When did Prince move his best on stage?

i was watching a performance from 98 "New Power Soul" in London last night and was amazed at some of the moves Prince was making. His spins, splits, jumps from the piano etc.. made me think that maybe he was never as smooth, fluid on stage as he was during that period-JamoftheYear/NPS. something about those ramps on both sides that he ran up and down and got close to the audience with were special.
what period do you think he was at his best on stage?

some of the stuff he did when the gameboyz were onstage was pretty mental. far more energetic than the NPS tour. i was at that show in london 98 and onstage with prince for the first time

i think he stopped doing the splits after the 2000 Hit&Run tour but cant remember if he even did them on that tour. i know he did on the Rave 2000 New Years gig.

choreography was better yes but i would argue he worked the stage better alone than with other dancers.

nude tour was his most fluid choreography, sign o the times his most well rounded, purple rain his most savage and direct. i love his dancing during dmsr on the 1999 tour, loose and unrehearsed, it looks like he's dancing in a nightclub.

'86 , '87 , '88 - my favourites. I was also at the nude & d&p shows (7/8 of each) & I thought his dancing was amazing & original. It's ONE of the things I most love/admire about him & he's never given enuf props 4 it!!! When I went 2 the o2/indigo shows I really missed the dancing,i felt sad those days are a thing of the past.. bawl

Well, i also think that he had the best moves during the jam of the year-new power soul days...Very james brown oriented, very smooth! Then i would say the parade tour had some really funky moves..following by Sott!

(Mj and Prince really inspired my own dance moves....)

His hip hop moves during the 91-92 tours were "ok" for that time, but nothing special!

Um, yeah he has! He's BEEN stopped!! Maybe it's the best he can do right NOW, but it's certainly not the best he's ever done!!!!

The '86-'88 period was when his choreography and onstage showmanship was at its ultimate zenith. He can NEVER surpass these live shows as far as energy and power. Never! Part of the downside of aging, unfortunately.

the pre 1986 years I love the best, ^^^ savage & direct, loose & unrehearsed, says it all

It was in the Parade shows that he had the dancers and started doing more choreographed stuff, some was cool. Like during Christopher Tracey's Parade and the 3 dancers would toss the tamborines up in the air, but I could have done with out them

the stuff with Cat still came off as raw, I love the SOTT stuff more than the Lovesexy sows

I still prefere the savage loose & unrehearsed

in my opinion he found his feet from 87 - 92/95

Prior to this he was making all teh right noises but seemed to be just going through the motions gradually honing it until 87. Sign O The Times brought chorography and theatrics that complimented the shows and the theatrics continued up until Diamonds and Pearls and probably decreased or certainly didnt improve through to The Gold Experience. After that everything kinda went down hill (im suprised you mentioned 98 because I saw him at Wembley and, except for running on in Chka opener, i dont remember much energy at all).

Now a days its a yawnfest in terms of theatrics - stood at a mic stand, playing a fender stratocaster or maybe a keyboard hitting sample loops for a brief medley...very 'un-Princely'.....its amazing when he sits at a piano or picks up a bass because its so rare (might aswell forget the drums all together).

Anyway thats my opinion

Exactamundo!! And I'm also surprised someone brought up a '98 show being high in energy! I've seen a few of those shows, and they were nothing high-energy! Not even close!

totally agree about that 98 wembley show. i took a mate who had never seen him live and i'd been bigging up his dancing and the theatrics. total letdown! i had to show him the sign o the times movie to prove i wasn't talking bullshit.

i knew that some would not agree with the 97-98 era. i would also say that he became a great dancer by 87 but it feels like Prince was just more comfortable and confident by the time Jam of the Year hit.
a good example of this is the "lets work/delirious" performance from Sinbad's talkshow in '98'

I've noticed too especially looking back on bootleg videos of Jam of the Year concerts, that he's lightening quick and very acrobatic on this tour, almost so smooth, that it looks like he's not even having to make an effort to do it.

I'd say he got that kind of lightening smooth precision on the Nude Tour and Graffiti Bridge era.

I'd say the dancing in the The Nude Tour and the Act I/II Tours. There was so much energy, and some of the moves were really dynamic. The Game Boyz could just throw him around. They did some cool stuff because of the height differences. lol

It's not that I'm disputing it...it's just he did one main show here in 98 and, to my memory, he just strolled around

I'd say Purple Rain tour. He was young, riding high and I saw him in person and could feel the energy from the crowd in response.
