did something like that again. Something for little ones too. It was so weird that it took all of my life to arive at that place. Then to only meet people who complained and critizied everything about what was happening. I wish that I was stronger then, I wouldn't have listened to anyone!!

(sorry for the long wait on a response...have 3 little ones who keep me busy) Not sure if we know eachother but I'm sure I've seen you. I used to go with my sister every weekend - for the concerts and Brother Jules dance parties. Man, those were the days! Either you could catch him at Paisley for like ten bucks, or at the Glam Slam VIP room. We were seriously spoiled. I think back now and it seems like an amazing dream. One night we saw Terence Trent D'arby at First Ave, then went out to Paisley for Prince's show. Ended about 5:30 in the morning and I think back about how lucky and blessed we were to be in Mpls during that period. Was that the way it was if you saw Beethoven or Mozart compose and perform in their heydays...? And every PP show was different. Every show had a different vibe. He even let me sing on his 'gun' mic once during "Letitgo". Absolutely blew my mind!! If that doesn't bond us I don't know what would. When I was in Minne for one of the "Celebrations", my friend locked the keys in the car at the target so while she was waiting for AAA some locals offered to give me a ride back over to Paisley Park... they were really nice people, but they were kinda laughing at me when I told them I flew in all the way from San Diego for the weeks festivities...

This thread is great, guys. Loving reading about all of your experiences. Wish I was old enough and wise enough to be around Minneapolis back then.
Can I just say, it is soo nice to read a thread from start to finish with anybody being negative or badmouthing anyone.
Keep the memories coming!!!!

I love this thread the stories are great thanks for sharing them. I live in London and at the time I kept hearing these stories about Paisley Park Parties and Concerts and just being so jealous. So glad you all got to experience it.

I know this thread sort of ended last week, but I just wanted to add how privileged I was to be here - in Mpls - in the mid 90's, getting to experience so many amazing shows, week after week. I moved here in 1992 because of school and ended up staying. Even with the long winters, it was sooo worth it ! Between Glam Slam, Paisley Park, the NPG Store and several related band performances - I didn't know how spoiled and lucky I was until most of it ended after the Celebrations. I was single, no kids, and worked nights downtown so I heard about the performances word of mouth at clubs or from friends who worked for him. It was truly a special time in Mpls. I remember getting the Goldnigga cd (at the NPG store) and just loving "Johnny"... and then got to hear him play it live about a month later at Glam Slam. I was singin "Uh oh oh! -Uh oh ohh!" before the band even chimed in, and I was so pumped that I'd heard something hardly anyone knew about. For lack of a better description, it felt as though I had a direct line to Prince. I was there when he filmed videos, when he debuted new projects like 3Chains of Gold, Welcome 2 the Beautiful Exp and Rave 2000 and so on. Then after the amazing Celebration festivals... it all came to a screeching halt. Life went back to normal it seemed. Almost ten years of breath-taking performances and the like...and it was over. What happened I'll never know, but to be there for most of it...wow. For the rest of my life I'll always feel sooo blessed to have witnessed Prince create and perform during that decade. Someday I'll get to tell my son these stories. Maybe he won't care, but I'll know exactly where I was when Prince handed me his mic to sing 'Let it Go...!" And baby boy, I was on Cloud 9. I wonder if Prince was racing... or trying to get away! I've only seen him in a car once, but the windows were really tinted. He rolled his window down outside Paisley Park, and quickly raised it up. It was the only purple Dodge Viper I'd ever seen. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

that didn't even occur to me, but it could've been the case. apparently prince was on his own

I think what happened is that Prince wanted a different audience than MPLS so he moved to LA. After the 90's surprise appearances and up to the celebration(s) in MPLS he started throwing parties/shows at the 3121 house in LA with the rich and famous in the audience. We all have to admit having LA's golden elites in your audience makes more headlines then our MPLS audience. I bet Prince figured if it worked for Elton John (Oscar Parties) it could work for him. And you know what, it did. Notice how coverage of Prince jumped up? He reinvented himself; he's always been good at that.

I've noticed most of us are from the '90s era of Prince fans. I became a true Prince fan in '89 (waited in line for the Batman album) so technically I was from the '80s at the last minute but for conversation sake we'll go with the '90s
So what I'd like to hear about are the first hand pre-90's MPLS stories about Prince. Who of us were there in the late '70s and throughout the '80s? Central high school stories? First Avenue stories? Fine Line Cafe stories? Sam's stories? Wherehouse stories? Paisley Park stories? Lake Minnetonka stories?
I was born in '75 and didn't hear about Prince till I saw Purple Rain, had to close my eyes at the dirty parts. (I peaked a little.) So I was too young to get in on the First Ave shows, would have loved to have been of age and there during that era. I can only imagine the First Ave regulars wondering who this short dude in bikini briefs is doing up on stage, I dunno but I can take my eyes off of him and his stage presence. Commanding! I was too young to go to concerts but wished I could have gone to see the Met Center shows and I remember driving by the St. Paul Civic Center the morning of the PR concerts during Xmas week.
I did hear talk about Paisley Park being built sometime in '86/'87, nothing important enough to mention here. And I had an older distant cousin who worked there, not sure what she did or whatever had become of her. I should look her up and ask for some stories. She had an "Under the Cherry Moon" jacket she used to wear in the middle of summer, I thought it was cool but novel.

these two post are great Funny story!! Reminds me of a funny experience I had in 1994 when my friend & I took a once in a life time trip to Minneapolis. We stayed in St.Paul the last part of our holiday & got the bus into Mpls one sunny day. Anyhow, en route the bus picked up 2 passengers who spotted us young filles straight away & one guy said "Im gonna sit over here!" with a smile & raised eyebrows, to say the least! Now one guy had a stookie(plaster cast)on his leg & the other guy had a clear plastic shower cap on his head(?) as he squeezes right in between me & my pal. He turns to me & says "HMMM Hmmm, aint u a cute little thing!?" I was affronted. He asked us our names & where we came from then asked why we were in Moneyapolis, & laughed in a deep voice. We both smile & brightly replied "Prince!" to which he questioned...."Prince? Rogers Nelson?? I went to school wi the bas*ard!" Ha ha, that made our day!! He then told us about the school he went to etc but his mate was soon shouting at him to get off the bus cuz it was their stop!! Fabulous fun! We still didny find Prince Lol!
