Purple Music.... pay your dues to this classic boot!

Purple Music biggrin

From the very first beat of the Linn1 drum machine, down to the vocals this track is dripping with funk! headbang

Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
The Purple Music does the same 2 my brain
and I'm high!

The mega-catchy bass line do do do, do do do accompanied by the low key and very, very funky guitar scratches up and down the fretboard make this an all time classic Prince track, imho. music

Show your love! biggrin

Very cool song.
I've had a crappy version of this song since 86 (?), but have been looking for a crystal clear version for years (and found it).

It is still one of my favourite outtakes!

Freaker

yeah this would be cool if it was on 1999.
Its got a good message and also has his humour. The beat is also very addictive. I also like that funky introductory sniff! LOL

For those of you who haven't heard it it's a
1999 (album, not year) era outtake in a similar
vein to 'All The Critics Love U In New York'

Is there a really good quality version available, because mine has fluffy sounding drums but has some good highs on the vocals...

...much the same for everyone I'm guessing.

If you think you have the full track then check the length. I had the version on Jewel Box for years before I realised is was only half the song. Does anybody know the length?

Great song smile Sounds similar to All the Critics Love You in New York, to me.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

I would LOVE for Prince to release tracks like this as bonus tracks to remastered albums. Imagine 1999 with a bonus disc including:

Extra Loveable
Chocolate
Moonbeam Levels
Purple Music
Turn It Up
Do Yourself a Favour
No Call U
Baby, You're a Trip
Something in the Water (alternate)
Delirious (extended)
DMSR (remix)

The full length version is 10:36
The best quality version I've heard comes from an old Thunderball boot called 'Cosmos'. The version on 'The Work' is the same as this. The drums are very slightly muffled, but apart from that it's clear and bright.

You're right, 'Cosmos' has the best version I've heard so far. But this is version #2. There is a slightly longer version of 'Purple Music' doing the rounds.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
