Prince is he still a "prolific" song writer (quality albums / music) what about the future 2012 ?

Would you "define" Prince as PROLIFIC these years,

a word often used to describe "his purple highness" in the 1980s/ 1990s --- ??

If Prince can't do better than these:

Newpower Soul

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

Musicology

3121

Planet Earth

20Ten

would you still define him as "prolific".. in 2012 question

Prince is turning 54 this summer.

He is an older man now, not that prolific anymore imo, and not that original as a "quality album artist".

Or is he.. are you still optimistic for the future in Prince land.. question

I did not mention "The Rainbow Children" and "LotusFlower/ MPLS" as they are actually not that bad, a little better than those mentioned above...

Maybe these 2 albums gives reason to hope for another great album. question

Are you satisfied: with the albums Prince has delivered the past (many) years.. question

Well we need to get a handle on the meaning of the word "prolific." It has nothing to do with quality.

pro·lif·ic

[pruh-lif-ik] Show IPA
adjective
1.
producing offspring, young, fruit, etc., abundantly; highlyfruitful: a prolific pear tree.
2.
producing in large quantities or with great frequency; highlyproductive: a prolific writer.
3.
profusely productive or fruitful (often followed by in or of ):a bequest prolific of litigations.
4.
characterized by abundant production: a prolific year for tomatoes.

If Prince continues to churn out an album a year (or close to it) then I think he is still being fairly prolific, especially compared to most older artists who struggle to release an album every five years.

Prolific indeed!

Eric Leeds once told me that for each song published there are about three or four in the vault. eek

Sometimes - a long time ago - we got albums like Crystal Ball (5 CDs) and Emancipation (with 3 CDs). And once in a while we get two (Lotusflow3r).

However, one a year is a rhythme I got used to over the last couple of years ...

But now ... where's the 2011 album? sad *snif*

Yeah, he is definitely still prolific

2001: The Rainbow Children + The NPGMC Songs

2002: One Nite Alone...

2003: Xpectation

2003: N.E.W.S.

2004: The Chocolate Invasion

2004: The Slaughterhouse

2004: Musicology

2006: 3121

2007: Planet Earth

2009: Lotusflow3r

2009: MPLSound

2010: 20Ten

Now, as for quality.. as I already said and got attacked for in another thread multiple other threads, I prefer a lot of Prince's music from the last 20 years to a lot of the 80s music.

The Rainbow Children, One Nite Alone..., 3121, Planet Earth and Lotusflow3r are some of my favorite albums.

Now, I am 19 and been a fan only 4 1/2 years, so that may be why I feel that way. Most people seem to think so, anyway.

I'm not kissing Prince in the 80s' ass; I don't think everything was perfect back then. I think Prince has matured as a person, and improved as an instrumentalist, lyricist and vocalist, and I'm quite pleased with most of his 'recent' albums.

I don't like all recent Prince albums, though. I'm not really a fan of "MPLSound" or "20Ten".. they sound like lame attempts at sounding '80s' again.

Then obviously Prince can do better than those albums you listed, if you think "Lotusflow3r" was bettter.

Yes, I still have hope that Prince will make another great album. If nothing else, he surely has to have some great stuff in the vault that we've never heard before.

What do I expect from Prince in 2012? Nothing. One thing that's remained the same is that Prince is unpredictable, and that he rarely keeps his word. So there is no telling how long the 'writing/recording rehab' will go on for, or if/when there'll be another album. Being that he's never went two years without an album, that's reason to expect new music this year. Will it be good? Who knows? People thought Prince 'lost it' in the late 90s, then "The Rainbow Children" came out and people called it a classic. So, I'm sure he is capable of another great album.

IMO, he does better when he's trying something new. TRC & Lotusflow3r are quite unlike anything he's done before. so I hope he'll give up the 80s throwback dance music and take his music in a new direction.

You're cheating a bit with your total. Those two albums were primarily made up of NPGMC era tracks. I think that "The Dance" was the only "new" song although many of the others were slightly different/longer than the originally released NPGMC versions.

Arguably C-Note could be counted as an album.

Yeah, I knew that. I originally listed 'Chocolate' and 'Slaughterhouse', then remembered there were a bunch of songs given to the NPGMC not released on any album/compilation. There were non-album NPGMC/3121.com songs released from 2002-2007 too, I think

I considered listing 'C-NOTE', 'One Nite Alone... Live!', etc.. but figured those wouldn't really count as they're both live albums.

Prince is indeed prolific! I think Prince is very much involved in the creative Process, and the fact that he takes his time with something unexpected is what leave a lot room for success!

Seeing as he's taken some time off releasing albums, I think then next one is something to expect! I can't wait to lay my hands on what's next! smile

- If it depended on me, Prince would release more ´artsy´ albums like the ones mentioned, and I would love to have a power trio album (with maybe an organ).

Prince is 1 of if not the most prolific writer's, and I also think this is a separate issue compared 2 how people subjectively feel about his sound.

I love:

3121

Planet Earth

20Ten

and would add LotusFlower in there as well.

As we know, Prince has fans with a diverse taste in grooves, and in different ways, he satisfies all of us, especially those who dig his live sound

cool
