It must be great being new to P's music! So many great records to go through... You must 've been having a great time over the last few months

Have you heard most albums by now, DorothyParker4?

I first took a real interest in Prince when I heard 'Gett Off' back in '91. As a kid I'd heard songs like 'Kiss' and 'Purple Rain' on the radio, but at the tender age of 14 'Gett Off' really struck a chord with me. I guess it was the end of my innocence! Watching the video afterwards completely sealed the deal Back then, D&P was such a great album to me, but upon listening to it again recently (it had been collecting dust on my coveted Prince shelf for a few years), songs like 'Push' and 'Jughead' don't quite cut it anymore.

SOTT was the 1 that got me curious, but PR was the 1 that said GOTTDAMN!!! That's a Badd Muthafucka yessir!!! lol As kids Michael was our innocence thru adolescence first kiss/crush, while Madonna and Prince, were the monster fucks that turnt us all in2 freaks. lol What I love about him the most is how when walks on2 a stage, b4 he even says 1 word, we all still loose our minds 30 years later.

I was only 13 when I bought my first P album and thinking back, it was just pure chance. At the time I was a fan of Michael Jackson more than anything. I'd only heard a handful of Prince songs like 1999, Kiss, When Doves Cry etc.

But in the year 1999 my girlfriend at the time told me about a movie she had seen the night before called Purple Rain, and how she couldn't stop thinking about the lead actor and how ''hot'' he was. Seeing this as competition, I decided to check out the film myself and I just remember buying it on VHS for about 3.99 in a sale and being blown away by the musical performances in it. The next day I went out to buy the soundtrack but I couldn't find it anywhere so I got Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic instead, which had only just been released as far as I can remember...

I thought it was the coolest thing ever and even then, though still a Jacko fan, I realised what real music was. It was only after this when I got Purple Rain, 1999, Dirty Mind and every other album the man's ever done.

I love me some 'Strollin'! Indeed, 'Money don't matter' is great too. Have you noticed how they tend to include 'Money' on greatest hits collections ('Very best of'), even though it didn't really achieve such a high chart position? Also, I've always thought this album starts and ends in a really great way, with dramatic songs like 'Thunder' and 'Live 4 love'. I played that last song at school for an assignment on war. (Good thing 'The War' jam wasn't released yet God only knows how many purple songs I unleashed upon my poor unsuspecting fellow students

I suddenly remember playing 'Jughead' for a totally unrelated assignment, just to enrage an annoying teacher. Even back then I knew what horrors Tony M was capable of

You asked for suggesions for albums. I find "One night alone", the acoustic album P released online, a great album to wake up to. Intimate music for breakfast, gets me prepared for the rest of the day!

I got to admit, I know exactly what your girlfriend of the time was talking about! I know the symptoms personally.. That movie made me a believer! Reaaly cool story, I guess you've got a lot to thank her for eh ? One question I've just got to ask now, since you were originally an MJ fan, Prince or MJ?

I still like MJ but I lost a lot of respect for him after ''Invincible'', his older music from the 80's is still cool, if a little overplayed on radio and TV.

I'm definitely firmly in the Prince camp though. After listening to his musical diversity, there could only be one winner for me.

I love our hero as much as we all do but yo, I gotta beg 2 differ on Invincible. In the breakdown of You Rock My World when he hits that high note (Got to have you heeeere),and hits that spin in the video, I felt like he still had that magic. Michael 2 me was like a magician. In his shows/music, he always had that sleight of hand way of doin things with his voice and dance, that made you wonder did I just see what I think I did? lol Way b4 This Is It when I saw his picture on the cover of Ebony in December 08' lookin healthy, I truly believed he was gonna shock the world 1 more time b4 it was all over.....

It's an acoustic album with slight overdubs. It has 'U're gonna C me' on it, which was revamped for the 'MPLS sound' disc of the Lotus Flower package.

There's also an official box set called 'One night alone...live' (triple cd, two discs of concert songs and one aftershow disc), which has nothing to do with the online release of the acoustic 'One night alone'.

In the summer of 1984. There was this song called When Doves Cry. And it had a song called 17 Days as the b-side.

I was hooked.

A few weeks later I saw him on Solid Gold, performing Little Red Corvette.

My interest in purple music grew in 1985 when I heard Raspberry Beret and Paisley Park.

Good times.

I must admit I kind of lost a bit of interest between Parade and Lovesexy. I liked Parade, loved SOTT and couldn´t really get into Lovesexy back then, and it took me years to appreciate the Batman album. Then a good friend of mine refreshed my interest in Prince by supplying me with tons of rare music.

When Doves Cry? 17 days? Rings a bell me thinks I haven't heard Paisley Park yet, but Rasberry Beret is my jam! I actually own one now in honour of it (shout out to my best mate for the thoughtful bday prezzie.) I haven't actually hear the Batman album or Lovesexy yet (minus the obvious tracks, alphabet st and if I was your gf,) but there always seems to be mixed reviews on them both, especially lovesexy?! What's the deal with them?

Oh, Lovesexy is a great album but back then I was too young to appreciate it, and I was too much into Funk, Electro Funk and real Hip Hop, and Prince´s image by then was way to effeminate for me as a teenager. Unlike other people I had no problem with the Lovesexy album cover but I strongly disliked Prince´s fashion sense during those days and the pictures in the tourbook.

The music was good but a bit overproduced (Eric Leeds once said that the original, less overproduced songs before the final mix sounded much more interesting. I´d love to hear those).

Batman just wasn´t really my thing, still isn´t, hated that movie, love the Nolan movies, and the album was a bit too slick, plus I couldn´t stand the hype and the Nude tour felt a bit cheap.

That is beautiful . I was beginning to lose hope in our generation.. In terms of its complete lack of interest in artists/music from back in the day. And then people like you prove me wrong! Prince rocks, and as a singer/songwriter myself, I couldn't hope for better inspiration! What's your fav Prince song

Defo want me some acoustic love, but also want to invest in some of his live albums, that man needs to be watched! Do you have any? Any recommendations for those?

The album you are talking about is not acoustic in the sense that you are probably thinking.

As for live albums, he only really has two main official live releases. The mentioned One Nite Alone..Live box set http://www.princevault.co...e..._Live! and Indigo Nights http://www.princevault.co...igo_Nights which came with the 21 Nights book.

There is of course the Rave Un2 The Year 2000, and Live At The Aladdin dvd's. These are the only official live shows on dvd.

There are however literally hundreds of high quality bootlegs of live shows both in audio and video.
