Since I was driving home and listening to TRC but when I first heard mellow I kept playing it without listening to the words until the ending caught my attention

As someone who got to listen to his catalogue after all the recent artists, I don't find his lyrics to be that shocking. I guess during the 80s they could've been very controversial. But even the songs that a lot of people think he was only trying to "shock" the audience with, he's actually singing about the real world we're living in today so to me he's someone who's keeping it real. That's why I don't understand when people say "oh he did this only to be controversial," because I think it just comes naturally for him..And I must say songs that have funny/dirty lyrics are the most catchy songs of his But songs like Circle of Amour or Others Here With Us do make me go

I have a totally different view. To me, the most shocking lyrics are not the sexually explicit ones but the fundamentalistic religious ones since he became a Jehovah's Witness. Hey, as long as we have two adults they can groove and groove until the earth moves for all I care, but when I heared him talk on Rainbow Children about a woman in subjection to a man, that was a shock to me! This was not the Prince I used to know. On Musicology, he still had not gotten it out of his system: Didn't her mama teach her better? Dressed like that somebody's gonna get her Whaddaya saying here? If a girl dressed in sexy clothes gets raped, it's her own fault? It is one of the reasons What Do You Want Me to Do is my least favorite track on this otherwise excellent LP. This is a side of the man that I really don't like. | |
