It's a shit sandwich...the cinematography is outstanding, but the script is a joke.

Making UTCM in black and white was a huge mistake. In 1986,not too many people were interested in seeing a "romantic comedy" in black and white lol If it had been in color,it might have attracted more people.

but it inspired steven speilberg to make swindlers fist in black and white a few years later, as well as the movie the artist (which is obviously named after prince with it's subtle reference to "the artist" formally known as...)

I seriously doubt that those movies were "inspired" by UTCM lol

UTCM is like godfather part 2 compared to graffiti bridge though

i also think prince was far ahead of time in creating a black and white movie over 25 years before that movie the artist that's going to win all the oscars

Um, yeah - Raging Bull, The Elephant Man, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Manhattan...there are no other examples of better movies that pre-date this piece of crap. eek

of course they were. why do you think the dog in the artist was called prince? or the japanese bombers in speilbergs movie shouting tora tora? blatant prince references. they even use big subtitle cards during the artists just like in the video for "the one"

even Prince hated it:

DMSR The First Decade-the books greatest hits

From the book DMSR The First Decade,..these passages trip me out a bit hehe:

Pg195-
Later in April, Prince and Susannah separated after living together for only a few months. Some insiders blames pressures brought on by problems with the new movie. “Prince had a lot of things going on, but he wasn’t happy with his life at that time”, says Susan Rogers. “He knew he had made some serious judgement errors in making UTCM. I came to the house one morning and Susannah said, ‘Oh, we had a terrible night last night. He was lying on the floor, face down, all night, repeating repeatedly that he hated the movie’. He was miserable. It was after the film was done, but it hadn’t been released yet. He knew it just wasn’t happening”

I think what happened is....after Purple Rain,Prince began thinking that he could do anything and the fans would be there to support it.It's the classic case of celebrity ego going out of control...lol...he fired the director of UTCM and directed it himself, despite the fact that he had no real experience in directing (he had only directed the "Raspberry Beret" video). He made the same mistake in 'Graffiti Bridge'....biting off more than he could chew.He never figured out that the main reason why 'Purple Rain' was so successful is because someone else wrote it,and someone else directed it.Nobody can do everything on their own.

UTCM --> style, sexy, and very humorous.

Nevermind it doesn't work as a "real" movie,

I still love UTCM a lot... heart worship

Speilberg had the japanese bombers shout "tora tora" as an homage to Prince? Really?!?

You must be joking, you can't believe that... wink

Hello...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tora!_Tora!_Tora!

Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 American-Japanese war film that dramatizes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. [...] The title is the Japanese code-word used to indicate that complete surprise was achieved. It literally means "Tiger, tiger, tiger".

I don't know anything about the movie "The Artist", but, Prince did not come up with the concept of Tora Tora, nor did Speilberg borrow it from him.

If you accept it as the campy bit of fluff that it is, Under The Cherry Moon is entertaining. Basically, it's a vanity piece - nothing more.

As a major studio release, it's horribly embarrassing. And it's a huge testament to how Warner Brothers felt about Prince that they gave him the money for this - and Graffiti Bridge after this was such a disaster.

He never had any right to bitch about their treatment of him after they put up the money for this dreck.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Good or bad, it's a movie I reach for when I feel like feelin' good!

I don't think Prince should be making movies for mass audiences any more than I feel like Martin Scorcese should be making records for mass audiences. cool

UTCM is a great movie. I much prefer it over "Purple Rain".

With that said, I can see why it got slammed by critics. The acting is indeed cheesy at times but I don't think Prince was trying to win an Oscar here. It's just silly yet fun and entertaining movie. I love it.

I love UTCM too. It's such a guilty pleasure. A playful Prince showing his funny side playing a gigolo!! Love the soundtrack and the B&W photography. I didn't know it's the same cinematographer of many Scorsese films-- including Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, and The Departed. The fact that not too many people have seen this makes it special for me that this movie is kinda cult film for Prince fans. And I doubt many people familiar with Kristin Scott Thomas and loved her in The English Patient has ever seen or heard of this movie. But we do! smile

I will present these and you all can riff on them. Tell the critics why they are wrong. I am board with loving the movie, mostly because Prince asks so much like a fool in it. He actually does direct it really well--it's funny, goofy, a decent b-movie.

It's a terrible movie. Only entertaining if you're a prince fan.

And the movie goer is not obligated to be a Prince fan.

So, they're well deserved criticisms.
