No matter what the medium, or how convincing it may appear, you can be sure that Prince is not on the Internet. Not on Facebook, not on Twitter, not on MySpace, not on anything.
But there are some really good imitators out there!

I KNOW! That guy who was imitating Prince on Twitter makes it seem so believable! He must have a lot of time on his hands From the vineyards of Lavaux back 2 the heart of Minnesota. U R was, and will 4ever B The Purple Yoda....

He didn't mean anything with 'the internet is dead', i.e. there is no philosophy behind it.
He just said it after his own website debacle (and probably all the YouTube videos-nonsense). Fans would blame him for Lotusflower but with his quote he implied that he 'was above all that'. He had moved on because 'internet is dead', and so should all his criticasters.
It's just his cheap way of avoiding all discussion. [Edited 11/15/11 5:22am] Stop the Prince Apologists ™

If he did have a Twitter account he'd most probably be using a pseudonym which would give no actual indication that it had anything to do with him, therefore you'd never be able to find him.

I know his real twitter account name but I can't tell you what it is.
Last night he tweeted this......"the f*cking re-spawning on MW3 sucks...why in f*ck did I buy this sh*t...I'm going back to Battlefield c*nts"
Since he proclaimed the tinternet dead he pretty much hates all online gaming. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I disagree. As a producer myself, who is actively trying to sell music, I get where he is coming from. In the early days of the internet, it was hailed as the saviour of music - that people would be able to reach fans more easily, take control of their own affairs etc etc
Whilst that is true, there is the other side of the coin - the illegal file-sharing and downloading that is killing music sales. It has actually made it harder for musicians (particularly small independent musicians) to make money out of selling music.
So, in terms of selling music, the internet is dead. And iTunes and the like don't help either. Go and check out Pete Townsend's (The Who) recent speech about iTunes "The Digital Vampire" and how they are helping kill the industry (along with file-sharing etc).
It is also why Prince is active in coming up with very different distribution methods (giving aways cds with concert tickets/newspapers etc). He has to, because the internet is not the way to go.
You may see it as just a crass attempt at avoiding discussion, I see it as a him promoting discussion. He knew that would raise eyebrows and chatter and it surely did, its just some didn't get it - but then, perhaps only musicians (or those that are fending for themselves at least) would get it? ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I hope Prince doesn't have a twitter account and will never have a twitter account. It's just such a waste of time. There are thousands of better things to do with one's time then talk about mindless drivel on twitter.

Mindflux, you and PT make valid points, but I think that opens the door for a much-needed discussion with iTunes.
With Prince, there is no discussion possible, and again, I don't think there's any meaning behind his remark. He has always been like a kid - if a game doesn't interest him anymore or he is losing, then he just walks away - looking for a new game to play. And the old one is 'dead'. That he might not be able to distill the chemtrail conspiracies and the JW Bible into a coherent narrative, is understandable. But this subject he should know inside and out; he should be able to explain it in very clear terms. But he doesn't. Stop the Prince Apologists ™

Which only happened because the music industry couldn't be arsed to supply those things themselves. And when they did, they did their utmost best to screw with their customers.
The music industry never took care of its customers -- and there never were that many to begin with. That's the truth: if you look at the money involved in the music industry, then it's tiny. Everytime I see numbers about how many CDs/DVDs the average Joe buys per month/year, I realize I'm an exception.
That never made money. Making money from selling recorded music is a fluke, it's the exception, not the rule. Mick Jagger said this years ago: there was a 25 year window in which a bunch of people (and not necessarily the musicians) earned a ton of money from selling records, but prior to that this wasn't the case, and in the future it probably won't be either.
The music industry can only blame itself, BTW. Rarely have I seen a more clueless bunch of people. 15+ years ago I worked for a newspaper, and one day I found myself interviewing a female singer who'd just released an album that had been recorded in a bunch of well-known studios, produced by a well-known producer, and featuring a bunch of well-known musicians. Was this a good album? Hell no. Rubbish from start to finish. Who was she? Someone who'd been the vocalist on the one hit some one-hit-wonder had scored a year ago, and it hadn't even been that huge a hit. Yet here she was sitting in front of me, as part of a European promo tour, talking about an album that must have cost a ton to make. This was in the mid-1990s, when record companies already were complaining about dwindeling sales. And it just struck me that they'd invested a shitload of money into a doomed project. Did they really expect this to earn them any money back?
Gimmicks. Nothing he's come up with is original or revolutionary or anything resembling a business model. His MO is still the same as in his major label years: get huge advance, deliver product. Optional: bitch about not having a hit.
Bullcrap. It's typically Prince: stomping his tiny feet and threatening to take his toys and go home. © Bart Van Hemelen

Hmmm - some of what you say has some truth to it, but I don't agree with much of what you say.
Yes, the music industry was slow to react to consumer demands over easy access to digital music. Yes, they made major errors in public relations in pursuit of illegal-file sharing. But, what do you mean by "they never took care of their customers" and that "there weren't that many". Is there supposed to be some sort of "after-care" that record labels are supposed to provide? If you like an artist and buy a cd, that should provide a lifetime's enjoyment of that music - what else is the label supposed to do? Pop round and check you still like it? Send you free t-shirts for that one purchase? And saying there weren't that many consumers is laughable. Some albums shift millions of units - that's not negligble by any stretch. Furthermore, the global industry is worth over $100billion - that's not small change either. And I doubt you, or I, are an exception. I personally own over 1000 cds that I have purchased - that's a fairly decent life-time value as a consumer.
You say artists "never made money" and that's simply not true. It is true that you are an exception becoming a multi-millionaire in the industry, but not everyone is pursuing that sort of fortune. Frankly, I'm happy earning a modest living that pays the bills and gives me modest disposable income. Jagger was referring to those that make multiple millions as being a rarity and only in that particular "golden age" (somewhat crass coming from someone who was part of that in the first place!). Its very close to the same thing that all the "Occupy" protests are about at the moment - its the small percentage controlling all the wealth, instead of it being evenly distributed. Its not just the music industry where that has happened, its across all industries.
Ok, you've come across some dickheads in the music business - I hate to break it to you, its the same in any industry. In fact, there was a very interesting article I read recently that went on to show that all these Wall Street high flyers and other top industry execs found their success mostly by pure chance and right place right time. They weren't particularly brilliant, or had wildly better ideas and practices than anyone else - a lot of it was down to luck, privelege (being from a wealthy background often helped) and traits that were not unlike the same results you'd get were you to test a psychopath! In fact, here's the link to the article: http://www.guardian.co.uk...NETTXT9038
Furthermore, consumers have to shoulder some of the responsibility. In a survey in the UK in 2008, 80% of respondents said that they wanted a legal P2P service for music. Unfortunately, only 50% of the respondents felt the music's creators should be compensated!! How is that ever going to work? Why do they think this? Well, that wasn't answered, but I think its because since Napster and file-sharing became so prevalant, consumers seem to think that somehow music should be free, which is a nonsense. Why should an artist not be compensated for the work that should enrich your life and provide years of enjoyment. What next? Should cars be free? Houses? Hey - how about you all do your jobs for nothing, just as these people are expecting music producers to do?
And your responses to Prince's efforts to circumvent these problems and his responses in interviews, well, they're just "typically Bart" - you rarely have a positive thing to say about him. You constantly imply he is a buffoon, despite having a successful career that spans nearly 4 decades. We all know why you feel that way but, seriously, isn't it time you got over that? Just to back this up, here's a quote from none other than Jimmy Jam, who I think has far better insight and credence than you;
"And not only has he done a lot musically throughout his career, he also challenged the way that records are released. He was one of the first artists to embrace putting his music out on the internet; he stood up to Warner Bros. because he wanted to release more records than Warner Bros. wanted at that time. The fact that he even wanted to try something different and dared to do it was great. When he had a hit with "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and then the next album he comes out in a bikini and leg warmers and a trench coat doing New Wave and rock 'n' roll was crazy, but he was one of the ones that set that tone at the time."
For all your bitching about the industry and you're degrading of the people involved, I've never once see you present a viable solution - perhaps you should enlighten us?
