So what's your favorite song and album? And why? What's your least favorite song and album and why?

Guidelines: Studio releases from 1978 - 2001 only and songs that Prince was the original singer (example-Prince singing Nothing compares 2U isn't applicable).

Why only up to 2001?

I'm going to ignore that guideline.

Favorite Song: Sometimes It Snows In April

Why: I can relate to it. It makes me sad and happy.

Favorite Album: Emancipation

Why: About 15 songs I love; 30 I like - that's more than any other Prince album. I'm not really sure if that's actually my favorite album - I've never loved any Prince album start to finish, so I just picked the album with the largest number of high points.

Least Favorite Song: Rich Friends

Why: The lyrics, music, vocals all = ill

Least Favorite Album: The Black Album

Why: Not memorable for me. I rarely feel the desire to listen to it. Don't hate it, though.

Why only up to 2001?

Well after 2001 Prince started releasing more songs via other outlets that not all fans were are prevy too. Internet, The celebration and concerts. And I was going to address in a separate topic that period.

I had stated before in another reply and will repeat. I truly think Sometimes It Snows In April is one Prince's best compositions. PERIOD. As sad as it is, it is such a beautiful song.

With regards to emancipation. Truly his magnus opus. With lyrics like "Desparate is the day that is tomorrow...for those who do not know the time has come." and "Put down the Needle, Put down the spoon." Curious Child, Dream about you, Sex In the Summer. This set has it all. I don't think anyone will ever realize what the purple yoda created here. If Prince had been blind (ala Stevie Wonder) - everyone would have vehemently shouted "Genius!!" "Prince's Songs in the Key of Life" and given him Grammys and AMA's.

Best Album: Purple Rain

Reason: the only album with more than 5 of my favorite songs!

Best Song: Something in the Water -not the one on the album

Reason: when you hear it..it's like heaven!!!!

Worst Song: Rich Friends

Reason: ...seriously, it shows Prince's age lol

Worst Album: Come

Reason: none of the songs really stand out to me shrug

Purple Rain is somewhat iconic in my listening of Prince cd's. It is excellent but with the wrold now finally catching up and this cd being played to death-I have developed an adversion to it sans When Doves Cry.

I have never heard any other versions of Something In the Water but will say this was my favorite track along with Lady Cab Driver and DMSR.

Come cd is okay - I enjoyed the remix of Letitgo. I played the %$^%#%$# out of that in my car.

Favorite song: Crystal Ball

Because it's the most crazy song of all.

Least favorite song: Adore

Because it's an insincere love song. It's the song that guys sing to girls they wanna have sex with. Not the ones they are in love with. I think it's foolish to consider this song 'romantic'.

Favorite album: doubt between Sign "O" The Times, Dirty Mind and 3121

Be cause those three have a perfect theme, perfect mood, perfect harmonies, perfect everything... except Adore. And Slow Love. barf

Least favorite album: Newpower Soul

Because it's generic soul and R&B. I like Come On, The One and Wasted Kisses though.

lol I've always considered Adore as one of the most beautiful love songs. "U could burn up my clothes, smash up my ride! Well, maybe not the ride.." <- He didn't have to say that phrase, but he chose to be honest.(and humorous!) There are thousands of love songs out there that talk about how they're so in love, that they'd do anything for their lover. But I personally don't know any guy who's ok with me smashing up his ride even when they're madly in love (my bf would kill me lol)...So I appreciate the honesty, it actually makes me believe the phrase "Until the end of time, I'll be there for you" more lol

And I know this sounds a bit weird, but I love how he never says "I love you" in that song, claiming that the word "love" is too weak to define. Sometimes I think the word "love" is way overrated and overused. Yeah sure the guy says he loves you, but he'll say that to his mom or his new vehicle too, though it's different kind of "love". I like how he found different word to describe his feelings, and at the end of the song, I understand that "adoring someone" is really, loving someone selflessly. Just my opinion.

Oh and that's just the lyrics. I love everything else about that song as well

Favorite Song - Forever In My Life - This is the song I want playing in the background when and if I ever get married. And the live version (from the SOTT concert movie) still gives me chills.

Favorite Album - Sign O' the Times - How could you not love this album? This album from beginning to end is just incredible. I'm listening to "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" as I type this LOL!!

Least Favorite Song - Future Baby Mama - Why Prince, Why? Just couldn't get into it...no matter how hard i tried.

Least Favorite Album - Don't have one. I can always find at least one or two songs I like on any album he released..

Favourite album; varies. Mostly hops between Parade and Sign "O" The Times.
Why? Cuz both are perfection in their own way. Where Parade is a total trip, the original high, SOTT was more of a hip grinding, sexy thing. Both are loved MORE becuz they spawned the most sexy Prince tours and had the best tie-ins when it comes to art-design, photography, extended versions and b-sides. In short; these albums and their era's are Prince at his most daring.

Favourite song; this even varies more, but the one that gets the most play is the ORIGINAL Joy In Repetition; the one from the bootleg with the original intro. That lone beat kick starting those following amazing minutes of genius showcases what Prince does best when on his best; wow.

Least favourite album; definately The Rainbow Children. I loved how he shortly after played a song called Xenophobia, cuz to me this is the worst side of religion. People hail it as a 'return' musically, but I cannot remotely like any of it with those horrid lyrics showcasing Prince at his worst; his earlier anxieties filled with distrust and hate, brought to you by a collection of the silliest words he ever sang. Except maybe the word 'baklava'.

Least favourite song; At the moment Hot Summer. It totally sums up why Prince needs a fucking break.

Truly an impossible task, I'm looking at his body of work in my iTunes (yes I also have everything on Records, Cassette and CD for you purists) and almost every album has made a significant impact in my life and my memories are linked to the album from that year.

I have to say "Batman" has and will always have a special significance for me, as it was what made me into a fan - after hearing this in 89 I immediately bought everything he had done and listened to nothing else (seriously) for the next 15 years, and I can honestly say that not a day has gone by in the last 22 years without me listening to at least one Prince track.

Favorite song for a long long time was "The Cross" I'm not in anyway religious but the way the song starts so soft and quite and then rocks out is amazing and the lyrics are sung with such a raw passion.
I could list about 10 or 20 songs that are my favourite but if I was held at gunpoint I would have to say... Bambi. I saw him do this live in Manchester 91 and I was blown away.
Album choice is a bit easier (but not much), it has to be "The Black Album", I discounted it for a long time but with every listen it gets better and better, only one track is skipped - When 2 R in Love for obvious reasons, the rest is pure Prince in his funkiest, darkest and most humorous period.
Worst is a bit cruel and I feel bad for having to say this as I am extremely grateful for each and every track. The album I never really play is "Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic" this has maybe one good track and I hate Prince doing covers.
If I'm sticking to the rules then worst song or track, as its not really a song has to be "Orgasm", reasons are its just embarrassing for everyone involved.
Do or do not, there is no try...

I agree with what you said about the song boxed but it's not my least favorite - I actually still love it. I think it's got a great melody, vocal performance, etc... but the lyrics don't sound like someone in love.

"I was rappin' til the sun came up/Tellin' U just how fine U look/In a word, U were sex"

Sounds like someone trying to get sex. I'd never sing something like that to my lover..

Okay - @Babyjubilation - After reading your reply and rereading Emancipation89's - I had to go back and listen to Adore. I began to drift back thinking about slow dancing with my girlfriend at home. I guess I had forgotten how powerful and open these lyrics are. He's not singing a song to us...He's "rappin" to her. The One and only. "Tears of Joy pouring down on us." "They you know you are my fix" And for me the best being "Do you know what I'm saying to you this evening? Try, try ta say. Just trying to say That until, until the end of time. I'll be there for you." With all the claps and fingersnaps heard in the background. And the way the song changes at "Till the end of time, I'll be there for you." As the song closes (or appears to) it rebuilds - "Be with me darling til the end of all time. I'll give you my heart. I'll give you my mind. I'll give my body. I'll give you my time." This may be the best love song Prince has ever written. And no one else can ever touch it...to the end of all time.

Forever in my life kicks (the late JFK jr actually played this at his wedding). I love background contrary lyrics. "U can make right" I alos love the guitar closing (ala Prince using his riff from When we're Dancing Close and Slow. And just as it fades, he starts to jam. The film version takes it to another level. Only Prince can make excellent better.

Dorothy Parker was the hidden jam. Love it too.

Anyone who dosen't like Adore, to me is not a true fan, I mean honestly talk about extreme with cream. What is there not to like, not every song has to be a sincere and true love offering. We all like it because its well written, funky, groovy and a lot of fun.

I know I am being harsh, but honestly this cat should turn his/her card in.

I hear what you are saying. For me, I hear Adore as what a man would say, has said (I'm guilty) and will say again to a woman that just enveloped him. Yes there is a copulative tone, but isn't that an aspect of love. I mean, Prince isn't being redundant as he and other song writers would state. Here he's (Prince) is telling it all - of how this woman has him open and devoted. I really wish I could find out who/what inspired hime to write this song.

Aside from the last two, which I think are decent, those are all pretty good picks. I think I'd pick 'Animal Kingdom' as the worst of your picks, but 'make yo mama happy' and 'tell me how u...' are pretty damn bad too.

I would die 4U. The long version I would (and I don't think I'm alone here) would lip sync as one of my closing numbers at home. I love the opening drum back and forth between Prince and Sheila E. and the way Wendy comes in with the guitar.

Rave is one of the worse creations from the hand of Prince. At what point did he say _"Hey this jams, I'm putting it out." Listening to this (20ten and the newer stuff makes one question, "Is this the same person who released Dirty Mind, Controversy, Purple rain?

favorite song: adore because it's one of the first prince songs i remember loving and it's just perfect from beginning to end, imo. great lyrics, beautifully sung and great music cool

favorite album: sign o the times because i just love every song on it and i can still play it (after about a million times) and still love every moment touched

least favorite song: pheromone because it annoys the hell out of me. the lyrics are just weird (i like freaky, just not my cup of tea) and the chorus stinks.

least favorite album: i wanna say 20ten. i LOVE sticky like glue and future soul song but most of the rest is just meh bored2.

Adore - "...well, maybe not the ride." Such an incredible song. I really agree with you for the way Prince sings it never going over the top.

20ten - I concur, not very good. I think Prince was trying to make music in the anticipation of what music may sound like six to eight years from now (hey, Im trying to give him some credit) but over all really eally bad cd.

yah, if he would'a started screaming and shit, it would'a killed it lol

not bad, just kinda boring and yeah... well, bad lol

Yes okay, point taken, its about non commital fxxking, but is that a valid excuse to make it his WORST song, I mean really he has hundreds of lesser songs about fxxking around and you are saying Adore is worse than Da Da Da and Mr Happy, Jughead, Wedding feast and truly bad songs like that. I can understand its a lyrcial content puts u off, but Prince is mostly an oversexed satyr to start off with. Thats why myself and many others love him.

Most people's picks for least favorite song amaze me. One other person said 'Rich Friends', nobody said 'Purple & Gold' or 'Wedding Feast', nobody said 'Da Da Da' ... yet people bring up 'Adore', 'Diamonds and Pearls' etc.. it is amazing to me.

I love the song, but I just don't see it as the ultimate love song, when it sounds to me like Prince is more horny than in love. I don't have a problem with sex songs, though they're not my favorite, I just don't think you should say things like 'In a word - you were sex' when you're trying to explain what someone means to you, unless sex is all they mean to you.

This question is pretty awkward considering we can only use releases from 1978 - 2001.

Nevertheless..I'll do it anyways.(Just for the heck of it..lol)

Best Prince Song: Power Fantastic (It's just THAT song that explains 'THIS'. It's dreamy, very beautiful and just one of the most amazing things I ever heard. It summarizes why I admire Prince and his work.

Best Album: LOVESEXY (The positivity in this album is sexual, quirky, loud, and just beautiful! Everything about it comes together and makes LOVESEXY really make no sense, yet have a clear meaning. I would also have to say 'SOTT' runs very close with 'Lovesexy'. The pattern he was on just makes no sense yet it does? lol

Least Favorite Song: 'Everyday Is A Winding Road' It's HORRIBLE! O my goodness, it's a mess that does nothing and goes no where. WHAT WAS HE THINKING? That's just it! He wasn't thinking..lol

Least Favorite Album: It's hard to judge his albums as a whole, because for me at least 2 songs make the album worth a listen? I guess I will have to go with NewPower Soul? But I love half the album, the rest is just -_-

Haha

Best Prince album: Purple Rain. It has all the elements that I enjoy about Prince (tight album, all killers no fillers, variety, visionary production). Even if I wasn't a Prince fan, I would own this album because it's just the best album of the 80s (or at least the mid-80s)

Best Prince song: 1999. Can't really say why. This song "IS" Prince. Can't really say more.

Worst Song: too many. That's one of the fascinating things about Prince. He has like 200 amazing songs, but also 50 (or more) pathetic songs which, nevertheless, are so bad/freaky/misguided/wtf that are also worth checking out. Prince has released +50 bad songs, probably, but only 8-10 truly boring tracks.

Least favorite album: NEWS. Back in 2003, I thought it was the end. Prince doing instrumental jazz albums???? Wow. What a nightmare. And the album is just forgettable. Nothing special. Just a second-rate Madhouse-like album released by Prince, just as NPS was a second-rate NPG album released by Prince.

I took it in the context of that one phone conversation.

She have at one point meant just sex, but she's obviously become much more.

He's highlighting the contrast in how he views her.

Never looked at it that way; perhaps I need to listen again and really analyze the lyrics. I'm usually more focused on the singing and melody with this song.

Best Album>> Sign o the Times. Hands down, the absolute best package he has ever delivered. I wish he could equal that genuis level just one more time before either he or I die. It's like a trip into another world where Jim Morrison's laws prevail.

Best Song>> Condition of the Heart/ Anna Stesia / Housequake. I have a three way tie here. This was really tough for me. I imagined, if all Prince songs had only ten seconds before they were blown to bits, which one would I run and save. It would have to be one of these three, whichever was closest.

Worst Album>> Rave. Without a doubt the worst of the worst. I did buy it, I did regret it. I'd rather hear someone take a doody (Purple Rain came in a close second. Shocked? Everytime I tell someone I like Prince they say, yeah I love Purple Rain and begin to sing a little of it. They have killed my joy in this album. They have killed it.)

Worst Song>> Scarlet Pussy/ Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Two way tie here. What the Hell Prince? It's one thing to write these, it's another to sit back and say, Hey that's good enough to go on an album.

We are all so full of doody here
