Grafitti Bridge - Yay or Nay?

I'm thinking of getting this album. I have a friend who is a huge Prince fan, who said this album is wack and he was very dissapointed in it when it came out. What do you guys think? I guess this album is considered to be the beginning of the end for the Purple one but I like Thieves in the Temple. Is it worth checking out?

Don't make it first on your shopping list, but if you have all the preceeding albums, go for it, why not.

It's a brilliant album and when you programme your stereo or mp3 player to play just the Prince songs, you realize that was Prince's last piece of brilliant music before he got to The Rainbow Children.

It's cool thathe put Mavis, George and the others on there but I wish it was just a solo prince album. It contains my three most favourite Prince tracks: Joy in Repitition, The Question of U and Theives In The Temple.

The crap can never take away from the amazing Prince songs. Remove most of the filler and it is 5 Star.

The man's last truly fantastic album.

If you ignore the guest tracks and focus strictly on the Prince tracks, it's a creative, quirky and fun trip. And I love the whimsical atomsphere that the album revels in - very cool.

So yes, I say "Yay!"

I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

Big Yay : just ignorre tracks by the related artists.... (those performed by The Time are very bad).

the Prince tracks are no less than fantastic.

Remember to buy the 8 minutes extended version / 12 inch / CD single of Thieves In The Temple.

This 12 inch is absolutely stunning. cool

I listened to some samples and I think you might be right about skipping the guest featured tracks. They mostly sound weak to me. I'm gonna just get the Prince songs. Plus that album is very long. I don't have the attention span for really long albums.

Depends on the price and circumstance. I got my copy for $5 at a used record store, so know that.

It's a good album. Easily though the weakest of his film "soundtracks." I do agree with others who complain that it suffers from not being enough Prince, all that so no need to go into deep detail of what others already pointed out. Though honestly I enjoyed the Prince tracks with Clnton and Staples, because he's obviously using those productions as an excuse to openly nerd out with some of his idols. So that was cool.

Anyway, "Elephants & Flowers" is awesome. Strip down! Strip down! OK Prince...

But took me a long time to get into "Thieves in the Temple." Used to leave cold until subsequently I've grown to appreciate it.

One petty complaint: "Tick Tock Bang" is one of those tracks that unfortunately never could live up to such an awesome track title. Oh well, it happens.

Get the album but for the love of god do not watch the film!

I owned the album for years and thought good of it, then unfortunately saw the movie and urgh it forever ruined my initial good impression of the record.

Whenever I hear the songs now my mind associates them w visuals from that horrible, embarrassingly bad movie! Yup... It's not one u wanna remember, trust me. wink

Everyones mentioned the good songs on it... It's worth it for those alone.
My own fave? Can't Stop This Feeling I Got. Looooove that song.

Album yay, movie nay.

Funny I was the reverse: Saw that trainwreck of a movie. (catch the Siskel/Ebert review sometime on Youtube. More entertaining than that vanity flop.) But eh, liked some of the tracks and well, I'm a fan. What can I say? I'm a completist freak.

But yeah, that movie blows.

I like the album and agree with other posters on here regarding skipping the filler tracks.

My fav songs are New Power Generation, Question of u and Tick, Tick Bang (awesome song!)

I actually really like the film for the same reasons, just forward wind past the filler stuff.

Plus Prince is very cute and whimsical in it...

Shut up already, damn.

Live this album, but I agree with most of the posts. None of the other artists should have been on there.

I really like the vibe of the songs. They all sound like Prince is just having fun.

Elephants and Flowers is one of my favs ever!!

And as everyone has such a strong opinon about the film, I have just bought it from amazon for £1.99 to form my own. (Also had to buy Rave DVD, again only £1.99, just because it was described as the last time he did the splits!!! Good enough reason for me!!)

I think every prince album is worth checking out. As for GB, I think it has aged considerably well... It was not such a good album (by prince's standards) at the time of release, but after 21 years it really sounds good! Just my opinion, though...

Yay!! Definitely worth getting. I have loved this since it was released. Yeah, kinda wish there were just Prince songs on there and the title track is horrible...but the highs are incredibly high so get it and enjoy. If you like his other stuff you'll like this.

You should be able to find the major releases either used or on closeout at a rock bottom price. There's usually a surplus of them, so for a few bucks why not....Otherwise it's a nay. Whatever you do though, do not play Round and Round backwards, or it may have irreversible damage long term. On the universe.

In my opinion, some truly great Prince songs are on it (barring the title track) but as an album it's almost unlistenable from start to finish as is...
