Prince 'Clownin' an audience.

I was wonderning has anyone ever attended a Prince concert where Prince talked negatively about another city or where he 'clowned' the audience he was performing in front of ? If you have, what are your thoughts as to the reasons why.

Also for the people that have been to different Prince concerts with different demographics(one show mainly black, one show mainly white, ect), was there any difference in the way the crowd reacted to him?

I know there's people on here that have seen prince 10,20 plus times so i would like your imput.

As for me. I've seen Prince in concert 6 times, and in three different cities(Seattle, Fresno, San Francisco), and the only city he's ever talked smack about, or to, is Fresno.

I attended the 1999 concert in Fresno and even back then Prince clowned the Fresno audience for not being lively enough. I remember him making the comment, "Fresno, Ya'll Can't Hang !"

There's been a couple of instances where Prince clowned Fresno. In the late 1990's he did a non sellout show in Fresno and at the next city(Sacramento Ca), i heard he asked the audience if there was anybody from Fresno there and when he didn't hear any cheers he said, "GOOD"! .

Now Fresno is a good size city of 500,000 people but it still has a layed back feel and attitude(xcept for the gangs)and that's one of the reasons why the Prince crowds can seem a little mellow. The Van Halen crowds are crazy a **** but the people that like mature soul music, not so much. As far as that non sellout show. I think it was a championship football game or holiday which made a lot of people stay home. It's unfortunate that Prince 'caught feelings' and made the comment about Fresno to the Sacramento crowd though. The good thing is him and Fresno fell back in love on the Musicology tour. That show was packed and the crowd was loud. Prince seemed happy to be there. He did call them(us) a MTV generation crowd though.

When he said that i was like "Shoot, I ain't into that ****!"

My personal feelings is that the Sacramento thing was petty. You didn't sell out a venue, so what.

Prince knows he's bad, live and in the studio. He should always be secure in knowing that regardless of how many concert tickets he sells, his legacy is secure.

going to see him in ottawa in a couple weeks... i'll be surprised if he doesn't 'clown' the audience at that show... ottawa's a terrible place to play, very conservative folks that sit on their hands. should be interesting.

Sort of. I saw him in Irvine, and he said "last night we played in Hollywood and they sang really good except for this song"

then he played "One of Us"

A few months later I saw him in Oakland, and he kept coming over to our side of the stage and saying "i think the freaks are on this side!!"

Then he led us in a chant of "the Freaks on this side!!" (and Mad Sex, and I Like Funky Music...)

I talked to a friend who was also at the show the next day and she said "oh, you were on the side with the freaks" I think he really was being biased toward our side lol

Later, the chant was on a cd that I did not think was as terrible as many other people, mostly for the fact that it reminded me of the show

I lived there for years and i still got family there. It's gotten better but i wouldn't live there. It's a cool place to retire and a cool place to attend school but i can't deal with the cops, the heat, the economy, the gangs, the landscape, and the boredom.

Hahaha. So funny he said that! 'One of us' is one of his most ignored songs by many people, especially those who seem to know only his 80's material, which seems to just be about 59% of people. Lol

And rightly so. It's a middling cover of a middling song.

This is true, howerver; his overall sales have decline badly in past years. He may be a legend, but he still has bills to pay, llawsuits to seattle, and hos to support. Thus I am sure he cares VERY much about his tickets sales.

He's a trip though, and I have always enjoyed his live performances.
