Does Prince make you wish you could play guitar?

Some of these Prince solos make me wish I could just pick up a guitar and go to town that effortlessly.

Any of you start playing cuz of listening to Prince?

Prince is AMAZING on guitar a lot of the time and I have played guit for many years now and can play his stuff quite well. I don't aim to imitate, but on guitar I am highly influenced by his style, BB King's and Frank Zappa's...there are some things I still haven't gotten worked out yet, though...a few technicalities which I almost don't want to crack, lest I sound exactly like him.

I can play, very well too biggrin

I did start playing partially coz of Prince... and other guitar heroes like Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd, and Eddie Hazel from Funkadelic, and of course Jimi Hendrix etc.

I started playing about 14 years ago on a cheap acoustic, moved to electric as quick as I could. Never bothered with lessons - I could already read music which was handy and I understood a lot of music theory already. But basically my first year of learning guitar was me playing Prince cassettes (stop, play, rewind, stop play... etc) and practising some of my favourite solos over and over until I got them perfect. Now when I listen to solos from Purple Rain, or Let's Go Crazy, or I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man... I don't even hear the notes anymore, I just see what shape my fingers form on the fretboard biggrin

It was weird for me... I was a kid mostly into hiphop and soul, so being a lead guitarist was a weird skill to have biggrin This prompted me to learn keys, bass and drums too - but I only ever got very competent on guitar and bass. I used to make a few quid as a session player in my spare time too, and as an improv jazz guitarist... and I taught bass for while too.

Sad to say that I rarely play nowadays. Because I spend so much time on computers, I had some serious problems with my wrists (and still do). Faced with the prospect of losing my livelihood, I stopped playing guitar. Anyway I wasn't a great musician but I am a great computer scientist so I made the right decision. I do miss playing guitar though!

omg cool, Ian! shame about not playing anymore, though.

a session player, eh? got any recordings of this one could hear?

I played in jazz groups too for $ but I also doubled on alto sax. and i had my own band in which i sung, guitared and wrote a few years ago.

I can also play drums at about the same accomplishment as prince (i can do most of what he can), though i don't own a drumkit (it's going to be one of the first things i buy when i get the money and the right living conditions). i can play bass, too, but not nearly as well as prince...i'm not good at slap at all, but i'm not just about roots and fifths, either. i can play keys, too...but just basic shit.

ok...i better turn the wank machine off, now. wink

Everything I learned, I learned from Prince first, Stevie Ray second, and Keith Richard third.

Like some of the other org musicians here, I also learned bass, drums, keys and whatever else, out of inspiration from him. The first time I saw that P did EVERYTHING on his wreckas, I knew what I wanted to be.

And, well, I'm not Prince, but I love what I do and I can put out a good groove on a good night.

Yes, but not solely because of listening to Prince. His SOTT/Lovesexy area, especially "het paard" aka 'small club" helped me inspire me to do so.

Actually he's the reason I started playing guitar. After I saw him play in Purple Rain, I had to get a guitar. The first couple of years were pretty hard. Eventually it got easier and hanging around the music shop downtown for days on end didn't hurt. They'd let me play all day (drums, piano, bass, and I'd watch and pickup all the things people would do when they walked in and played.
Prince is also the one who got me on to Carlos Santana worship then that was it for me, I was hooked for life.nod

Prince was definitely one of my greatest inspirations to start playing. 17 years later, he's a great inspiration to keep on playing. What fascinates me is, I can IMITATE a lot of the things he plays pretty well. But how does he come up with them?! So many ideas... When I started out, I was inspired by things like the end to Let's Go Crazy. Nowadays, I dig his rhythm playing and little funky or jazzy licks most.

It's funny, in a way, Prince is the reason I play guitar today. I was a self taught church organist. Then Lenny Kravitz came along with his guitar driven organ backing music. At first I was drawn in because of the B-3, but when I paid attention to his riffs I was hooked. And we all know who influenced Lenny, so I started to realize what Prince was doing on the guitar was amazing. The thing I love is no matter what kind of album Prince is doing, you can be sure his guitar lines are to be respected.

I guess I picked up the (electric) guitar because of him. But unfortunately I'm not very good at hearing, I mean listen to stuff and then find out how to play it. That's what I'll have to practise!
I also sooo wish I could play piano! All you (almost) multiintrumentalists make me jealous!

GET OUT!

Yes, Prince was my Inspiration. To name it, it was the solo on "If I Had A Harem" on the Lovesexy Live-video that made me want to have a guitar. Unfortunately, playing guitar wasn´t as easy as it looked on video. I´m still not a good guitar-player, but I do have a Cloud Guitar (but not an original one, just a japanese imitation which is fine anyway).
See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...
