Why am I listening to old Prince opposed to newly released prince??

I have ONA Boxset/Piano and Expectation, BUT, why am I listening more to old Prince? BTW, the old music is the unofficial songs like Chocolate, moonbeam levels etc. What's your opinion?

I've also got Prince's "newer" stuff, which I enjoy as well! But when I think about it.. 95% of the time I listen to Prince's older stuff and 5% I listen to his newer stuff ... I think TRC is great, everything Prince makes is great.. but I really miss the "old" Prince.. I dont know why really, coz he's still the same and his music is still great.. I guess I just miss the "dirty" songs wink .. He's still funky though!

I am also listening to old Prince. I am a huge R&B/funk fan and the new stuff just isn't as funky. I was just thinking the other day, I wish I could have seen Prince back when he was truly funky. Any concert I have attended he was either promoting Larry Graham and Chaka Khan or The Rainbow Children.

i've bought everything he's ever released. and i've gotten my hands on (downloaded, got the boot, or other) every other song i've ever read about. i never listen to the "new" prince stuff. "extraordinary" is the last song he put out (besides TRC "everywhere") that i listen to on the regular. Matter of fact I don't listen to anything that has NPG on it.

It's the same thing every time, whenever Prince releases
a new album, I start listening to the previous 2 releases
a lot.

I'm sure that once he anounces another new album is about
to drop [read: 7 months in Prince-speak] I'm gonna delve
up the Xpectation and One Nite Alone and TRC again.

as ya'll may awready know, i'm one of the resident old-skool prince song defenders. i have a copy of ona live that somebody burnt 4 me, and i've only listened 2 it about...oh, 3 times since i got it.

why? 4 some reason it don't move me as much as the older stuff does. i love the older stuff--nevermind the sexual content in some of the back catalogue, that ain't the main reason why. there's just somethin about p's earlier worx that i just love 2 bits...

...probably the messages he put out back then are a lot mo' easier 2 take than the current theo-craptik order stance that he currently has goin on. that, and some of the newer stuff is just a bore 2 me (watch, someone's gonna cyber-pop me upside the head with a copy of the prince album now lol).

PREACH! I got your back on this one! I'm all about old school Prince! I don't really know the new stuff. Classic Prince is what I grew up on. He was so edgy; that was new to me back then. And I sopped it all up with a biscuit, too! biggrin

Old school Prince rules!!!

Do that sexy dance, yo!

Maybe because its more upbeat then todays music he has made. Or maybe you can't get out of that era. lol I know the feeling. I miss the 80's terribly.

Could be alot of things.

For some of us, the old stuff benefits from it's ability to make you reminisce about the past. You don't just get the music, you also get the "what was I doing when I first heard this?" thoughts running through your head. By definition the new stuff can't give you that, yet.

Also, his style has evolved over the years and you just might not be digging where it's at right now. And for some people it takes a while to digest the new stuff. Personally, except for a handful of "instant classics", my favorite Prince songs usually took a while (sometimes years) for me too appreciate. Alot of the things I loved right away don't do anything for me now.

Prince's music never feels 'old'...
It always sounds right on time to me...headbang

I mix it around quite a bit...love the new stuff too.nod
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I mix it around listening to old, new, and in between. But in my opinion, it's easy to let old stuff take precedence. It already has it's hooks in you. A lot of music when it's new, takes time to get the most out of it. See what it's like five years from now as far as how often you listen to these now current releases.

Well, right now I'm listening to his old stuff ('78-'81). I like his newer stuff, I'm just an old school junkie, I tend to like artists' early stuff more(madonna, mj, janet), doesn't mean that it's bad, I just perfer older stuff.

YOU hit the nail on the head!

**OLD PRINCE MUSIC: was joyous and energetic and entertaining

**NEW PRINCE MUSIC: more about craftsmanship and sometimes musicianship

Which is more entertaining?

His NEW music is more "INTERESTING" than ENJOYABLE.

Proof?

Listen to ONAL: listen to how happy the audience is when they sing along to "Raspberry Beret". Listen to the audience response to "One Nite Alone"...there's your answer. The old stuff is joyous and energetic, the new stuff isn't.

Case closed.

Even though I have been a Prince fan since 1984,he diddn't mean as much to me than as now, I didn't get to see him in concert until Jam of The Year tour.
I really wish I could go back to around the year 1985 and attend all the concerts of all the years up until now.

I really enjoyed the ONA tour, but I'll take Prince back in 1986 shirtless and with long hair, over now with a boring suit and ugly short hair anyday.

I love it when he plays his old songs at the concerts.

Ok, Raspberry Beret was #2 on the Billboard Charts and was released like 18 years ago. Ya think the masses might be a little more familiar with those lyrics than "ONA"?
