It was this little quirky gem being played on the radio that got me into his music.
And it was this video that made me absolutely fascinated by him not know that LRC song and this video was by the same artist. Reading some music mag one day I shocked to see 1999 and LRC was by the same person by some guy called Prince. Decided to investigate.
So I bought this. That was it...it blow me over sideways...that changed everything.

can't say much for the time (i was 4) - my big bro got me into Prince a decade later, I gave him the CD for Christmas a couple years after that (it was the one P cd he didn't own).
I had no idea it was the anniversary - i was just sat on a train thinking about unforgivingly bass heavy snare drums!
BOOM! and/or OOF!
Cx
just imagine: if Prince was bezzie mates with George Lucas they could have Photoshopped the Nazi Skull n Bones insignia on the leggie blond lass's head gear! (1999 video)
and DAMN, i thought it was to the day but i only just read the OP fully)
November you say. Can't wait! [Edited 1/4/12 17:36pm]

If Iran leaders keep acting crazy they are going to turn 2012 into the song of 1999!

Honey, you ain't the only one! But remember, we grow "better with time." And I don't care what anyone says, I love that song! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Yeah, that really makes me feel old!
I remember when I was a 15 year old kid in 1987 and the Sgt. Pepper's album turned 20 years old. There was a special on the television and I remember it all seemed lightyears away to me, sooooo incredibly old and long ago.
I can only imagine what today's kids will think of the year 1982. Great album though, 1999!!! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

This album "1999" was very important to PRINCE, he was the first major black artist to have premiere with a music video - on MTV:
I have no idea why Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" (premiere in march 1983) always gets the credit as the first major Black artist's video on MTV, because that is not fact:
the facts tells something different: Prince was on MTV before Michael Jackson !
Prince's "1999" music video had premiere on MTV in december 1982, according The Vault book from Uptown.
16. December 1982:
"Billie Jean" was indeed the first music video from MJ's "Thriller" album ("The Girl Is Mine" the leading single from 1982 had no music video), "Billie Jean" had premiere on MTV march 10 1983.
WikiP: "March 10 – MTV airs the video to Michael Jackson's song "Billie Jean" for the first time. The video is the first by a black artist to gain heavy airplay on MTV", link: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ion#Events
However:
Same month, march 1983: Prince's second video from the 1999 album: "Little Red Corvette" had premiere on MTV.
So in fact Prince was the first major black artist. Not the other way around,
in other words Michael Jackson wasn't "paving the way for" Prince and his "Purple Rain" album, cuz Prince's music videos were there already with the "1999" album, (the 2 videos to "1999" and "Little Red Corvette").
Note: we are talking about debut videos airing on MTV, Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" album did not get any premiere play in 1979, because of the fact that MTV wasn't launched until august 1981,
MTV Yearbook 1982 & 1983: [img:$uid]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/ecnirp2004/1999MTV.jpg[/img:$uid] Prince - "1999", premiere december 1982 on MTV.
Michael - "Billie Jean", premiere march 1983.
Both MJ and Prince were phenomenal artists back in 1982-83-84,
both "Thriller" and "Purple Rain" were record breaking album in many ways, "Thriller" the vbest selling album ever, and "Purple Rain" winning an Oscar, and simultaneously a number 1 hit single, number 1 hit album and a number 1 hit movie all at the same time, not done since The Beatles.
but the first major black artist who had a breakthrough on MTV was: Prince.

^ the "famous" eye-label to the 2-LP vinyls of "1999".... extremely cool if you ask me.
These LP labels are also included on the 2011 re-release of this 2-LP vinyl "1999".
Later the album pic is used on the "Chaos & Disorder" album:
