I'd say it was about right. They're some amazing guitarists that Prince is beating o the list.
I find it strange that Joe Satriani didn't make the top 100.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Jimmy and Eddie the best two for me.

Yeah I thought Gary Moore would have been on it too.

Did they have Satriani or Vai on the list? I am not a huge fan of either but no one can deny their talent or influence and its strange that they dont seem to be on there. Is Wes Montgomery on there?

Thanks for sharing - let me lift the info over here....
Prince #33:
He played arguably the greatest power-ballad guitar solo in history ("Purple Rain"), and his solo on an all-star performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" during George Harrison's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2004 had jaws on the floor. But he can also bring the nasty funk like Jimmy Nolen and Nile Rodgers (listen to the groove magic of "Kiss") or shred like the fiercest metalhead ("When Doves Cry"). Sometimes his hottest playing simply functions as background – see "Gett Off" and "Dance On." Prince gets a lot of Hendrix comparisons, but he sees it differently: "If they really listened to my stuff, they'd hear more of a Santana influence than Jimi Hendrix," he once told Rolling Stone. "Hendrix played more blues, Santana played prettier." To Miles Davis, who collaborated with the Purple One toward the end of his life, Prince was a combination of "James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye... and Charlie Chaplin. How can you miss with that?"
Key Tracks: "Purple Rain," "Kiss," "When Doves Cry"
btw: Great to see my fave David Gilmour rather high on this list at #14!

Saw Satch a couple of years ago. Even my wife enjoyed it. It's because unlike (nearly all) other shredders he has harmony and melody. Wouldn't really class him as a shredder though. He can play like that but chooses not to.
His mastery of the electric guitar is unquestionable though. Where was Mr May?

The again it says "great" not "best", "progressive", "harmonious", "technical" and so on.

Surely, Prince's solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is what finally got Rolling Stone to take notice.

Always With Me Always With You must be one of the most beautiful guitar tunes ever written.

Flying in a Blue Dream. I had tears in my eyes seeing him play it, mere feet in front of me.

Good shout. Do you think Prince could play "Satch Boogie"? Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Since Prince usually doesn't play stuff thats complicated, i think he would need some serious practice. Especially that tapping part. I dont think Prince practices two handed tapping and he would need to do that in order to play satch boogie.

That's pretty cool and well deserved. Prince is my favourite guitar player but is the solo in Purple Rain "arguably the greatest power-ballad guitar solo in history"?
Not sure. | |

Not. A. Fucking. Cat. In. Hell's. Chance.

And we all know what he's like with a whammy It really doesn't bare thinking about.

Sorry, but that list is ridiculous. I realize that it is subjective but some of the inclusions and exclusions make it lose all credibility.

There's no such thing as Greatest Guitarist of All Time.
There is only Favorite Guitarist of All Time.
This is true of any artistic endeavor.

Yes! Was not expecting to see Dance On to get a mention.

I'm not much for guitar polls but any poll with JIMI in the top spot is a welcome change. It looks like they were considering artistry, influence etc.., (which is fine) because Scotty Moore (Elvis' guitarist) technically wouldn't make the cut.

Prince should be higher on the list even on range alone.
There aren't many guitarists on that list adept in so many different genres. |

True!!! But it´s nice when people recognize that Eddie Van Halen is one of the real best And Prince should be in the top 20...and why is Lou Reed and Cobain in the list?? Where is Kirk Hammet?? James is on the list!! And NO Vernon Reid!!!
I´m no musician but I really don´t know why people like Clapton that much... nevertheless...a nice list!

Congrats on figuring it out Rollingstone. And in other news, the sky is blue.

I'm sure not. | |

I agree with that.
Some of his greatest playing is indeed happening 'in the background'. You have to listen to some of his songs on which that happens several times to realise how great a player he actually is.
The guitar work 'in the background' on a song like Positivity is simply breathtaking, and even a song that seems to be 'loathed' on the org, like Graffiti Bridge, has splendid guitar playing in the background.

It certainly is - after much prior cajoling I managed to get the organist at my wedding to play it (he couldn't see how it would work on the organ) as we walked back down the aisle and out of the church. I wanted to stick around and listen to see how far he got mimicking the guitar lead but duties meant I had to do groom stuff...
Anyway, these guitar lists do the rounds all the time and I was already wondering why I bothered with Rolling Stone when I got this issue. And- no Satch - that was my first 'search'. Boo.
