Let's Discuss Prince n Andre Cymone

The relationship between these two men is interesting hmmm I mean their history as teens/living situation and their friendship. I saw an interview where AC said it was planned for him to be in the band then to leave eek are they still friends? Let's discuss: feel free to post any history about them, pics, etc. While I listen to Kelly's Eyes music

U never know with Prince. He will slip in the studio with someone and U won't find out 4 years. I'm sure they may still jam together. Prince mentioned him again in a print interview recently.

André clearly was very important in Prince's life

especially

after he left home (got "kicked out??) when he was a teenager.

with Cymone's (Mother's) home..

Prince had a "safe environment" in which he could do his thing musically

alone

& with André & the other bands/musicians that they played with.

also

as André was basically Prince's "musical equal"

Prince knew he had to keep practicing/playing/perfecting his musicianship

& his style.

coming out of Minneapolis

it probably wasn't going to happen that

TWO

very talented multi-instrumentalists

would "make it"..

for better or for worse

Prince

"made it" - sooner & better.

André did too - but later.

as SOLID as André is/was..

I'm inclined to think

the "right one" made the bigger impact

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince

Chapter 1 HOME

p 10-11

Prince's friend and surrogate brother, Andre Anderson, was also musically inclined, and the 2 began to jam together regularly in his mother's basement.

Upstairs, Prince shared a bedroom with Anderson. Despite being good friends, they were poor roommates; Anderson's side of the room was cluttered and disorganized, while Prince's was as meticulously ordered as a Marine barrack. Although he no longer lived with his father, Nelson's disciplined approach to life remained a significant influence on Prince, who sought greater order and privacy by moving into the basement...

Downstairs, he had much easier access to his instruments; already, Prince had started blending the distinction between home and musical workplace. Moreover, the basement became something of a private universe - a small slice of the world where he was in total control. A dark space with little natural light, it was nonetheless where he felt most comfortable, and it provided a prototype for the cloistered recording studios where he would spend the majority of his waking hours over the next thirty-plus years.

...

The Anderson basement - Prince's bedroom and rehearsal space - also represented his first attempt to create an alternative community based around music and, perhaps, sex. Years later in interviews, Prince would recall it as a hedonistic wonderland where he and Anderson engaged in carnal acts with a variety of girlfriends.

...

"My impression is that there were a lot of girls in that basement," said Howard Bloom, Prince's press agent during the 1980s. "He had grown up in the 1960's and the message was make love, not war. In the basement, he was going for liberation and entitlement to any sort of sexuality, pleasure, and enjoyment."

Prince's style of playing bass is how Andre plays and Andre style of guitar is Prince's. I recall both of them saying this of each other. They couldn't help but learn from each other. It would be hot if they collaborated again to put out some fresh funk, the way they know how.

I've always wondered what Andre's lifestyle is like these days. He's such a part of the Prince folklore, and Prince fans can be .... nuts. I know he produced some minor hits, but he's probably living middle class, and well, accesible. That, and he's like Prince's musical brother, only taller and more masculine. How strange must that be? He must live this normal, hopefully happy life never knowing when some Prince related craziness is going to come up.

I kind of think Prince has taken good care of him. Kind of like Oprah takes care of Gayle. Andre hasn't spoken anything about Prince or himself in decades. Which is enough proof for me....

I agree-though Andre is very talented I think it was inevitable that Prince was gonna be a star, but I do believe he owes a lot to Andre and his mom.

This is a great post from Treehouse and you KCOOL and I would hope that Prince has taken care of both Andre and his mom if she's still living. I hope that andre has a good life. I have noticed that he hasn't said to much about Prince so they probably are still close.

THE PRINCE INTERVIEW
Mr. Purple Discusses His Movies, His Music, His Musicians
And More, More, More.

By Michael Shore

You gave Andre Cymone the song, "Dance Electric," for his new album, and we know that you two had some kind of falling out a few years back. When and how did you patch things up?

I saw him in a discotheque one night and grabbed him by his shirt and said, [at this point, Prince reenacts the scene down to the last facial gesture], "Come on, I got this hit. You know I got this hit, don't you? "Dance Electric"? Yeah, it's great. You need it, you need it. no... Hey, come here, don't you play, hey, no, no, no you're not crazy, I'm crazy. I'm the one that's crazy, K? What chu gonna do? You gonna come by? For real? You ain't mad or nothing? So what? Yeah tomorrow. Noon. Cool."

Yes, they did. I think there were 3, gorgeous kids. I used to work at the airport and would see them coming through the airport sometimes. I remember seeing Jody in an interview on Video Soul years later talking about how he was a huge cheater and that she divorced him. sad

Andre Simon Anderson (Andre Cymone)

He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Fred Anderson, a musician, and Bernadette, a social worker. Cymone was the youngest of six children.

The thirteen-year-old Prince ...nt's house. "I was constantly running from family to family," Prince has said. "It was nice on one hand, because I always had a new family, but I didn't like being shuffled around. I was bitter for a while, but I adjusted."

Andre -- whose father had played bass in the Prince Rogers Band -- says that although the family was poor, Prince "dug the atmosphere. It was freedom for him." There wasn't enough money to buy records, but there was a family fr... few songs. The studio they picked was called Moon Sound.

Jody Watley married Andre Cymone in 1991. The union was made public in 1995, when media outlet caught wiff of the legal separation. Jody Watley wasn't allowed to discuss their relationship and or marriage. Watley and Cymone had two...rn in 1992.
