RESULT: Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (12 votes) - Diamonds & Pearls (25 votes)

I believe people see these two albums as Prince's most visible attempts to commercialise his sound and remain mainstream in the 90s.

Which album did you prefer? mr.green

Diamonds and Pearls.

I've hardly played Rave after about three months following its release. Still, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.

ditto.
D&P is actually one of my top fave Prince albums. Even for what are the obvious pop songs, they're great IMO. But the killa tracks are L4L, Thunder, Strollin, Daddy Pop and $DM2N.

Im actually gonna go for Rave. Diamonds and Pearls is just too lightweight for my liking. All the stuff he released as singles were great. Willing and Able was pretty nifty too but the rest was pure pap. Rave doesn't even feel like an album, more like a bootleg of unreleased tracks thrown together but theres better material on there. I cant quite explain it, it feels like more like a Prince album, albeir its not that great, The music is sometimes darker too which i like. D&P is just a complete sell out. Princes talents watered down for mass consumption.

Im always suprised at the bad coverage D&P gets on this forum. Its his joint second best album of the nineties (along with prince , the first being The Truth).

Whats good about this album is that after 5 years of making music on his own, he finally produced an album that had a band sound to it. Its got some stinkers on it (Push, Jughead), but all in all its a brilliant album.

Given all thats going on in the world at the moment, Im always coming back to money dont matter..., Diamonds & Pearls is one of his best melodies (although the lyrics are pretty naff), Strolling is a brilliantly laid back, and Gett Off is simply made by the "zipper" line.

It could have been better if hed included Open Book and Love, they will be done. I think he was simply trying to make a cohesive album again, something hed not done since Lovesexy.

For me Rave... has its moments but never really makes it as an album.

nod Couldn't agree more. Esp with Rosie on vox. I only wish I could've heard O+> before he took out her vocals. (i replace Push with Horny Pony on my mix and it makes an for even better album)

Diamonds and Pearls. Despite it's obvious commercial target, it's a cohesive, confident and natural sounding album. It features some great tracks too, and nothing so desperate as 'Baby Knows'.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

You mean a CRAP slide. That record is nothing more than a COASTER at my house.

I guess it has to do with when folks got into Prince. D&P seems to be a turning point from the old style into the new style... more rapping, more sampled loops, etc, which is ALL that Crap un2 the Crap Craptastic. So, if you dig that stuff, then you'll like Rave. If you got into Prince LONG before that style (like back when he PLAYED the keys instead of programming them, and his rap was ONLY on Irresistable Bitch) then, I think between the 2, D&P would get a more respect.

Gett Off IS tha bomb, and Thunder too. I'm sorry, but NOTHING on Rave comes close.

Gett Off is a joke, it was a joke when it first came out, it still is. It's a drum loop. Cream was a good idea, to do the Bolan thing, the rest of D&P is saccharine , silly and/or ridiculous
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

Just out of curiosity, cuz we've never talked about it that much, what is it about Rave that you like so much? Other than the title track, what do you feel are classic songs on there?

As for me, I pick Diamonds and Pearls. I don't care what anyone says, I still think it was a smart move. The look was great, the live band sound was great, the videos were great, the singles were great. I can only find one dud on the whole albuma and I don't mind the rapping at all. People praise Symbol, but that has just as much rapping. I don't and never will understand the backlash against this album.

Can I answer this?
"Silly Game" is a very nice & mellow uptempo ballad-like song.
"Wherever U go, Whatever U Do" is a beautiful breakup song.
"TGRTEBS" is a great R&B jam nana
"The Sun, the Moon and Stars" is visionary...tell me u cant picture a beautiful tropical island when it plays?
"Undisputed" is funky...w/out Chuck D it wouldve been betta.
"eye heart u but eye dont trust U anymore" is fabulously emotionally charged...I dont care what anyone says, u cant tell me it didnt sound like Prince wasnt gonna bust out crying as much as his voice was breaking on that track...truely a touching song sad

Don't get me wrong. I like Rave just fine. But I wanted to see what Moonbeam's thoughts were about this. To put the albums up against eachother, song by song or whatever to find out why he thinks Rave is so much better.

D&P I think it has a really fresh feel to it, despite the horrid production in parts. Rave really doesn't have one song that I could say I like- there are some that I enjoy (on and off), but none that I could unequivocally endorse. Besides, Insatiable is absolutely divine.
